This study is conducted to investigate aerodynamic forces and wake structures about the pressure interference of a circular cylinder with slits. An experimental investigation of a circular cylinder with slits is carried out in uniform flow in the range of Reynolds number from 8,000 to 32,000 using X-type hot wire. Flow visualization is executed by smoke-wire method to understand the mechanism of these vortex formation process. Inspection in the wake at X/D=5.5 of the cylinder with the slits suggested that a strong vortex-shedding pattern for these cylinders is revealed compare with a circular cylinder without slits. It is found that the rolling up position of shear layer of the cylinder with slits is shorten compare with a circular cylinder without slits.
The rolling piston type rotary compressor has been widely used for refrigeration and air-conditioning systems due to its compactness and high-speed operation. The present study is one of studies to maximize the advantages of refrigerant compressors. In addition, because friction characteristics of the critical sliding component is essential in the design of refrigerant compressors, the present study also analyzed the lubrication characteristics of a rotary compressor used for refrigeration and air-conditioning systems. In order to measure the friction force between the vane and the rolling piston, an experimental apparatus known as the Pin-on-Disk was used. Load is applied by the hydraulic servo valve controlling the pressure of the hydraulic cylinder. The results showed that the rotational speed of the shaft, the operating temperature, and the discharge pressure significantly influenced the friction force between the vane and the rolling piston.
The purpose of the study is to provide a foundation in predicting a maximum wave force when the ocean structure is laid out under breaking wave. Experiments were conducted with a down-scaled cylindrical model installed in a wave generating water channel. Maximum wave slopes were changed in regular wave condition by the wave breaker in the water channel. Cylinder's diameters were changed to 0.1m and 0.05m, respectively. Using the PIV results qualitative analyses were performed based upon the previous knowledge.

In the pneumatic system, pneumatic cylinder is wildly used to factory automation. In general, Pneumatic cylinder problems are occured with colliding to stroke end part at which piston collide to end-cap, head cap and tube when piston is loading. This appearances have a short life of cylinder and is due to system destruction. This study examines the dynamic characteristics of pneumatic cushioning cylinder and cushion sleeve design. At head part cushion chamber for the vertical experimental, The decisions of cushioning effect and the results of the experimental research are obtained to the followings: i) The cushioning effects could acqure to the reserch, if the compressible energy is more than kinetic ones. ii) The collision of piston and head cover could acqure to the research, if the kinetic energy is more than compressible iii) If the load increase to the rolling car, the cushion region pressures would increase and the dynamic force.
Recently, focus has been drawn on natural refrigerants due to increasing concern on global warming. As a consequence, CO2 systems such as a heat pump water heater using CO2 as a refrigerant are rapidly growing on the market. Currently, rolling piston rotary compressors are widely used for CO2 heating and/or refrigeration systems. There are several ways of realizing gas compression structure. They are single stage compression with single cylinder, single stage compression with two cylinders, and two stage compression with two cylinders. In this paper, computer simulation program which was validated for a single stage rotary compressor with one cylinder has been extended for a single stage, two cylinder rotary type. Numerical investigation has been made on optimal design for the cylinder configuration using the extended simulation program. For a single stage two cylinder rotary compressor having a displacement volume of 4 cc for each cylinder, compressor efficiency has been found to be maximum when the cylinder radius and height are 31mm and 10mm, respectively.
Magneto-rheological elastomer (MR elastomer) is a smart material, because it has mechanical properties that change under a magnetic field. An MR elastomer changes its stiffness characteristics when the inner particles (iron particles) align along the direction of a magnetic field. There has been much research to make use of this characteristic to control vibration issues in various mechanical systems, such as for mounting systems in the automotive field, home appliances, etc. Furthermore, the friction and wear properties of MR elastomer have been studied, as these relate to the durability of the material needed to meet engineering requirements. Rolling friction (or rolling resistance) is one of these friction properties, but has not yet been studied in the context of MR elastomers. In this study, an MR elastomer is fabricated in the shape of a hollow cylinder to evaluate the rolling friction characteristic under a magnetic field. The test apparatus is setup and a strain gauge is used to calculate the rolling resistance under test conditions. Permanent magnets are used to supply the magnetic field during tests. The load and rolling speed conditions are also considered for the tests. The test results show that rolling friction characteristic has a different trend under different magnetic field, load, and rolling speed conditions. It is assumed that the stiffness change of an MR elastomer under a magnetic field has an effect on the rolling friction characteristic of the MR elastomer. For the future work, the rolling friction characteristics of MR elastomers will be controlled by adjusting the strength of the magnetic field using electromagnets.

Hydrodynamic moments produced by the rolling oscillation on the free surface and the associated swaying force were exactly calculated by Ursell-Tasai method for the cylinders with Kim's chine form sections($a_1,\;a_7$). The coefficient of the added moment of inertia $K_{\varphi^{\tau}}$, the progressive wave height ratio $\bar{A}$, the coefficient of swaying forces $K_{RS}$, ${\alpha}_{RS}$ of rolling oscillations are shown in the several figures. The results of the computation were compared with those of lewis form sections. It is concluded that the effect of the section form on the added moment of inertia is significant for the cylinder with the section of same beam-draft ratio and sectional area coefficient, on the other hand, a little effect appears on the wave damping.
The characteristics of wake galloping phenomenon for two parallel/unparallel circular cylinders were investigated via wind tunnel tests. The two cylinders were initially deployed in parallel and wake galloping phenomena were observed by varying the center-to-center distance. The effect of an unparallel arrangement of two cylinders was next investigated by fixing the spacing ratio of one side of the cylinders at 5.0D and the other side at 3.0D, in which D represents the diameter of the cylinder. For the unparallel disposition, the 5.0D side showed a small, limited vibration while the 3.0D side produced much larger amplitude of vibration, resulting in a rolling motion. However, the overall amplitude appeared to decrease in unparallel disposition when compared with the amplitude of the 3.0D - 3.0D parallel case. This represents the mitigation effect of wake galloping due to the unparallel disposition between two cylinders. Flow visualization tests with particle image velocimetry were conducted to identify flow fields between two cylinders. The test results demonstrate the existence of a complex interaction of the downstream cylinder with the shear layer generated by the upstream cylinder. When the spacing ratio was large enough, the shear layer was not observed and the downstream cylinder showed only limited random vibration.
Turbulent flows in a intake part of vacuum cleaner are studied by RANS simulations. The governing equations are solved by the SIMPLE algorithm based on the finite volume method of the unstructured grid system. The predicted results show that the suction performance is closely related to the variation of flow structure in the intake part. In order to investigate for the cleaning of bedclothes and carpet without sticking, several design changes are applied. The introduction of a solid cylinder in the intake part changes vortical structures significantly. Based on this result, a new design with spiral brushes is proposed. The design shows a good behavior for the suction performance and the flow control.

For a R410A-rolling piston type rotary compressor model which was modified by reducing the cylinder height and shaft eccentricity from R22-compressor version, numerical simulation has been carried out and simulation results have been found to be compared fairly well with those of measurements. EER of this first version of R410A compressor was 4.8% lower than that of R22 compressor. To improve the performance of the R410A compressor model, parametric study on the design parameters related to the discharge port system has been performed by using the numerical simulation program, and optimum conditions for the highest EER have been obtained with the aid of Taguchi method. With the optimized discharge port configuration, EER has been improved by 1.7%.
