  • One of the major ocular complications of diabetes mellitus(DM) is retinopathy, which is characterized by increased neovascularization and neural degeneration in the retina. In the present study, we investigated the effects of treadmill exercise on retinopathy in the rats with DM. Thirty-two male Sprague-Dawley rats were divided into four groups(n = 8 in each group): control group, exercise group, DM-induction group, and DM-induction and exercise group. DM was induced by intraperitoneal injection of streptozotocin. The rats in the exercise groups were made to run on the treadmill for 30 min five times per a week, during 12 weeks. The expressions of phosphoinositide 3-kinase(PI3K), phospho-protein kinase B(pAkt), hypoxia inducible factor-1α(HIF-1α), and vascular endothelial growth factor(VEGF) in the retina were determined using western blot analysis and immunohistochemistry. In the present results, the expressions of PI3K, pAkt, HIF-1α, and VEGF in the retina of the diabetic rats were increased. Treadmill exercise suppressed HIF-1α and VEGF expressions through inhibition of PI3K/pAkt pathway in the diabetic rats. These results suggest that treadmill exercise may ameliorate the progression of diabetes-induced retinopathy by inhibiting neovascularization in the retina.

  • The study was aimed at investigating the relationship between biomechanical properties of cervical muscles and smartphone addiction score in fifty healthy males using smartphone more than 60 minutes each day. The usage of smartphone was evaluated by smartphone addiction survey developed from Korean International Society Agency. Biomechanical properties of three major cervical muscles; splenius capitis, sternocleidomastoid and upper trapezius, were measured by Myoton, and conducted five parameters; frequency, decrement, stiffness, creep, and relaxation time. As results, all parameters had less than 2% of coefficient of variation(CV) between measurement intervals. Also, intra-class correlation coefficient(ICC) indicated a high reliability(ICC>.9, p<.01). Moreover, the smartphone addiction score was significantly different in frequency(r=.353, p<.05) and stiffness(r=.346, p<.05) on upper trapezius; in addition, in decrement(r=-.284, p<.05) and creep(r=.288, p<.05) on sternocleidomastoid. Especially, splenius capitis was closely related with the overuse of smartphone(frequency, r=-.368, p<.01; decrement, r=-.405, p<.01; stiffness, r=-.424, p<.01). In conclusion, this study implied that the overuse of smartphone is significantly related with the damage of cervical muscles, cervical pain, and headache; furthermore, Myoton can be used as an effective device to assess mechanical properties of cervical muscles.

  • The purpose of this study is to encourage continuous participation in sports and to provide basic data for the promotion of participation in leisure sports. To achieve the purpose, this study conducted factor scaling analysis on participation motives for leisure sports and subdivided them to analyze psychological reactions of participants. As for study methods, this study collected master and doctor's degree theses and academic journals on motives for sports participation that were conducted from 1997 to 2012 from Korean major search engines. On the search engines, a keyword 'motive' was searched first and then studies on participation motive for leisure sports were collected. Key words that appeared when searching 'motive' were combined with other key words and word spacing between them were checked before conducting a literature analysis. The study results showed that participation motives for leisure sports were divided into a participation motive, an internal motive, an external motive, a leisure motive and other motives. It was identified that there were 23 factors for the participation motive, 17 factors each for the internal motive and the external motive, 8 factors for the leisure motive and 57 factors for other motives. It was found out that 76 factors were used to study a participation motive for leisure sports, excluding the factors that have similar or overlapping meaning based on each factor.

  • The purpose of this study was to compare muscular activities according to the mastery of Taekwondo kicking motions with the subjects of 8 demonstration team members and 8 undergraduates in Taekwondo major at University. The muscles mainly used for Taekwondo's front kick, tornado kick, or turning hook kick are total 8 trunk muscles and 8 lower limb muscles of the kicking foot as well as the supporting foot. Analyzing the muscular activities of those areas comparatively, the study has reached the following results. At the front kick, non-experts showed higher lower abdominal muscle, biceps thigh muscle activity of the kicking foot and lateral gastrocnemius muscle activity of the supporting foot but lower 2 spinals muscular activity than experts. At the tornado kick (or turning kick), in the turning motion, experts indicated higher activity in biceps muscle of thigh and spinalis than non-experts whereas in the kicking motion, they didn't show the difference between groups except biceps thigh muscle activity. At the turning hook kick, non-experts indicated higher lateral gastrocnemius muscle activity of the kicking foot and quadricpes femoris muscle activity of supporting foot muscular activity than experts. In summary, experts tend to use their trunk in the turning motion for rapid turning and show rather low muscular activity of their kicking foot. However, non-experts indicate high muscular activity in their kicking foot and supporting foot, which means to maintain balance in the kicking motion, they tend to make use of their lower limb more than trunk muscle, and it leads to an inefficient motion.

