Trends in Mobile Ransomware and Incident Response from a Digital Forensics Perspective

  • Recently, the number of mobile ransomware types has increased. Moreover, the number of cases of damage caused by mobile ransomware is increasing. Representative damage cases include encrypting files on the victim's smart device or making them unusable, causing financial losses to the victim. This study classifies ransomware apps by analyzing several representative ransomware apps to identify trends in the malicious behavior of ransomware. We present a technique for recovering from the damage, from a digital forensic perspective, using reverse engineering ransomware apps to analyze vulnerabilities in malicious functions applied with various cryptographic technologies. Our study found that ransomware applications are largely divided into three types: locker, crypto, and hybrid. In addition, we presented a method for recovering the damage caused by each type of ransomware app using an actual case. This study is expected to help minimize the damage caused by ransomware apps and respond to new ransomware apps.

  • In this study, an integrated damage identification system (IDIS) using modal information to detect damage in structures is presented. The main dobjective is to develop a system of softwares that facilitates detecting damage locations and estimating damage severities in bridges. Firstly, theoretical background for IDIS is outlined. Secondly, a GUI-based IDIS software scheme are programmed. Finally, the feasibility and applicability of the IDIS software are experimentally demonstrated using small-scaled plate-girder models.

  • In recent years, the number of unforeseen weather hazards increased significantly, and subsequent financial loss in public and private sector has increased as well. Research has been increasingly focused on the actual damage assessment in the event of a disaster through effective and comprehensive disaster countermeasures to deal with and improve a better anti-disaster strategy. Through investigation of existing domestic and foreign property loss related to current damage analysis, the comparison and analysis in terms of current estimated methodology of the full extent of the damage results is proposed. In this study, a more efficient damage index and natural disaster damage assessment is suggested and more specifically, the basic standards of declared disaster areas and the strength of private property damage index will be also be discussed.

  • In recent studies for explaining the causation of crime fear shows interest and effort in studies attempting microscopical individual level and macroscopical local level of sex, age, economic level, crime damage level and etc. However, in this study, it is considered that interest and analysis of individual on characteristics of these local level may has its difference depends on crime damage experience in the past, fragility precision of crime damage and interest on crime relating information and processed positive analysis on characteristics of individual and relation of crime fear on individual level before making an attempt of connecting microscopical level and macroscopical level. Therefore, the purpose of this study is on positive verification of how people feel about crime fear depends on individual's characteristic and also how much effect would they receive. As the result of this study, it is shown that first, population statistical characteristics that crime damage experience is statistically meaningful of its difference of each group are age, status of marriage, final education status and residential area and for the fragility precision of crime damage was sex and status of marriage and for the interest about the crime relating information has meaningful difference statistically of each group depends on sex, age, final education status, income of the house and location of residential area. Second, after processing correlation analysis on individual characteristic primary factor and crime fear, the result of 3 primary factor independent variable all shows statistically meaningful correlation with crime fear and especially fragility primary factor on crime damage showed the most high correlation with crime fear. Lastly, fragility of crime damage, interest on crime information and crime damage experience has effected as characteristics of individual and especially fragility of crime damage which the person thought to be the most fragility on crime damage out of these individual characteristic primary factor showed to have the most effecting primary factor.

Drosophila melanogaster: a Model for the Study of DNA Damage Checkpoint Response

  • The cells of metazoans respond to DNA damage by either arresting their cell cycle in order to repair the DNA, or by undergoing apoptosis. This response is highly conserved across species, and many of the genes involved in this DNA damage response have been shown to be inactivated in human cancers. This suggests the importance of DNA damage response with regard to the prevention of cancer. The DNA damage checkpoint responses vary greatly depending on the developmental context, cell type, gene expression profile, and the degree and nature of the DNA lesions. More valuable information can be obtained from studies utilizing whole organisms in which the molecular basis of development has been well established, such as Drosophila. Since the discovery of the Drosophila p53 orthologue, various aspects of DNA damage responses have been studied in Drosophila. In this review, I will summarize the current knowledge on the DNA damage checkpoint response in Drosophila. With the ease of genetic, cellular, and cytological approaches, Drosophila will become an increasingly valuable model organism for the study of mechanisms inherent to cancer formation associated with defects in the DNA damage pathway.

Damage-Based Seismic Performance Evaluation of Reinforced Concrete Frames

  • A damage-based approach for the performance-based seismic assessment of reinforced concrete frame structures is proposed. A new methodology for structural damage assessment is developed that utilizes response information at the material level in each section fiber. The concept of the damage evolution is analyzed at the section level and the computed damage is calibrated with observed experimental data. The material level damage parameter is combined at the element, story and structural level through the use of weighting factors. The damage model is used to compare the performance of two typical 12-story frames that have been designed for different seismic requirements. A series of nonlinear time history analyses is carried out to extract demand measures which are then expressed as damage indices using the proposed model. A probabilistic approach is finally used to quantify the expected seismic performance of the building.

An efficient method for structural damage localization based on the concepts of flexibility matrix and strain energy of a structure

  • An efficient method is proposed here to identify multiple damage cases in structural systems using the concepts of flexibility matrix and strain energy of a structure. The flexibility matrix of the structure is accurately estimated from the first few mode shapes and natural frequencies. Then, the change of strain energy of a structural element, due to damage, evaluated by the columnar coefficients of the flexibility matrix is used to construct a damage indicator. This new indicator is named here as flexibility strain energy based index (FSEBI). In order to assess the performance of the proposed method for structural damage detection, two benchmark structures having a number of damage scenarios are considered. Numerical results demonstrate that the method can accurately locate the structural damage induced. It is also revealed that the magnitudes of the FSEBI depend on the damage severity.

  • An accumulated crack damage which propagates progressively with time was frequently observed on several engineering structures, This paper numerically demonstrates this damage process on large cooling tower shells under thermal and wind loads. Damage states under varying loads are investigated and the influence of this progressive damage process on the life-cycle of cooling towers discussed. The paper presents briefly some fundamentals of the geometrically and physically non-linear numerical analysis employed for reinforced concrete, especially concerning the models used for concrete, steel reinforcement and the bond between them. As a numerical example an existing cooling tower with noticeable meridian crack damage is analysed. The existing damage state of the cooling tower is determined by quasi-static analyses for temperature, hygric and cyclic wind leading. The change in the dynamical behaviour of the structure as mirrored in its natural frequencies and mode shapes is presented and discussed. Finally, the example shows that such damage processes develop progressively over the life-time of the structures.

  • This paper presents a signal processing procedure to detect damage locations of frame structures by using continuous wavelet transform. Morlet wavelet is used as a mother wavelet in wavelet transform. Wavelet transform has the characteristics that allows the use of long time intervals at more precise low-frequency information, and shorter regions at high-frequency information. By this wavelet transform characteristics, Morlet wavelet may be used to identify the locations of damages in the structures. The numerical case studies show that this method can be applied to detect the damage location under a controlled sweeping load.
