  • The paper deals with the damage assessment of the concrete beam using static displacements and the flexural stiffness reduction of the beam was evaluated. Simply supported concrete beams were loaded at the mid-span, and the applied load level ranged $20\%,\;40\%,\;80\%$ of the flexural strength of the beam. When the displacements from the tests were increased more than $10\%$ of the initial values, flexural cracks occured. Judging from the observed cracks, damaged area of the beams were assumed and the stiffness reduction using the smeared-cracking concept was estimated to minimize the error between the test results and analytical results. Four stages of the behavior of a RC beam, which are uncracked, initial cracking, stabilized cracking and post-yielding, can be considered to assess the damage of RC beams. Main parameters for the assessment were cracking area and the stiffness reduction ratio. In each stage, damaged elements and their stiffness reduction were estimated to minimized the error.

  • In this paper, a method for identifying the location and extent of a damage in a structure using residual forces was presented. Element stiffness matrix reduction parameters in a finite element model were used to describe the damaged structure mathematically. The element stiffness matrix reduction parameters were determined by minimizing a global error derived from dynamic residual vectors, which were obtained by introducing a simulated experimental data into the eigenvalue problem. Genetic algorithm was used to get the solution set of element stiffness reduction parameters. The proposed scheme was verified using Euler-Bernoulli beam. The results were presented in the form of tables and charts.

  • A damage in a structure changes its dynamic characteristics such as natural frequencies, damping ratios, and the mode shapes. In this paper the effort has been spent in obtaining the characteristics of the reduction ratio in natural frequencies and the damage detection is performed using the reduction ratios. Most of the emphasis has been on using the artificial neural network to determine the location and the extent of the damage as well as the existence of the damage. The data for learning and verifying neural network were obtained from the analytical analysis. The data have no errors. Considering the real measurements the data including errors which are difference this study between other studies also were used for neural network. The position and extent of the damage can be detected using the neural network trained by reduction ratios of natural frequencies.

  • Due to the importance of soil reinforcement using geotextiles in geotechnical engineering, study and investigation into long-term performance, design life and survivability of geotextiles, especially due to installation damage are necessary and will affect their economy. During installation, spreading and compaction of backfill materials, geotextiles may encounter severe stresses which can be higher than they will experience in-service. This paper aims to investigate the installation damage of geotextiles, in order to obtain a good approach to the estimation of the material's strength reduction factor. A series of full-scale tests were conducted to simulate the installation process. The study includes four deliberately poorly-graded backfill materials, two kinds of subgrades with different CBR values, three nonwoven needle-punched geotextiles of classes 1, 2 and 3 (according to AASHTO M288-08) and two different relative densities for the backfill materials. Also, to determine how well or how poorly the geotextiles tolerated the imposed construction stresses, grab tensile tests and visual inspections were carried out on geotextile specimens (before and after installation). Visual inspections of the geotextiles revealed sedimentation of fine-grained particles in all specimens and local stretching of geotextiles by larger soil particles which exerted some damage. A regression model is proposed to reliably predict the installation damage reduction factor. The results, obtained by grab tensile tests and via the proposed models, indicated that the strength reduction factor due to installation damage was reduced as the median grain size and relative density of the backfill decreases, stress transferred to the geotextiles' level decreases and as the as-received grab tensile strength of geotextile and the subgrades' CBR value increase.

  • The amount of rice yield reduction due to inundation should be estimated to analyse economic efficiency of the farmland drainage improvement projects because those projects are generally promoted to mitigate flood inundation damage to rice in Korea. Estimation of rice yield reduction will also provide information on the flood risk performance to farmers. This study presented the relationships between inundated durations and rice yield reduction rates for different rice growth stages from the observed data collected from 1966 to 2000 in Korea, and developed the rice yield reduction estimation model (RYREM). RYREM was applied to the test watershed for estimating the rice yield reduction rates and the amount of expected average annual rice yield reduction by the rainfalls with 48 hours duration, 10, 20, 50, 100, 200 years return periods.

  • This paper presents a novel structural damage detection method with a new damage index based on the statistical moments of dynamic responses of a structure under a random excitation. After a brief introduction to statistical moment theory, the principle of the new method is put forward in terms of a single-degree-of-freedom (SDOF) system. The sensitivity of statistical moment to structural damage is discussed for various types of structural responses and different orders of statistical moment. The formulae for statistical moment-based damage detection are derived. The effect of measurement noise on damage detection is ascertained. The new damage index and the proposed statistical moment-based damage detection method are then extended to multi-degree-of-freedom (MDOF) systems with resort to the leastsquares method. As numerical studies, the proposed method is applied to both single and multi-story shear buildings. Numerical results show that the fourth-order statistical moment of story drifts is a more sensitive indicator to structural stiffness reduction than the natural frequencies, the second order moment of story drift, and the fourth-order moments of velocity and acceleration responses of the shear building. The fourth-order statistical moment of story drifts can be used to accurately identify both location and severity of structural stiffness reduction of the shear building. Furthermore, a significant advantage of the proposed damage detection method lies in that it is insensitive to measurement noise.

  • The safety of on-going ships is one of important concerns in the view of environment and human life. The ship in bad condition is likely to be subjected to accidental loads such as collision. Once she has one or several minor collision damages in the form of circle or ellipse, her ultimate strength under compression or tension load will be reduced. Here, it is important to evaluate the reduction ratio of ultimate strength due to the damage from safety point of view. The problem of strength reduction of a plate with cutout such as opening hole has been treated by many researchers. As a result, a closed-form formula on the reduction of ultimate strength of a plate considering the effect of several forms of cutout was suggested. However, the structure of ships is composed of a plate and a stiffener so-called a stiffened plate, and it is likely to be damaged at a plate and stiffeners together in collision. This paper is to investigate the effect of minor collision damage on ultimate strength of a stiffened plate by using numerical analysis. For this study, the shape of minor collision damage of a stiffened plate was made by using contact algorithm. The deformed shape was used as an initial shape for ultimate stress analysis. Then, a series of nonlinear FE analysis was conducted to investigate the reduction effects of ultimate strength of the stiffened plate. The boundary condition was applied as simply supported at all boundaries, and the tripping of stiffener among failure mode under compression loading was neglected. These results were settled in the form of reduction ratio between ultimate of original intact stiffened plate and that of damaged stiffened plate.

  • Reduction Factor for Installation Damage required for calculation of design strength of geogrid used in MSEW(mechanically stabilized earth wall) design is usually obtained in the field test simulating real construction condition. However, damages occurred in geogrid during backfill work are influenced by many factors such as polymer types, unit weight per area, backfill construction method and gradation of backfill material and field test considering these factors demands lots of time and costs. In this study, factors affecting installation damage are analyzed and empirical method for evaluating reduction factor for installation damage using maximum particle size in backfill material is suggested.

  • In this study, we evaluated tendency and degree of corrosion damages of Inconel 600 after chemical decontamination treatments under three different conditions. In the decontamination processes, the oxidation and reduction were performed as one cycle. Each process was continued up to 5 cycles. Characteristics of corrosion under decontamination processes were evaluated by Tafel analysis and weight loss. Characteristics of surface damage were observed by scanning electron microscope(SEM) and three-dimensional(3D) microscope. As the cycle proceeded, weight loss and corrosion current density increased. Intergranular corrosion damage occurred on the surface of the materials. The result revealed that the surface of Inconel 600 was attacked by the strong acid solution under all chemical decontamination processes, but the degree of the corrosion damage was different depending on the processes.
