  • The purpose of the paper is to investigate the noise characteristics of cylindrical roller bearings. For the sake of simplicity, it is assumed that the cylindrical roller bearing is infinitely long, and there is no outside force acting on the bearing. The effects of radial clearance of the bearing, viscosity of the lubricant and number of the roller on the noise of the bearing are also examined. Results show that the fundamental frequency of the bearing noise corresponds to the multiplication of number of the roller and whirling frequency of the roller center or the retainer. The acoustical frequency spectra of the roller bearing are pure tone spectra, containing the fundamental frequency of the bearing and its superharmonics. The low viscosity of the lubricant, high radial clearance of the bearing, and low number of the roller decrease the bearing noise. The results and discussions of the present paper could aid in the lownoise design of the cylindrical roller bearing.

  • Various prediction methods for the bearing capacity of helical piles have been introduced with consideration of both the steel shaft and the helix plates attached to the shaft. In this paper, three representative methods, that is, individual bearing method, cylindrical shear method, and torque correlation method are discussed and compared to each other. The prediction methods were verified by comparing with a series of loading test results performed on moderate-size helical piles from the companion paper. As a result, the measured bearing capacity is greater than the bearing capacity predicted by the cylindrical shear method, but smaller than that of the individual bearing method. In addition, the bearing capacity predicted by the torque correlation method is in good agreement with the measured bearing capacity.

  • In this paper, an actively controlled aerostatic bearing is studied to overcome the defects of air bearing such as low stiffness and damping coefficients. The actively controlled aerostatic bearing is composed of aerostatic bearings, non-contact type of displacement sensors, piezoelectric actuators and controllers. The cylindrical capacitance sensor (CCS) is used as the displacement sensor. The reason for using CCS instead of the commercial gap sensor is that it can give us the pure error motion of the spindle because it removes the roundness error or the geometric errors in the spindle. The controller is designed by the state space equation and quadratic optimal control theory. The characteristic data of the actively controlled aerostatic bearing system in the frequency domain are presented and the stiffness and damping coefficients of the bearing are mentioned. This paper shows the possibility to reduce the motion error up to 6000 rpm.

  • In this study, the effect of dimensions and location of oil grooves on the static performance of a cylindrical journal bearing is analyzed numerically. Axial length, circumferential length and location of oil grooves are considered as parameters. Cavitation occurs within the diverging region of a journal bearing. The distribution of cavitation region where cavitation occurs varies with dimensions and location of oil grooves and affects the performance of a journal bearing. Elrod's cavitation algorithm which implements JFO boundary conditions based on the principle of mass conservation at the interfaces between cavitation and full film region is adopted in order to consider the effect of cavitation. The result shows that parameters, especially location of oil grooves have a great effect on the static performance of a journal bearing.

  • This paper presents a dynamic modeling method for the indeterminate spindle-bearing system supported by multiple bearings of different types. A spindle-bearing system supported by ball and cylindrical roller bearings is considered. The de Mul's bearing model is extended for calculating ball and cylindrical roller bearing stiffness matrices with inclusion of centrifugal force and gyroscopic moment. The dependence between spindle shaft reaction forces and bearing stiffness is effectively resolved using an iterative approach. The spindle rotor dynamics is established with the Timoshenko beam theory based finite elements. The spindle reaction forces, bearings stiffness and spindle natural frequencies are obtained with taking into account spindle radial load, ball bearing axial preload and rotational speed effects. The developed method is verified by comparing the simulation results with those from a commercial program.

  • The cylinder without seal has a piston with air bearing which is partly cylindrical and conical shape. The description of system geometry is deviation by the flow rate equation. Then pressure distribution and bearing force equations are derived. Several non-dimensional parameters are suggested. The relationship among bearing force, leakage flow and geometry of the bearing is investigated by simulation. And determination method for optimal design of sealless cylinder is given. A prototype of sealless cylinder which had rod bearing with four pockets, five pockets, and six pockets was built respectively. As a result of leakage flow test, it is evaluation to air bearing in sealless cylinder.

  • The sending characteristics of the non-contact type displacement transducers can affect the performances of the magnetic bearing systems when they support the rotating shaft. The probe type displacement sensor detects not only the displacement of the rotor at the sensing position but also the surface irregularitis of the rotor such as surface roughnessand roundness errors. If there exist such measuring errors, the magnetic bearing can not apply proper force against the rotor displacements for the detected signal is the input to the magnetic bearing controllers. The cylindrical shape capacitive transducer can detect the rotor displacement by the integral sum of the charges which are formed between the sensor plates and rotor so that it can reduce the detecting errors induced by the surface irregularities of the rotor. By theore- tical analysis, we compared the sensing characteristics of the cylindrical shape capacitive transducers for the rotors that have some sinusoidal irregularities with that of the ideal probe type displacement transducers.
