The data response speed is a critical issue of cloud services because it directly related to the user experience. As such, the in-memory database is widely adopted in many cloud-based applications for achieving fast data response. However, the current implementation of the in-memory database is mostly based on the linked list-based hash table which cannot guarantee the constant data response time. Thus, cuckoo hashing was introduced as an alternative solution, however, there is a disadvantage that only half of the allocated memory can be used for storing data. Subsequently, bucketized cuckoo hashing (BCH) improved the performance of cuckoo hashing in terms of memory efficiency but still cannot overcome the limitation that the insert overhead. In this paper, we propose a data management solution called Wall Cuckoo which aims to improve not only the insert performance but also lookup performance of BCH. The key idea of Wall Cuckoo is that separates the data among a bucket according to the different hash function be used. By doing so, the searching range among the bucket is narrowed down, thereby the amount of slot accesses required for the data lookup can be reduced. At the same time, the insert performance will be improved because the insert is following up the operation of the lookup. According to analysis, the expected value of slot access required for our Wall Cuckoo is less than that of BCH. We conducted experiments to show that Wall Cuckoo outperforms the BCH and Sorting Cuckoo in terms of the amount of slot access in lookup and insert operations and in different load factor (i.e., 10%-95%).
The broadcast environment is asymmetric communication aspect that is typically much greater communication capacity available from server to clients than in the opposite direction. In addition, most of mobile computing systems only allow the generation of read-only transactions from mobile clients for retrieving different types of information such as stock data, traffic information and news updates. Since previous concurrency control protocols, however, do not consider such a particular characteristics, the performance degradation occurs when those schemes are applied to the broadcast environment having quite a high data contention. In this paper, we propose OCC/2VTS (Optimistic Concurrency Control based on 2-Version and TimeStamp) that is most appropriate for broadcast environment. OCC/2VTS lets each client process and commit query transactions for itself by using two version data in cache. If the values of appropriate data items are not changed twice by invalidation report after a query transaction starts, the query transaction is committed safely independent of commitment of update transactions. OCC/2VTS decreases the number of informing server for the purpose of commitment. Due to broadcasting the validation reports including updated recent values, it reduces the opportunity of requesting a recent data values of server as well. As a result, OCC/2VTS makes full use of the asymmetric bandwidth. It also improves transaction throughput by increasing the query transaction commit ratio as much as possible.

The Internet of Things (IoT) is an environment in which various devices provide services to users through communications. Because of the nature of the IoT, data are stored and distributed in heterogeneous information systems. In this situation, IoT end applications should be able to access data without having information on where the data are or what the type of storage is. This mechanism is called Service Discovery (SD). However, some problems arise, since the current SD architectures search for data in physical devices. First, turnaround time increases from searching for services based on physical location. Second, there is a need for a data structure to manage devices and services separately. These increase the administrator's service configuration complexity. As a result, the device-oriented SD structure is not suitable to the IoT. Therefore, we propose an SD structure called Name-based Service-centric Service Discovery (NSSD). NSSD provides name-based centralized SD and uses the IoT edge gateway as a cache server to speed up service discovery. Simulation results show that NSSD provides about twice the improvement in average turnaround time, compared to existing domain name system and distributed hash table SD architectures.
Recently heterogeneous storage system such as hybrid hard disk drive (H-HDD) combining flash memory and magnetic disk is launched, according as the read performance of NAND flash memory is enhanced as similar to that of hard disk drive (HDD) and the power consumption of NAND flash memory is reduced less than that of HDD. However, the read and write operations of NAND flash memory are slower than those of rotational disk. Besides, serious overheads are incurred on CPU and main memory in the case that intensive write requests to flash memory are repeatedly occurred. In this paper, we propose the Least Frequently Used-Hot scheme that replaces the data blocks whose reference frequency of read operation is low and update frequency of write operation is high, and the data flushing scheme that rearranges the data blocks into the multi-zone of the rotation disk. Experimental results show that the execution time of the proposed method is 38% faster than those of conventional LRU and LFU block replacement schemes in I/O performance aspect and the proposed method increases the life span of Non-Volatile Cache 40% higher than those of conventional LRU, LFU, FIFO block replacement schemes.

IoT(Internet of Things) is a concept of connected internet pursuing direct access to devices or sensors in fused environment of personal, industrial and public area. In IoT environment, it is possible to access realtime data, and the data format and topology of devices are diverse. Also, there are bidirectional communications between users and devices to control actuators in IoT. In this point, IoT is different from the conventional internet in which data are produced by human desktops and gathered in server systems by way of one-sided simple internet communications. For the cloud or portal service of IoT, there should be a file management framework supporting systematic naming service and unified data access interface encompassing the variety of IoT things. This paper implements a DB-based virtual file system maintaining attributes of IoT things in a UNIX-styled file system view. Users who logged in the virtual shell are able to explore IoT things by navigating the virtual file system, and able to access IoT things directly via UNIX-styled file I O APIs. The implemented virtual file system is lightweight and flexible because it maintains only directory structure and descriptors for the distributed IoT things. The result of a test for the virtual shell primitives such as mkdir() or chdir() shows the smooth functionality of the virtual file system, Also, the exploring performance of the file system is better than that of Window file system in case of adopting a simple directory cache mechanism.

