  • PURPOSE. Cementation failures of restorations are frequently observed in clinical practice. The purpose of this study is to compare the effect of initial and repeated bonding on the bond strengths of different resin cements to enamel and dentin. MATERIALS AND METHODS. Ninety human maxillary central incisors were bisected longitudinally. The 180 tooth halves were divided into 2 groups (n = 90) for enamel and dentin bonding. The enamel and dentin groups were further divided into 3 groups (n = 30) for different resin cement types. Composite resin (Filtek Ultimate) cylinders ($3{\times}3\;mm$) were prepared and luted to enamel and dentin using Variolink II (Group V), RelyX ARC (Group R), or Panavia F 2.0 (Group P) resin cement. After 24 hours, initial shear bond strengths of the resin cements to enamel and dentin were measured. Using new cylinders, the specimens were de-bonded and re-bonded twice to measure the first and the second bond strengths to enamel and dentin. Failure modes and bonding interfaces were examined. Data were statistically analyzed. RESULTS. Initial and repeated bond strengths to enamel were similar for all the groups. The first ($15.3{\pm}2.2\;MPa$) and second ($10.4{\pm}2.2\;MPa$) bond strengths to dentin were significantly higher in Group V (P<.0001). Second bond strengths of dentin groups were significantly lower than initial and first bond strengths to dentin (P<.0001). CONCLUSION. All resin cements have similar initial and repeated bond strengths to enamel. Variolink II has the highest first and second bond strength to dentin. Bond strength to dentin decreases after the first re-bonding for all resin cements.

  • As a new technical approach, a hydraulic and magnetic clamp device was attempted to realize a magnetic clamp crane system that uses 8 simultaneously actuating individual hydraulic cylinders. Through this approach, a Sr type of ferritic permanent magnet ($SrO{\cdot}6Fe_2O_3$), not the previously employed electro-magnet, was utilized for the purpose of lifting and transporting the heavy weighted and oversized curved steel plates used for manufacturing the ships. This study is aimed at manufacturing and developing the hydraulic magnetic clamp prototype, which is composed of three main parts - the base frame, cylinder joint, and magnet joint - in order to safely transport such curved steel plates. Furthermore, this research was pursued to conduct a performance evaluation as to the prototype manufacture and acquire the planned quantity value and the development purpose items. The most significant item for a performance evaluation was estimated for the magnetic adhesive force (G) and in this process, a ferritic permanent magnet (Sr type) with 3700~4000 G of residual induction (Br) and 2640/2770 Oe of coercive force (Hc) was utilized. In addition, other relevant items such as hoist tension (kN), transportation time (sec), and the applied load (Kgf) exerted on the hydraulic cylinders were also evaluated in order to acquire the optimum quantity value. As a result of the evaluation, the relevant device turned out to be suitable for safely transporting the curved steel plates.

  • Dense and periodic arrays of holes and tungsten none dots were fabricated on silicon oxide and silicon. The holes were approximately 25 nm wide, 40 nm deep, and 60 nm apart. To obtain nano-size patterns, self-assembling resists were used to produce layer of hexagonally ordered parallel cylinders of polymethylmethacrylate(PMMA) in polystyrene(PS) matrix. The PMMA cylinders were degraded and removed with acetic acid rinse to produce a PS mask for pattern transfer. The silicon oxide was removed by fluorine-based reactive ion etching(RIE). Selectively deposited tungsten nano dots were formed inside nano-sized trench by using a low pressure chemical vapor deposition(LPCVD) method. Tungsten nano dot and trenched silicon sizes were 26 nm and 30 nm, respectively.

  • Composite material is one of the strong candidates for deep see pressure hulls. Research regarding composite unstiffened or stiffened cylinders subjected to hydrostatic pressure has a couple of decades history abroad but domestic research is very new. Experimental investigations seem necessary to understand their structural behavior not only up to the ultimate limit state but in post-ultimate regime. Those experimental information will be very helpful to develop any theoretical methods or to substantiate any commercial numerical packages for structural analyses. In this study, ultimate strength tests on seven composite cylinders subjected to hydrostatic pressure are reported, which includes the fabrication method of models, material properties of the material, initial shape imperfection measurements, test procedure and strain and axial shortening measurements during the tests. The ultimate strengths of the models were compared with those of numerical analyses. The numerical predictions are higher than the test results. It is necessary to improve the accuracy of the numerical predictions.

  • As a new technical approach, a hydraulic and magnetic clamp device was developed to realize a magnetic clamp crane system by simultaneously actuating eight individual hydraulic cylinders. In this approach, an Sr-type of ferritic permanent magnet (SrO· 6Fe2O3), rather than the previous electromagnet, was utilized for the purpose of lifting and transporting the large curved steel plates used for manufacturing ships. This study had the goal of developing and manufacturing a hydraulic, magnetic clamp prototype composed of three main parts, including the base frame, cylinder joint, and magnet joint, in order to safely transport curved steel plates. Furthermore, this research included a performance evaluation of the manufactured prototype and acquired the purposed quantity value in the performance test. The most significant item, the magnetic adhesive force (G), was evaluated in a performance test, which utilized a ferritic permanent magnet (Sr type) with 3700~4000 G of residual induction (Br) and 2640/2770 Oe of coercive force (Hc). In particular, relevant items such as the hoist tension (kN), transportation time (s), and applied load (Kgf) on the hydraulic cylinders were also evaluated in order to determine the optimum values.

