  • This study was carried out to provide basic data for active control of the anticipated damage through investigation and analysis of geographical and spatial occurrence distribution of oak wilt disease area. The damage of oak wilt disease was analyzed by investigating all the damage trees caused by oak wilt disease from 2011 to 2015 in three areas of Gwangtan-myeon, Paju-si, Gyeonggi -do. As a result, the closer to the ridge the more damage of the oak wilt was generated. Therefore, it is necessary to select the central management area from 0 to 40 m based on the ridge line for more effective control, and to intensively control the area. Also, it is difficult to predict the occurrence of damage by the slope because the damage situation represent differently by the region. By the diameter class, it was analyzed that the number of damaged trees was the largest in the average diameter class with the most number of the trees in each region.

  • The effect of particle property on FOD(foreign object damage) and strength degradation in structural ceramics especially, silicon carbide was investigated by accelerating a spherical particle having different material and different size. The damage induced showed significant differences in their patterns with increase of impact velocity. Also percussion cone was formed at the back part of specimen when particle size became large and its impact velocity exceeded a critical value. The extent of ring cracks was linearly related to particle size, however the impact of steel particle produced larger ring cracks than that of SiC particle. Increasing impact velocity the residual strength showed different degradation behaviors according to particle and its size. In the region the impact site represents nearly elastic deformation behavior, the residual strength was dependent upon the depth of cone crack regardless of particle size. However in elastic- plastic deformation region, the radial cracks led to rapid drop in residual strength.

  • In the development process of a fuel-rich gas generator using kerosene and LOx for a 30 tonf class liquid rocket engine, a heat damage occurred at the LOx post of swirl coaxial injectors used in the gas generator and the problem has been examined. To prevent the heat damage, injectors are redesigned to have an increased recess while maintaining internal mixing, which minimizes recirculation region to prevent anchoring of the flame in the recirculation region. The combustion test results of the sub-scale gas generator showed that this scheme can prevent heat damage of the LOx post in the swirl coaxial injectors of the fuel-rich gas generator.

  • This article shows that the susceptibility of the device pattern to thermal stress-induced damage has a strong dependence on its proximity to the device comer in semiconductor devices utilizing lead-on-chip (LOC) die attach technique. The result, as explained based on numerical calculation and experiment, indicateds that the stress-driven damage potential of the passivation layer is the highest at the device comer. Thus, the bonding pads, which are very susceptible to passivation damage, should be designed to be located along the central region rather than the peripheral region of the device.

  • This study aims to predict inundation and flood-stricken areas more accurately by simulating flood damage caused by reversible flow of rain water in the upper water system through precise 3D terrain model and backwater output. For the upstream of the South Han-River, precise 3D terrain model was established by using aerial LiDAR data and backwater by area was output by applying the storm events of 2002 including the history of flood damage. The 3D flood simulation was also performed by using GIS Tool and for occurrence of related rainfall events, inundation events of the upriver region of water system was analyzed. In addition, the results of flood simulation using backwater were verified by making the inundation damage map for the relevant area and comparing it with flood simulation's results. When comparing with the results of the flood simulation applying uniformly the gauging station's water surface elevation used for the existing flood simulation, it is found that the results of the flood simulation using backwater are close to the actual inundation damage status. Accordingly, the causes of flood occurred in downstream of water system and upstream that has different topographic characteristics could be investigated and applying the simulation with backwater is proved more proper in order to procure accuracy of the flood simulation for the upriver region.

  • BACKGROUND: It is known that impacts of climate change on damage occurrence by insect pests and diseases are increasing. The negative effects of climate change on production will threaten our food security. It is needed that on the basis of analysis of the impacts, proper strategies in response to climate change are developed. METHODS AND RESULTS: The objective of this paper is to estimate impacts of climate change on rice damage occurrence by insect pests and diseases, using the panal model which analyzes both cross-section data and time series data. The result of an analysis on impacts of climate change on rice damage occurrence by pest insect and disease showed that the damage occurrence by Rice leaf roller and Rice water weevil increased if temperature increased, and damage occurrence by Stripe, Sheath blight, and Leaf Blast increased if precipitation(or amount of sunshine) increased(or decreased). CONCLUSION: Adaptation strategies, supplying weather forecasting information by region, developing systematical strategies for prevention of damage occurrence by pest insect and disease, analyzing the factors of damage occurrence by unexpected pest insect and disease, enforcing international cooperation for prevention of damage occurrence are needed to minimize the impacts of damage occurrence on rice production.

  • In this paper, seismic performance evaluation was carried out for eight circular reinforced concrete columns designed seismically by KRTA[1]and KCI[8]. Primary design parameters for such columns included many longitudinal reinforcements, yield strength of reinforcements, the vertical spacing of spirals, aspect ratio, and axial force ratio. The test results showed that all the columns exhibited stable hysteretic and inelastic responses. Based on the test results, drift ratios corresponding to each damage state, such as initial yielding, initial cover spalling, initial core concrete crushing, buckling, and fracture of longitudinal reinforcement and final spalled region, were evaluated. Then, those ratios were compared with widely accepted damage limit states. The comparison revealed that the existing damage states were considerably conservative. This implies that additional research is required for the damage limit states of such columns designed seismically by current Korean design codes.

  • Over the past couple decades, externally bonded fiber reinforced polymer (FRP) composites have emerged as a repair and strengthening material for many concrete infrastructure applications. This paper presents an analytical investigation of the use of carbon FRP (CFRP) for a specific problem that occurs in concrete bridge girders wherein the girder ends are damaged by excessive exposure to deicing salts and numerous freezing/thawing cycles. A 3D finite element (FE) model of a full scale prestressed concrete (PC) I-girder is used to investigate the effect of damage to the cover concrete and stirrups in the end region of the girder. Parametric studies are performed using externally bonded CFRP shear laminates to determine the most effective repair schemes for the damaged end region under a short shear span-to-depth ratio. Experimental results on shear pull off tests of CFRP laminates that have undergone accelerated aging are used to calibrate a bond stress-slip model for the interface between the FRP and concrete substrate and approximate the reduced bond stress-slip properties associated with exposure to the environment that causes this type of end region damage. The results of these analyses indicate that this particular application of this material can be effective in recovering the original strength of PC bridge girders with damaged end regions, even after environmental aging.

  • To study the seismic damage of masonry structures and understand the characteristics of the multi-intensity region, according to the Dujiang weir urbanization of China Wenchuan earthquake, the deterioration of 3991 masonry structures was summarized and statistically analysed. First, the seismic damage of multistory masonry structures in this area was investigated. The primary seismic damage of components was as follows: Damage of walls, openings, joints of longitudinal and transverse walls, windows (lower) walls, and tie columns. Many masonry structures with seismic designs were basically intact. Second, according to the main factors of construction, seismic intensity code levels survey, and influence on the seismic capacity, a vulnerability matrix calculation model was proposed to establish a vulnerability prediction matrix, and a comparative analysis was made based on the empirical seismic damage investigation matrix. The vulnerability prediction matrix was established using the proposed vulnerability matrix calculation model. The fitting relationship between the vulnerability prediction matrix and the actual seismic damage investigation matrix was compared and analysed. The relationship curves of the mean damage index for macrointensity and ground motion parameters were drawn through calculation and analysis, respectively. The numerical analysis was performed based on actual ground motion observation records, and fitting models of PGA, PGV, and MSDI were proposed.
