  • Since considerable time passed after completion of dam construction, Methods to judge the safety and/or to manage effectively have extreme limitation and restriction. Behavior analysis based on one point (site) by such as surface settlement gauge is typically performed in order to define deformation characteristic of dam. However, deformation characteristics of entire dam can not be analyzed by this method. This study adopted state-of-the-art terrestrial laser scanning technology, and developed the technology to analyze the entire deformation of dam. The analysis was compare with the outputs of surface settlement gauge to confirm the performance of 3D terrestrial laser scanning technology. As a result, through analyses of laser scanning data and the surface settlement gauge data, the studied dam shows behavior of deformation by own weight of dam. It is possible to confirm that the dam is entering the stage of stabilization presently.

  • To get the possible for management and maintenance, it was analyzed the deformation characteristics, such as crest of embankment and concrete face slab, and leakage of concrete faced rockfill dams (CFRD). There are trends that embankment deformation depends on intact strength used rockfills rather than dam height, deformation normal to concrete face slab during the first reservoir filling is occurred more than 80% of the total deformation in general, and the magnitude and trend of concrete face slab deformation is similar to post-construction crest settlement. The results showed that the range of post-construction crest settlement suggested by Sherard and Cooke (1987), and Clements (1984) had a good agreement in the cases using rockfill with very high intact strength, but it had a trend which underestimated crest settlement in the cases using rockfill with medium to high intact strength. The maximum leakage rate in general was observed during the first reservoir filling and long-term leakage rate was rapidly increased when the dam height exceeds approximately 120m.

  • Recently, the projects which are to increase the capacity of the flood control are being actively performed because of the abnormal climate changes throughout the country. In this study, the regression analysis was performed using both Kelvin model and the real settlement measured at the crest of the existing concrete face rockfill dam(CFRD) to estimate the long-term deformation behavior characteristics such as creep which occurs without additional load. In addition, the effects on changes in physical properties (E, G, K) of the dam construction materials by deformation characteristics of the dam were evaluated, and the reasonable stability analysis method of the dam was proposed to obtain the long-term stability considering the changes in physical properties induced by the long-term deformation behavior in case of heightening the existing dams.

  • For a fill dam, when a long time has passed since its completion, it is very hard to judge its safety and to maintain effectively it due to limitation and restriction in data showing safety status. Conventional method based on a specific point data by surface settlement gauge is commonly used to define deformation characteristic of dam. However, point data-based deformation analysis cannot provide deformation data of the entire dam. In this study a state-of-the-art terrestrial laser scanning technology is introduced to analyze the entire deformation of dam. As a result, it is known that 3D scanning technique can also be effectively used in evaluating dam safety and then establishing adequate maintain plan.

  • According to deformation data measured in some high concrete dams, for dam body deformation, there is a complex relationship with dam height and water head for different projects, instead of a simple monotonic relationship consistently. Meanwhile, settlement data of some large reservoirs exhibit a significant deformation of reservoir basin. As water conservancy project with high concrete dam and large storage capacity increase rapidly these decades, reservoir basin deformation problem has gradually gained engineers' attentions. In this paper, based on conventional analytical method, an improved analytical method for high concrete dam is proposed including the effect of reservoir basin deformation. Though establishing FEM models of two different scales covering reservoir basin and near dam area respectively, influence of reservoir basin on dam body is simulated. Then, forward and inverse analyses of concrete dam are separately conducted with conventional and proposed analytical methods. And the influence of reservoir basin deformation on dam working behavior is evaluated. The results of two typical projects demonstrate that reservoir basin deformation will affect dam deformation and stress to a certain extent. And for project with large and centralized water capacity ahead of dam site, the effect is more significant than those with a slim-type reservoir. As a result, influence of reservoir basin should be taken into consideration with conducting analysis of high concrete dam with large storage capacity.