  • A Hybrid Finite Element Method(HFEM) is applied to solve the electrormagnetic scattering from multi-layered dielectric cylinders. An unbounde region is divided into local boundary regions where a practical differential equation solution is obtained, with the remaining unbounded region represented by a boundary integral equation. If sources, media inhomogeneities, and anisotropies are local, a surgace may be defined to enclose them. Therefore the integral region so defined is bounded, and differential techniques may be used there. Also, in the re- maining unbounded region a boundary integral equation may be formulated using only a simple free - space green's function. Therefore, The local boundary is represented by a boundary - value problem with boundary conditions and solved by the finite element method. The advantage of the proposed method is simple and efficient in the work of electromagnetic scattering. The validity of the results have been verified by comparing results of other method(boundary element method). Examples has been presented to calculate the scattered fields of lossy dielectric cylinders of arbitray cross section.

  • The effects of recirculated exhaust gas on the wear of cylinder liner piston and piston rings have been investigated by the experiment with a two-cylinder four cycle indirect injection diesel engine operating at 75% load and 1600 rpm speed For the purpose of comparison between the rates of two cylinders with and without EGR the recirculated exhaust gas is sucked into one of two cylinders after the soot among exhaust emissions is removed by an intntionally designed cylinder-type scrubber equipped with 6 water injectors(A water injector has 144 nozzles of 1.0 mm diame-ter) while only the fresh air into another cylinder. These experiments are carried out on the fuel injection at a fixed $15.3^{\circ}$ BTDC timing. It is found that firstly the mean wear amount of cylinder liner with EGR is more increased in the measurement positions of the second half than of the first half and the mean wear amount without EGR is almost uniform regardless of measurement posi-tions secondly the wear rates of the first and second piston ring(compression ring)thickness with EGR are more than twice but the wear rate of oil ring thickness without EGR is more increased than that with EGR and finally the wear rate of piston skirt with EGR is a little bit increased but the piston hed diameter is rather increased owing to soot adhesion and corrosion wear and espe-cially larger with EGR.

  • The Characteristics of the flowfield around three circular cylinders in tandem arrangement was investigated by PIV. Strouhal numbers, vorticity, velocity vectors and velocity profiles were observed at centre-to-centre space ratios of P/D=1.25~3.75, and Reynolds number of Re=$3.0{\times}10^3{\sim}5.0{\times}10^3$. As the results the Strouhal numbers measured in the rear region of 3rd the cylinder were distinguished three kind of regions with the space ratios and The flow pattern in the wake of each cylinder was different according to these regions. The time averaged flow at region of each cylinder was almost stagnated and the size of the stagnated region was small in order of 1st, 2nd and 3rd cylinder. The direction of vortex at the front and rear region of 2nd cylinder was opposed each other with the small difference(${\alpha}= {\pm}5^{\circ}$) of the attack angle ${\alpha}$.

  • The purpose of this study was to evaluate the shear bond strength between composite resin and glass ionomer cement according to surface treatment methods of glass ionomer cement. Sixty round acrylic cylinders were fabricated. And then, a round undercut cavity(8 mm diameter, 2.5mm depth) was prepared in the center of the every acrylic cylinder. After all cavities were restored by using light-cured glass ionomer cement. A total of sixty acrylic cylinders restored with glass ionomer cement were divided into 4 groups according to surface treatment methods of glass ionomer cement. The surface treatment of each group were as follows : control group : no treatment Group 1 : acid etching Group 2 : sandblasting Group 3 : air-podwer abrasive polishing The composite resin was bonded to glass ionomer cement of each specimens. And the shear bond strength was tested with a universal testing machine at a cross-head speed of 1mm/min and 500kg in full scale. The results were as follows : 1. The sandblasting group(group 2) had the highest shear bond strength with $272.50{\pm}24.96\;kg/cm_2$ and the acid etching group(group 1) had the lowest shear bond strength with $192.89{\pm}29.32kg/cm_2$. 2. The no treated group(control group) had higher shear bond strength than acid etching group(group 1) (p<0.05). 3. The sandblasting group(group 2), air-powder abrasive polishing group(group 3) and no treated group(control group) had higher shear bond strength than the acid etching group(group 1) (p<0.05). 4. The sandblasting group(group 2) and air-powder abrasive polishing group(group 3) had higher shear bond strength than the no treatment group(control group), but there was not significant(p>0.05).

  • Systematic distortions in perceived 3-D shape were obtained for elliptical and parabolic stereoscopic surfaces viewed at different distances under full and reduced cue conditions. In both conditions of Experiments 1 and 3, elliptical hemi-cylinders a appeared near veridical at the 45 cm viewing distances and flattened up to 74% of veridical at 135 cm. In Experiment 2, under full cue conditions, parabolic hemi-cylinders a appeared stretched to 118% of veridical at 45 cm, near veridical at 90 cm, and flattened to 85% of veridical at 135 cm. Under reduced cue conditions parabolas appeared flatter overall: veridical curvature was obtained at 45 cm viewing distance with flatness increasing to 68% of veridical at 135 cm. Results support a scaling explanation of perceived 3-D shape from disparity and rule out the alternative hypothesis that disparity curvature, an optical invariant, provides information for the direct perception of 3-D s shape.
