  • The survival rate of PIT tagged fish was investigated for five Korean Cyprindae fish species, Acheilognathus lanceolatus (n=18, total length : $92.5{\pm}13.1mm$; body weight : $9.6{\pm}4.3g$), Hemibarbus labeo (n=28, TL : $220{\pm}74.4mm$; BW : $91.8{\pm}76.2g$), Zacco koreanus (n=13, TL : $116.5{\pm}23.8mm$; BW : $13.6{\pm}10.6g$), Zacco platypus (n=108, TL : $100.6{\pm}17.8mm$; BW: $8.7{\pm}4.8g$), Opsariichthys uncirostris amurensis (n=6, TL : $161.8{\pm}26.3mm$; BW : $27.5{\pm}18.3g$) with respect to applicability and effectiveness of PIT tagging. The survival rate were daily checked for 30 days. The survival rate was the highest and lowest for Z. koreanus and Z. platypus, respectively. The survival days were greater as fish total length increased. Based on these results, PIT tagging is not effective for Z. platypus, while PIT tagging for fish>150 mm was effect for field research.

  • Background: Habitat selectivity and ecology of freshwater fishes were studied in two selected streams and their junction point which consist a total of 39 microhabitats. The aims of this study were to describe the habitat preference and its availability to fish assemblage, as well as ecology, habitat use, and habitat characteristics. Methods: We collected fish with backpack electrofishing three times during August 2013, December 2013, and March 2014. Using a variation partitioning approach of R software, we studied the relationship of fish abundances with stream type, habitat type, and abundance of key macroinvertebrate taxa. Results: A total of 6554 fishes representing four species belonging to the family Cyprinidae were caught. A higher total fish abundance was recorded from Gereb Tsedo (4870; 74.3%) than from Elala stream (1684; 25.7%). Taking both streams together, the overall total relative fish abundance was significantly higher in pools (53%) than in runs (35%) and in riffles (12%) at P < 0.05. Species-wise comparisons showed that 71%, 15%, 13%, and 1% of the pool fish community were occupied by Garra blanfordii, Garra ignestii, Garra dembecha, and Garra aethiopica, respectively. Stream type, habitat type, and key macroinvertebrate taxa each explained a significant proportion of the variation in fish abundance. Based on the variation partitioning approach, fish abundance was higher in Gereb Tsedo stream (P < 0.01). Moreover, fish abundance increased with pool habitat type (P < 0.01) and with availability of key macroinvertebrate taxa (P < 0.01). Conclusion: Fish abundance differed between stream types, among habitats and among key macroinvertebrate taxa availability. Among the factors, habitat type was the most important driving factor behind variation among fish abundances, and pool supports the highest fish abundance.

  • The study on the spawning ecology of Sarcocheilichthys variegatus wakiyae at Jicheon stream, Korea was investigated from March 2016 to February, 2017. The sex ratio of male to female was 1 : 0.97 and there was no significant difference. The spawning season was from the end of April to the mid-July, and the peak of spawning period was from the beginning of May to the end of June. The average water temperature at this time was $18^{\circ}C$. According to frequency analysis of total length, it is presumed that the group with a total length of less than 51~70 mm was one year old, the 71~100 mm was two years old, and the group over 101 mm was three years old. They sexually matured when they were over two years. The average number of eggs in the ovaries was estimated as $428{\pm}194per$ matured female. The mature eggs were yellowish, oval, and had a mean diameter of $2.38{\pm}0.25mm$ and a short diameter of $1.98{\pm}0.20mm$.

  • This study investigated the characteristics of fish communities at the Lake Yedang, in 2013 to 2014 and 2017. During the survey period, there were 29 species of 10 families collected from 3 survey stations. Of them, Cyprinidae occupied 34.5% (14 species), Bagridae, Gobiidae 10.3% (3 species), and Cobitidae, Centrachidae were 6.9% (2 species) in the number of species, respectively. Korean endemic species were 4 species (13.8%) Abbottina springeri, Cobitis nalbanti, Pseudobagrus koreanus, Odontobutis interrupta and accounted for a low rate. There were 3 species (10.3%) exotic species including Carassius cuvieri, Lepomis macrochirus, Micropterus salmoides. As a result of community analysis, dominant index was 0.45~1.00, diversity index was 0.19~2.30 and richness index was 0.41~1.94.

