The Effects of Tunable Helmholtz Resonators on the Volumetric Efficiency in a Multi-cylinder Diesel Engine (가변 헬름홀츠 공진기가 다기통 디젤기관의 체적효율에 미치는 영향)

  • The volumetric efficiency is significantly affected by the behavior of pressure wave in induction system and exhaust pipe. By the motion of the piston, there exist pressure fluctuation in induction system which produce waves. Waves are propagated along a pipe bi-directional as they propagated through it, making compression wave and rare-faction(expansion) wave. These wave phenomena can affect to the volumetric efficiency. As a method of improvement of the volumetric efficiency, fuel economy and pollutant emission reduction particularly in low engine speeds, a side-branch additional tunable helmholtz resonator on the secondary pipe of intake system is proposed by use of their acoustic vibrations. Some of results are presented which deal with their physical phenomena for the wave action of intake system in a four-stroke three cylinders diesel engine.

Modeling of Drying Cylinders in Paper Plants (제지공장 가열 실린더의 모델링)

  • The purpose of the present study is to identify the drying cylinder model in paper plants and to analyze characteristics of process responses for changes in input variables. The model developed in this work is based on actual plant operation data and the steam pressure applied to the cylinder behaves as one the main variables. It is found that heat transfer coefficients from the condensate to the canvas could be represented as empirical relations based on heat conductivities and operation date. The effectiveness of the cylinder model is demonstrated by the measured moisture contents and web temperature. Using transfer functions derived from the cylinder model stability of the drying process is analyzed.

  • A general and efficient algorithm is proposed for the analysis of the frictionless elastic contact problems. It utilizes a simplex-type algorithm with a modified entry rule and incoporates finite element method to obtain flexibility matrices. The algorithmic solution is compared with the Hertzian solution for the contact problem between two cylinders to prove its accuracy and the contact problem between pin and piston rod is solved and compared with the numerical results of Frankavilla and Zienkiewicz to demonstrate the generality and effectiveness of the suggested algorithm. The contact problem between mating involute gear teeth at the worst load position is considered. The computed contact stress is smaller than the result of Hertz's theory applied to the contact between two kinematically equivalent discs and the contact area is larger than that of Hertz's theory.

  • Presented herein are the results of a laboratory study on structural loads (icing weight and wind loads) associated with icing formation on rigidly fixed, circular power-transmission cables and cylinders. The experiments were carried out using movable wind tunnel under two different conditions: refrigerated and non-refrigerated conditions. Temporal evolution of icing loads were determined in the refrigerated laboratory and wind loads for icings at several stages of icing formation were measured in the non-refrigerated laboratory.

  • The instability curve of a Rijke tube system was obtained accurately by following different paths of heat power and flow-rate for three regions and by defining its locus from the criterion based on the measured sound pressure levels. The unstable limits in the region of flow-rate lower than that at the minimal power are compared with previous data. To observe the effect of turbulence on the unstable limits, inflow turbulence was introduced by placing a bundle of circular cylinders upstream of the heating part ($50). The large-amplitude inflow fluctuation may delay the transition of the chamber acoustic mode to the unstable Bone even at a sufficient power.

  • A driving simulators of aircraft and vehicle may consist of hydraulic power systems with many single-rod cylinders. The single-rod hydraulic systems are convenient but need more robust control scheme in order to achieve a reliable performance against the wide range of operating disturbances and the inherent model uncertainties. $H_{\infty}$ control scheme was implemented to the 2 degree-of-freedom hydraulic device similar to the simple driving simulator. With the reasonable disturbances from sensor, base and pump and also with the linearization of model, the simulation and experimental results showed good agreements.

  • On the basis of theoretical studies on the effect of the cylinders attached to semi-infinite screens, the effect of the tangential sound power-transport along the cylindrical top section of noise barriers is studied. Four types of acoustical mechanism between the surface of the cylinder and the adjacent air particles are investigated, namely Z $\rightarrow$ $\infty$, Z $\rightarrow$ pc, Z $\rightarrow$ 0 and actively controlled surface sound field. In active control case the sound power parallel to the surface of the attached cylinder is minimized by means of a secondary sound field, which is generated from a part of the attached cylinder. In each case the change in the acoustical shadow zone was shown and compared. The numerical study shows the possibility of deflecting the incident sound by minimizing the acoustical surface impedance of the upper sections.

The numerical study shows the possibility of deflecting the incident sound by minimizing the acoustic surface impedance of the upper sections. The acoustical shadow region was more pronounced in both near- and far-field compared to the passive case with rigid surface, i.e. without active control. For a relatively wide frequency range it was possible to enhance shielding effects only with few secondary sources and error microphones. In this paper effects of some control parameters on the actively controlled sound field near the top edge of noise barriers are studied. Results of numerical study and model measurements are shown and discussed.

  • As a generalizing certain geometric property occurred on the helicoid of 3-dimensional Euclidean space regarding the Gauss map, we study ruled submanifolds in a Euclidean space with pointwise 1-type Gauss map of the first kind. In this paper, as new examples of cylindrical ruled submanifolds in Euclidean space, we construct generalized circular cylinders and characterize such ruled submanifolds and minimal ruled submanifolds of Euclidean space with pointwise 1-type Gauss map of the first kind.

EVALUATION OF VOLUME VELOCITY OF A LOUDSPEAKER IN A CHAMBER

  • The volume of an acoustic source is important in determining various acoustic parameters. One of the suggested techniques is the internal pressure method incorporating a loudspeaker attached to a chamber wall and a microphone inserted into the cavity. Although the method is easy to handle with a very simple measurement setup, the coupling effects between the dynamic system of the loudspeaker and acoustic field, and the effects of higher order modes introduced by the discontinuities in the acoustic field, and the effects of higher order modes introduced by the discontinuities in the acoustic field should be considered for precise result. In this study, higher order modes due to the discontinuities of loudspeaker and microphone boundaries are included and the electro-acoustic coupling effects are compensated for by using the results of two cylinders with different lengths. The volume velocity of a loudspeaker thus obtained agrees very with that measured by laser sensor.
