Studies on Cysticercus tenuicollis II. Local Distribution of the Infected Swine (세경낭충(細頸囊蟲)에 관한 연구(硏究) II. 감염돈(感染豚)의 지역적(地域的)인 분포조사(分布調査))

  • At the Seoul first slaughter house, 2,964 heads of swine were examined for the infection and distribution of Cysticercus tenuicollis. The results were summarized as follows. 1. The Cysticercus tenuicollis were detected from 106 heads of swine and the infection rate were 3.58 percent. 2. Incidence at each province were 5.7% in Jeon-ra-puk Do, 4.4% in Chung-cheong-nam Do, 3.83% in Kyong-sang-nam Do, 3.57% in Jeon-ra-nam Do, 2.52% in Kang-won Do, 1.75% in Kyong-sang-puk Do, and Kyong-gi Do and Seoul City were not recognized. 3. The monthly variation of the infection of Cysticercus tenuicollis were not found nearly through a year. 4. The usual habitat of Cysticercus tenuicollis were recognized the omentum and liver, but unusually one case was found around the rectum.

  • Among taenited tapeworms inferting humans though pork or beef, Taenia solium Linnaeus 1758 and Taenia sagina Goeze 1782 have already been. Based on the morphologic characteristics of adult and metacestodes of Asian Taenia saginata, the third kind of human taeniid tapeworm konwn to disdute in Asian counteries, a new spscies name of Taenia asiatica is proposed. In addition to the known biology in their intermediate hosts, T.asiatica was diffierent morphologically from Taenia saginata Goeze 1782 in having the unarmed rostellum on the scolex of adlut, the large number of 'unterinetwigs' and the existence of 'posterior protuberance'. These structures in the gravid proglottids were used as taxonmic keys in taeniid tapeworms for the first time. T. asiatica metacestode (Cysticercus viscerotropica)was different morphologically from T. saginata metacestode (Cysticercus bovis) in having wartlike formations on external surface of the bladder wall.

  • An acephalic budding Cysticercus of 1.2 cm long was removed surgically at the abdominal wall of a Korean man. The worm revealed abnormal buds on the bladder wall and absence of suckers and hooklets in the scolex body. The buds were of two histologic types; branching bud covered with normal tegumentum and with subtegumental cells of normal density, and buds of proliferated subtegumental cells with lacunae formation. On the bases of the morphologic features, it was identified as a racemose cysticercus. This case confirms that its extracranial location is possible.

  • An electron microscopic study was performed to know the basic tegumental structure of Cysticercus cellulosae. The scolex and bladder portions of cysticerci (human and porcine strains) were prepared for transmission and scanning electron microscopy by conventional procedures. In general, the tegument of C. cellulosae showed the basic ultrastructure of cestode tegument on electron micrographs. The teguments of both scolex and bladder portions consisted of such components, i.e., an outer vesicular layer with numerous microtriches and inner filroug layer. Below the fibrous layer, there were layers of muscle bundles and tegumental cells. The microtriches which covered the surface of cysticercus revealed two distinctly different shapes. The characteristic bladder-like, elongated pyramid shaped "tetrahedrial form" was observed on the surface of the scolex portion, whereas the elongated cylindrical "filamentous form" was distributed on the stirface of bladder portion. In spite of the difference of isolated host and location, the cysticerci showed tole same result. But dimensional variations of the tegument according to topography of the worm were observed. The possibility of application in making differential diagnosis from other larval cestodes and possible functions of this larval tegument were discussed.

METACESTODES INFECTION IN BLACK BENGAL GOATS IN BANGLADESH

  • In this study out of 3036 Black Bengal goats examined, 1755(57.80%) were infected with different types of metacestodes. The metacestodes were Cysticercus tenuicollis(54.54%), Coenurus cerebralis(6.32%) and hydatid cysts(11.13%). Animals > 18 months old were relatively more susceptible to Cysticercus tenuicollis and Coenurus cerebralis infection. On the contrary, animals > 8 months to 18 months old were more susceptible to hydatid infection, Both male and female goats were found to be equally infected with the metacestodes. A fully grown Coenurus cerebralis was also recovered from the abdominal muscles of a goat. In Cysticercus tenuicollis infection, pathological effects were not so marked. However, in few cases of Coenurus cerebralis infection the bones of the skull were found to become thin and soft. The hydatid cysts were found to develop in the vital organs by replacing the tissues, thus impairing normal functions.

  • We studied the serological reaction between various antigenic components from Cysticercus cellulosae and IgG antibodies in sera of cysticercosis, sparganosis, hydatidosis patients and normal humans by ELISA and EITB. In serological tests by ELISA, we recognized cross reaction of Cysticercus antigenic components with IgG antibodies in heterologous sera such as sparganosis and hydatidosis patients or normal humans. The crude antigenic components of Cysticercus showed lower ELISA sensitivity in homologous sera from cysticercosis patients than heterologous sera from hydatidosis patients. A total of 31 polypeptide bands with 260 KDa~22 KDa molecular weights were detected by SDS-PAGE, and 11 of them showed strong intensity. Total 22 components of them were recognized by IgG antibodies in cysticercosis patients sera. However, 12 of them were recognized also by normal human sera, 11 were by sparganosis sera, and-21 were by hydatidosis patients sera. The crude antigenic components of 104 KDa, 82 KDa, 72 KDa, 59 KDa and 34 KDa molecular weights were nonspecific ones, which cross-reacted with sera of either cysticerco, =is, sparganosis, hydatidosis patients or normal humans.

  • In a survey of the internal parasites of 1000 swine at Quelpart Island (Cheju-do), Incidence of the parasites was 99.6 percent and negative result was 0.4 percent only. The results was obtained as follows; Metastrongylus apri-51.6% Ascarops strongylina-23.5% Hyostrongylus rubidus -4.1% Trichuris suis -34.8% Ascaris lumbricoides-64.3% Cesophagostomum spp. -74.9% Strongyloides ransomi-8.1% Cysticercus cellulosae -3.8% Cysticercus tenuicollis -17.1% Echinococcus -11.8% Coccidia -61.5% Balantidium coli -23.4%.

Clinical and Pathological Characteristics of Intraocular Cysticercosis

  • This study aimed to explore the clinical, radiological, and pathological characteristics of intraocular cysticercosis due to Taenia solium metacestode infection. Total 8 patients diagnosed with intraocular cysticercosis at the Red Cross Hospital of Yunnan Province, China were examined retrospectively. Patients with clear dioptic media had undergone fundus chromophotography. All patients underwent B ultrasonography of the ocular region (CT) successive scanning of the orbit and cerebral tissues. Parasites were extracted surgically and then examined pathologically. The fundus chromophotography showed a white and condensing scolex package in the vesicle. The B ultrasonic examination showed a vesicle-like echogenic mass in the vitreous chamber, in which the high-level echo spot was the cysticercus scolex. The pathological examinations showed that the vesicle wall exhibited hyaline degeneration, inflammatory cell infiltration, neuroglial fiber, and glial cell proliferation layers from the inside to the outside. The scolex is round and is composed of the outer tissue (the body wall) and the inner furrow tissue; these tissues migrated together. Primordially differentiated sucking discs were found in one case, but no hooklets were found. The inner scolex tissue was folded like a paper flower. The severity of intraocular disease is closely correlated with the pathophysiological processes of the cysticercus worm. Pathological examination of the intraocular lesions can help to evaluate the course of the disease as well as to provide a scientific basis for effective antiparasitic medication.