  • In this study, the deformation behavior of Daegok dam during the construction was analyzed based on the measurement data and a comparative analysis with foreign CFRD measurements was performed. From measuring settlements of Daegok dam with depth, overall behavior was evaluated to be consistent with measured data of other CFRD dams. In addition, construction modulus, void ratio and shape factor were also evaluated to be major factors in predicting the settlement behavior during construction of CFRD-typed dam from measured data of 38 CFRD-typed dams, and the maximum internal settlement is proportional to the void ratio. From the relationship between the maximum internal settlement and the height of a dam, 26 dams were assessed to have its relative modulus ranging between 0.001 and 0.01. In case of general CFRD, the average modulus of maximum internal settlement to the height of a dam is estimated to be 0.005. In case of a low void ratio, the construction modulus was high with its shape factor below 4. On the other hand, in case of a high void ratio, the relative settlement rate was high with its shape factor more than 4.

  • Dams are inevitably planned to be built on thick overburden with high permeability and deformability. The connection part between concrete cut-off wall in overburden and earth core in dam body is not only a key part of the anti-seepage system, but also a weak position. Large uneven settlement will be aroused at the concoction part. However, the interaction behavior and the scope of the connection part cannot be determined effectively. In this paper, numerical analysis of a high earth core dam built on thick overburden was carried out with large deformation FE method. The mechanical behavior of the connection part was detail studied. It can be drawn that there is little differences in dam integral deformation for different analysis method, but big differences were found at the connection part. The large deformation analysis method can reasonably describe the process that concrete wall penetrates into soil. The high plasticity clay has stronger ability to adapt to large uneven deformation which can reduce stress level, and stress state of concrete wall is also improved. The scope of high plasticity clay zone in the connection part can be determined according to stress level of soils and penetration depth of concrete wall.

  • Structural design of the vertical displacements and shear strains in the earth fill (EF) dams has great importance in the structural engineering problems. Moreover, far fault earthquakes have significant seismic effects on seismic damage performance of EF dams like the near fault earthquakes. For this reason, three dimensional (3D) earthquake damage performance of Oroville dam is assessed considering different far-fault ground motions in this study. Oroville Dam was built in United States of America-California and its height is 234.7 m (770 ft.). 3D model of Oroville dam is modelled using FLAC3D software based on finite difference approach. In order to represent interaction condition between discrete surfaces, special interface elements are used between dam body and foundation. Non-reflecting seismic boundary conditions (free field and quiet) are defined to the main surfaces of the dam for the nonlinear seismic analyses. 6 different far-fault ground motions are taken into account for the full reservoir condition of Oroville dam. According to nonlinear seismic analysis results, the effects of far-fault ground motions on the nonlinear seismic settlement and shear strain behaviour of Oroville EF dam are determined and evaluated in detail. It is clearly seen that far-fault earthquakes have very significant seismic effects on the settlement-shear strain behaviour of EF dams and these earthquakes create vital important seismic damages on the swelling behaviour of dam body surface. Moreover, it is proposed that far-fault ground motions should not be ignored while modelling EF dams.

  • This paper presents the status of dam construction in Korea, along with a brief assessment of the dam design and construction practice. The assessment is based on publically available design and construction records of the major existing rockfill dams which have been constructed since early 1970's, and focussed in identifying geotechnical characteristics of design and construction parameters of the dams. Though the assessment, two representative dams, having unique geotechnical characteristics, are selected for comprehensive comparison of their geotechnical engineering behavior during construction and operation. The comparison yields very interesting findings on the effects of various design and construction parameters on dam behavior.

  • The purpose of present study performed 27 CFRD cases analyses to predict and effectively use post-construction crest settlement, face slab deformation, and leakage as indexes for the maintenance and management of concrete faced rockfill dams(CFRD). The results showed that the range of post-construction crest settlement suggested by Sherard and Cooke (1987), and Clements (1984) had a good agreement in the case analyses using rockfills with very high intact strength, but it had a trend which underestimated crest settlement in the cases using rockfills with medium to high intact strength. The leakage case analyses showed that leakage is mainly caused by face slab deformation due to the water load, the maximum leakage in general was observed during the first reservoir filling, and leakage was rapidly increasing when the dam height exceeds 125m.