Recently, as GPU performance has improved in HPC and artificial intelligence, its use is becoming more common, but GPU programming is still a big obstacle in terms of productivity. In particular, due to the difficulty of managing host memory and GPU memory separately, research is being actively conducted in terms of convenience and performance, and various CPU-GPU memory transfer programming methods are suggested. Meanwhile, recently many SoC (System on a Chip) products such as Apple M1 and NVIDIA Tegra that bundle CPU, GPU, and integrated memory into one large silicon package are emerging. In this study, data between CPU and GPU devices are used in such an integrated memory device and performance-related research is conducted during transmission. It shows different characteristics from the existing environment in which the host memory and GPU memory in the CPU are separated. Here, we want to compare performance by CPU-GPU data transmission method in NVIDIA SoC chips, which are integrated memory devices, and NVIDIA SMX-based V100 GPU devices. For the experimental workload for performance comparison, a two-dimensional matrix transposition example frequently used in HPC applications was used. We analyzed the following performance factors: the difference in GPU kernel performance according to the CPU-GPU memory transfer method for each GPU device, the transfer performance difference between page-locked memory and pageable memory, overall performance comparison, and performance comparison by workload size. Through this experiment, it was confirmed that the NVIDIA Xavier can maximize the benefits of integrated memory in the SoC chip by supporting I/O cache consistency.
A shared disk (SD) cluster couples multiple nodes for high performance transaction processing, and all the coupled nodes share a common database at the disk level. In the SD cluster, a transaction routing corresponds to select a node for an incoming transaction to be executed. An affinity-based routing can increase local buffer hit ratio of each node by clustering transactions referencing similar data to be executed on the same node. However, the affinity-based routing is very much non-adaptive to the changes in the system load, and thus a specific node will be overloaded if transactions in some class are congested. In this paper, we propose a dynamic transaction routing scheme that can achieve an optimal balance between affinity-based routing and dynamic load balancing of all the nodes in the SD cluster. The proposed scheme is novel in the sense that it can improve the system performance by increasing the local buffer hit ratio and reducing the buffer invalidation overhead.
Application response time is critical to end-user response time in Android smartphones. Due to the plentiful resources of recent smartphones, storage I/O response time becomes a major key factor in application response time. However, existing storage I/O trace tools for Android and Linux give limited information only for a specific I/O layer which makes it difficult to combine I/O information from different I/O layers, because not helpful for application developer and researchers. In this paper, we propose a novel storage I/O trace tool for Android, called AIOPro (Android I/O profiler). It traces storage I/O from application - Android platform - system call - virtual file system - native file system - page cache - block layer - SCSI layer and device driver. It then combines the storage I/O information from I/O layers by linking them with file information and physical address. Our evaluations of real smartphone usage scenarios and benchmarks show that AIOPro can track storage I/O information from all I/O layers without any data loss under 0.1% system overheads.
With the advent of big data and social networks, large-scale graph processing becomes popular research topic. Recently, an optimization technique called Gorder has been proposed to improve the performance of in-memory graph processing. This technique improves performance by optimizing the graph layout on memory to have better cache locality. However, since it is designed for in-memory graph processing systems, the technique is not suitable for disk-based graph engines; also the cost for applying the technique is significantly high. To solve the problem, we propose a new graph ordering called I/O Order. I/O Order considers the characteristics of I/O accesses for SSDs and HDDs to improve the performance of disk-based graph engine. In addition, the algorithmic complexity of I/O Order is simple compared to Gorder, hence it is cheaper to apply I/O Ordering. I/O order reduces the cost of pre-processing up to 9.6 times compared to that of Gorder's, still its performance is 2 times higher compared to the Random in low-locality graph algorithms.

The appearance of wirelsss internet service made accessing easier than existing mobile devices. Due to the properity of mobile devices, we can easily obtain his/her profile information compared to a wired internet service. It enables to provide a personalized service through mobile devices. In this paper, we propose a recommendation service based on collaborative filtering method and a content push service. Using users' profile information, we recommand a target user's favoriate content. The recommanded contents are stored in mobile device through the push service. When we connect a wireless internet service, our mobile push service starts to cache from user's favorite contents. Especially, when we select a large mobile content, our system can reduce a download time by using our recommandation service. Also, in case of a connectionless, we can use a cached data from pushed content in our mobile device.