  • This study is to examine the current situation of Korean sports culture and seek its pointing spot and alternatives to its advancement. First, out of the current situation of Korean sports culture, that of school physical education, even though it is the most significant basis for sports culture, is riddled with so many contradictions that the pace of its change is very slow. Only when the elite sport is normally operated and well coordinated, can it have the value of existence as a stable field. The mass sports have been determined to have insufficient self-reliance of sport facilities, sport programs and instructor management since the national policy for physical education has been focused on the elite sports. Second, internalization of "Winning First Policy" as a pointing spot of sports culture has been found to be an production of the value system with not only a very passive tendency caused by political changes. Accordingly, the concept of sports-culturism has been introduced as a new pointing spot of sports culture and then it has been emphasized that the sports-culturism is the awareness of sports advancement. Third, in terms of finding any alternatives to sports culture, enacting a school physical education promotion law has a very significant meaning as its advancement method. Next, the immorality of and match-fixing by sport organizations and the umpire's bad call have been mentioned as major problems to the elite sport, and also the alternative to each field has been set. Last, it has been assented with emphasis that Law of Sports for All should be enacted for the public sports to have any significance of the times.

  • The purpose of this study was to understand barriers and problems associated with physical activity of older adults in a small town and to provide improvement plans based on socio-ecological model. This study employed three independent phases including survey, accelerometer study, and photovoice. Three phases were analyzed based on nesting design among diverse mixed method designs. Among 134 older participants, 73 older individuals reported that their physical activity per week was less than 150min in the first phase. Among the 73 older individuals, 40 older individuals participated in the second phase. In the second phase, 32 older individuals does not meet at least 150min of moderate-to-vigorous physical activity(MVPA) suggested by DHHS. Finally, 6 older adults participated in the third phase. Five major themes emerged including 1) lack of proper information and service regarding physical activity, 2)lack of support from people close to them, 3)some limits due to chronic disease, 4)lack of appropriate facility, and 5)lack of opportunity due to existing inactive lifestyle. Based on these five themes, this study attempted to provide the improvement plans with socio-ecological model.

  • The roots of modern popular music have evolved from blues and jazz music. But now, due to various multimedia developments and the expansion of the online industry, these traditional music is gradually being shunned by the public. When measuring a nation's cultural scale, it does not value only a few genres of popular music. In many advanced countries, music, which has basic artistic value, is trying to support and grow more base expansion in government and businesses, and to meet the needs of consumers. At this time, local jazz and jazz clubs are gradually losing ground, out of dance, rock and ballad music. Everyone should recognize that it is not just a genre of music that is alienated from the trend of the times, but an important part of cultural art that we should develop and nurture systematically. And it should be handled by more media and recognized by the public. Although it is a small market, this paper analyzes the development of jazz music in Korea and various factors that jazz clubs can establish as part of the music industry through analysis of Korean jazz clubs. The artistry and popularity of jazz music, the development of music education programs, the revitalization of government-led performances and the operation of concert halls differentiated from those of broadcasting media will eventually lead to the development of jazz clubs due to the rise of many jazz music lovers. It is also hoped that through the direction of development, we will be able to succeed as a major part of pop culture.

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate the relations between the segments of the body, the three dimensional anatomical angle and the angular velocity of the air born phase and understand the control mechanism of the high-bar movement, the somersault, the double somersault, the double somersault with full twist. For this study seven well trained university gymnastic volunteered, Zatsiorky and Seluyanov(1983, 1985)'s sixteen segment system anatomical model was used for this study. For the movement analysis three dimensional cinematographical method(Arial Performance Analysis System : APAS) was used and for the calculation of the kinematic variables a self developed program was used with the LabVIEW 5.1 graphical profromming(Johnson, 1999) program. By using Eular's equations the three dimensional anatomical Cardan angles of the joint and angular velocity were defined. As a result of this study 1. As the rotation of the body increased in the air born phase the projection angle of the CM of the total increased, this resulted the increased of the max hight of the CM. 2. In three dimensional angular velocity the Z axis(vertical direction) projection angular velocity increased as the rotation of the body increased in the airborn phase, but the Y axis and the X axis projection angular velocity did not show significant differences. 3. As the rotation of the body increased in the air born phase the angular movement of the shoulder and the hip showed significant change. These movement act as the starter in the preparation phase. 4. The somersault angle, the twist angle, the tilt angle of the upper body related to the global reference frame in the releas phase the average somersault angle of the three types of high-bar movement was $57.7^{\circ}$, $38.8^{\circ}$, $39.7^{\circ}$, the average tilt angle was $-1.5^{\circ}$, $-5.4^{\circ}$, $-8.4^{\circ}$, the average twist angle was $13.4^{\circ}$, $10.6^{\circ}$, $23.3^{\circ}$. This result showed that the somersault with full twist had the largest movement.
