Cylinder shaped air-breathing PEMFC has been developed to have small volume, low contact resistance and better air accessibility to the open cathode. This cylinder shaped design consists of an anode cylinder with helical flow channel and a cathode current collector with slits. The pressure distribution measurement according to the shapes was performed. The test result indicated that cylinder shaped fuel cell has better pressure distribution compared with the planar shaped fuel cell. The better pressure distribution was connected to the higher performance. The maximum power density of cylinder shaped fuel cell was about 20% higher than the planar shaped fuel cell. The maximum power density of the developed cylinder shaped air-breathing PEMFC with dry hydrogen was $220\;mW/cm^2$ and with humidified hydrogen was $293\;mW/cm^2$.

Pneumatic cylinder is widely used fur mechanical handling systems. Often, the impact occurs at the both ends points of pneumatic cylinder and generates the destructive shock with in the structural operating members of the machine or equipment. To reduce the damage of system, therefore, shock absorbing devices are required. Cushioning of pneumatic cylinders at one or both ends of piston stroke is used to reduce the shock and vibration. The cylinder body have to withstand under conditions of high velocity and load. In this research pneumatic cushioning cylinder moving tests have been conducted for different load mass and supply pressure. The velocity of pneumatic cylinder actuation system which is set vertically with multiple orifice cushion sleeve is controled with the meter-in/out control system. This study examines the dynamic characteristics of pneumatic cylinder which are used as cushion devices. It turns out that the cushion pressure is mainly a function of the external load rather than the supply pressure. The cushion region characteristics was also revealed in the meter-in control system.
A new MR cylinder with built-in valves using MR fluid (MR valve) is proposed for fluid power control systems. The MR or Magneto-Rheololgical fluid is a newly developed functional fluid whose obvious viscosity is controlled by the applied magnetic field intensity. The MR cylinder is composed of cylinder with small clearance and piston with electromagnet. The differential pressure is controlled by the applied magnetic field intensity. It has the characteristics of simple, compact and reliable structure. The size of MR cylinder and piston has ${\varphi}$60mm${\times}$259mm and ${\varphi}$58mm${\times}$136.5mm in face size respectively and 0.8mm in gap length. Through experiments on the static characteristics, it is found that the differential pressure is controlled by the applied magnetic field intensity under little influence of the flow rate, which corresponds to a pressure control valve. Effectiveness of the MR cylinder is demonstrated through the position control of one link MR manipulator.
The measurement system of the pressure in engine cylinder is developed with the aids of the microcomputer, A/D converter and simple electrical circuits. The experiment is performed in 4 cycle single cylinder Gasoline engine. When data for the pressure progress is sampled, clock signal or signal from the crank angle is used as trigger. The variation of the pressure during the cycles can be well obtained experimentally. So, the informations which are necessary in the combustion analysis, i.e. expansion pressure, indicated mean effective pressure, the magnitude and time of the maximum pressure ignition time, the rate of pressure rise and heat release and combustion rates can be obtained by the calculation using experimental data. Also, the informations about the after-burning process, the existence of the detonation waves and end time of combustion can be investigated from this study.
Intake air conditions, such as air temperature, pressure, and humidity, are very important parameters that influence engine performance including combustion and emissions characteristics. The purpose of this study is to investigate the effects of intake air temperature on combustion and exhaust emissions characteristics in a single cylinder diesel engine. In this experiment, an air cooler and a heater were installed on the intake air line and a gas flow controller was installed to maintain the flow rate. It was found that intake air temperature induced the evaporation characteristics of the fuel, and it affects the maximum in-cylinder pressure, IMEP(indicated mean effective pressure), and fuel consumption. As the temperature of intake air decreases, the fuel evaporation characteristics deteriorate even as the fuel temperature has reached the auto-ignition temperature, so that ignition delay is prolonged and the maximum pressure of cylinder is also reduced. Based on the increase in intake air temperature, nitrogen oxides(NOx) increased. In addition, the carbon monoxide(CO) and unburned hydrocarbons(UHC) increased due to incomplete fuel combustion at low intake air temperatures.
At present, the principle of puffer action in high current interruption is adopted in almost of the EHV(Extra High Voltage) and UHV(Ultra High Voltage) GCB(Gas Circuit Breakers). The thermal interruption capability of these GCBs critically depends on the pressure rise in the puffer cylinder at current zero. The pressure rise in the puffer cylinder depends on the puffer cylinder volume, flow passage and leakage area in the interrupter, stroke curve etc. Recently commercial CFD(Computational Fluid Dynamics ) packages have been widely adopted to calculate the pressure distribution in the interrupter. However, there are still several problems with it, e.g. very expensive price, moving boundary problem, computation time, difficulty in using the package etc. Thus, the calculation of the puffer cylinder pressure in simple and relatively correct method is essential in early stage of GCB design. In these paper, the model ing technique and computed results for EHV class GCB (HICO, 145kV 40kA and 362kV 40kA GCB) are presented and compared with available measured results.
A clutch hydraulic system for automotive manual transmissions transfers hydraulic pressure generated by driver's pedal manipulation to the clutch mechanism. The foot effort when the clutch pedal is pushed is different than that when the clutch is returned. The effort or load difference, called hysteresis, is caused by the friction produced between rubber seal and inner wall inside the hydraulic cylinder. This clutch pedal travel foot effort hysteresis is essential for a clutch hydraulic system design and analysis. The dynamic model for a clutch hydraulic system is developed and a simulation analysis is performed to estimate the fiction coefficient as a function of the cylinder pressure. The simulation result is then compared to the measurements obtained from a clutch hydraulic system tester to ensure the reliability of the dynamic model and the coefficients estimated. Also the estimated friction coefficients at various pressure values are compared to those reported by an independent study.
The effect of the intake flow on the spray structure of a high pressure 11-hole fuel injector were examined in a single cylinder optical direct injection spark ignition (DISI) engine. The effects of injection timing and in-cylinder charge motion were investigated using the 2-dimensional Mie scattering technique. It was confirmed that in the homogeneous charge mode, the in-cylinder swirl charge motion played a major role in the fuel spray distribution during the induction stroke rather than the tumble flow. But, in the stratified charge mode, the effect of the in-cylinder charge was not so large that the injected spray pattern was nearly maintained and the increase of in-cylinder pressure by the upward moving piston reduced the fuel spray penetration.
In this analytical study on the engine coolant flow of a heavy-duty diesel engine with 4 valves and linear-type 8 liter 6 cylinders, the characteristics of pressure drop and engine cooling performance with the additional coolant passages between cylinder blocks have been investigated. Since the most part of pressure drop is caused by the coolant flow passages inside a cylinder head and cylinder blocks for this type of heavy-duty diesel engines, the advantage of pressure drop is just 2.6% and the characteristics of heat transfer and the distribution of coolant velocities in the head part show little differences in case of additional coolant passages. Thus the coolant flow passages between cylinder blocks make little contribution on the cooling performance of heavy-duty diesel engines
