  • The status of recently expanded exotic pangasiid catfish Pangasius hypophthalmus, Pangasiidae farming in rural Bangladesh has been studied for finding research needs, through knowing the culture methods, associated activities and problems, to make the farming sustainable. Data were collected using participatory rural appraisal (PRA) tools in nine villages in three upazilas (sub-district) of Mymensingh district. The farmers have not got any formal training and have developed their knowledge on farming the fish through practice over years and sharing of knowledge among fellow farmers. Linked industries, e.g. hatcheries, nurseries, feed mills, trading of feed and fish etc. have developed that created employment opportunities. Most of the farmers produce two crops a year. About 90% of the farmers were found to practice mono culture of pangasiid catfish at high stocking density. The feeding rates started from 10-15% of the body weight per day at fingerling stage that reduced to 4-6% with growth. The average yield was found to be 25 tonslha/year. The livelihood of the farmers has been improved through farming the fish. Women and children were rarely engaged in the activities. The identified major problems in farming the fish were water quality deterioration, high feed costs and declining consumer demand and market price.

  • Agricultural groundwater use accounts for 51.8% of total groundwater use, so accurate estimation of groundwater use is important for efficient groundwater management. The purpose of this study is to develop a method for estimating the groundwater use of agricultural (rice farming and dry-field farming) wells using regression tree model based on the measured data of 370 wells. Three input variables of the model were evaluated as being significant: well depth, pipe diameter, and pump capacity, and the importance of each variable was 75% for well depth, 17% for pipe diameter, and 8% for pumping capacity. The daily usage of agricultural (rice farming and dry-field farming) wells by the regression tree model was estimated to be very similar to the actual usage, compared to the previous estimation method proposed by the Ministry of Construction and Transportation. In the future, it is expected that the reliability of the usage statistics will be improved if additional observed data is secured and this classification method is modified.

  • The objectives of this study were to monitor organic farming upland compared with conventional upland field and to evaluate nutrient loads reduction of surface cover effect with long-term historical climate data. APEX(Agricultural Policy Environmental eXtender) model was validated with experimental data and used for assessing surface cover scenarios for 30-year simulation periods. The validated values of RMSE(Root Mean Square Error), RMAE(Root Mean Absolute Error), $R^2$ and E(Nash-Sutcliffe efficiency) for runoff were 1.17-1.37 mm/day, 0.28-0.45 mm/day, 0.88-0.90 and 0.82-0.94 in two treatments, respectively. Those for water quality (nitrogen) were 0.05-0.16 kg/ha, 0.52-0.75 kg/ha, 0.67-0.72 and 0.32-0.70 in two treatments, respectively, and therefore the validated model showed good agreement with the observed runoff and nitrogen load for the study period. When decreasing the surface cover rate of organic farming field to 75%, 50%, 25%, and 0% (conventional field), average annual runoff increased by 7%, 15%, 23% and 31%, respectively. Under same condition of decreasing the surface cover rate, average annual nitrogen loads increased by 1.4 times, 1.7 times, 2.0 times, and 2.3 times compared with organic farming field, respectively. This study showed that it is possible to present an appropriate surface cover ratio to maintain conventional production and minimize nonpoint sources pollution for organic farming system, although long-term monitoring is needed to determine its effects on environmental concerns, crop competition, and other uncertainty.

  • Farming activities are transforming from traditional skill-based agriculture into knowledge-based and technology-driven digital agriculture. The use of intelligent information and communication technology introduces the idea of smart farming that enables farmers to collect weather data, monitor crop growth remotely and detect crop diseases easily. The introduction of Plantix, a pest and disease management tool in the form of a mobile application has allowed farmers to identify pests and diseases of the crop using their mobile devices. Hence, this study collected the reviews of Plantix to explore the response of the users on the Google Play Store towards the application through Latent Dirichlet Allocation (LDA) topic modeling. Results indicate four latent topics in the reviews: two positive evaluations (compliments, appreciation) and two suggestions (plant options, recommendations). We found the users suggested the application to additional plant options and additional features that might help the farmers with their difficulties. In addition, the application is expected to benefit the farmer more by having an early alert of diseases to farmers and providing various substitutes and a list of components for the remedial measures.

  • In this study, the current conditions of the farming and fishing village housing improvement projects that were promoted for the last five years were examined, the results of the survey conducted among the promoters of the farming and fishing village housing improvement projects with regard to their level of satisfaction were analyzed, and the outcomes of the housing improvement projects and the improvement needs were derived for utilization as basic data for preparing an improvement plan for "the farming and fishing village housing improvement projects". Below are the results of this study and the proposals based on such. In view of the reality that the recipients of the farming and fishing village housing improvement projects are limited to the rural residents who are able to repay their loans, ways of actualizing the current loan limit of 60 million won should be prepared, taking into account the actual construction cost. Moreover, as the rural residents do not live on monthly salaries, the repayment periods of their loans should be adjusted to make them payable on a quarterly or a semi-annual basis, reflecting the reality of the farming villages, where loan repayment is based on the residents' yearly income. Further, policies guaranteeing the residential rights of those belonging to the low-income bracket who are unable to repay their loans must be established at the soonest possible time. In view of the realities in the farming villages, where there are 640,000 houses that are over 31 years old, the supply of 10,000 houses as part of the housing improvement projects is grossly inadequate. Of course, it cannot be said that all the residents who are living in worn-out houses have the necessary conditions for receiving support from the housing improvement fund. Therefore, policies supporting the speedy improvement of worn-out houses and guaranteeing the residential rights of those belonging to the low-income bracket are urgently needed.

  • This study intends to review the sustainable agriculture and rural development concepts and practices and to present their directions toward better rural planning. Review of related literature including use of available documents and field visits both in Korea and overseas countries are two main methods of data collection with no quantitative analysis. Before sustainable (rural) development was fashionably used in the 1990s in the world, sustainable agriculture and other similar terminologies such as organic farming, alternative agriculture, low-input sustainable agriculture, natural farming, and environment-friendly farming are considered important in the academics as well as In action. The significant relationship between farmers' engagement in sustainable farming and their participation in voluntary social organizations is evidenced, so that it might be said that sustainable agriculture be the basis of sustainable rural development. Whether in sustainable agriculture or in sustainable rural development, the sustainable rural economy is considered more important toward better rural planning both in Korea and in the world.