  • Fishes are found in different lentic and lotic aquatic ecosystems. Determining the composition of fish communities is a crucial component of water quality evaluations and conservation strategies in flowing rivers. The present study is carried out to investigate fish species diversity, richness, and abundance in two second-order streams: Gereb Tsedo (GTS) and Elala in the Tekeze sub-basin. We collected fish with backpack electrofishing during August and December 2013 and March 2014. Fish species richness and the total number of species per stream and per microhabitat were calculated for each stream. Species diversity for each site was calculated using the Shannon index of diversity using the standard formula H' = -Σpi ln (pi). Diversity data among habitats and streams were compared using one-way analysis of variance (ANOVA) and Tukey post hoc comparisons, using the statistical software package STATISTICA 11. A total of 6,554 specimens representing four species: Garra blanfordii, Grra ignestii, Garra dembecha and Garra aethiopica, were caught. They are all indigenous riverine fish species of the family Cyprinidae. Fish abundance was significantly higher in GTS than Elala stream (t-test, t = 1.444, df = 3, p < 0.05). Across the two streams, the overall relative fish abundance was higher in pools, with 53%, followed by runs and riffles with 35% and 12%, respectively. Garra blanfordii was dominant in pools while G. aethiopica was the least dominant. Stream and habitat types were likely the more important driving factors behind the observed patterns of diversity, although the impact of other, not evaluated variables cannot be excluded. Most likely, the observed patterns do not represent a signature of fish dispersal limitation given that almost all species were widely distributed across the study area.

  • Studies on the microdistribution, distributional aspect and affinity of Korean endemic species, SHIRl, Coreoleueiseus splendidus in th southern half of the Korean peninsula were carried out from May, 1966 to November, 1989. This species was found in 14 independent rivers and streamlets of the south Korea ; Yimjin R., Han R., Kum R., Ungchun S., Mangyung S., Dongjin R., Somjin R., Kwangyang East S., Sachun S., Gonyang S., Nakdong R., Samchukosip S., Samhwa S. of Namhae Island and Guchun S. of Geojae Islands, and were not found from Youngsan R., Ansung S. and Sabgyo S. This species was not common and independent comprising less than 25% of the total fish population in all habiting sites. Distributional zone was in the middle or upper streaches of main streams and tributaries. The average slope of distributional zone was 2.6, minimum slope was 0.29 and maximum slope was 5.56. Thirty-three species were found to occur along with this fish and 10 species of them occurred with more than 50% frequency. They were; 20 sp. of Cyprinidae, 5 sp. of Cobitidae, 1 sp. of Salmonidae, 1 sp. of Bagfridae, 1 sp. of Siluridae, 2 sp. of Amblycipitidae, of Serranidae, and 1 sp. of Eleotridae. Some species of fish appeared to have the same ecological position even though they have different distributional zones. These species were as follows; Acheilognathus signifer and A. limbata, Micriophsogobio koreensis and M. yaluensis in Cyprinidae, Cobitis koreensis, C. longicorpus, C. rotundicaudata in Cobitidae, Liobagrus andersoni and L. mediadiposalis in Amblycipitidae.

  • We measured a set of 37 morphological characteristics in 97 specimens of adult Korean chub, Zacco koreanus, trapped in the Milyang River, Korea, in May and October of 2005. Twelve out of thirty-seven morphometric measurements were significantly different between the sexes. In particular, both the pectoral fin length and the direct distance between the insertion of the dorsal fin and the insertion of the anal fin were highly significant (p < 0.001). This sexual dimorphism may reflect the outcome of sexual selection in this species.

  • A suspected intergeneric hybrid cross between Pungtungia herzi and Pseudopungtungia nigra was collected at the Ungcheon River. Overall hybrid index did not show the hybrid connection clearly, but the most striking key character between two genus, pigmentation on the all fins except pectoral, the shape and position of the mouth part appeared to show the intermediary. So this specimen was thought to be an intergeneric natural hybrid which merits further study.

  • This study investigated the characteristics of the eggs and yolk sac larvae of Korean striped bitterling, Acheilognathus yamatsutae, spawned and grown In mussels. The number of eggs in the ovary was small ($358{\pm}108$ SD). The eggs were oval and large, and the formation of the perivitelline space was narrow. The eggs were hatched at only 41 hours after fertilization but the hatched larvae were underdeveloped. The development of yolk projection and minute tubercles on the skin surface was notable, along with the vividly moving tail in the hatched larvae. The yolk projection and minute tubercles were disappeared upon enhancement of the motor ability of the larvae was enhanced. The formation of eyes and body pigments of the larvae was relatively delayed in comparison with that of other cyprinid larvae. After completely consuming the yolks the larvae escaped from the mussel for free swimming and exogenous feeding.
