To develop the code of predicting flow-field and aeroacoustic noise by a electrical cable, a combined CFD-acoustic analogy approach is selected. The two-dimensional, unsteady, incompressible Reynolds-Averaged Navier-Stokes solver with a ${\kappa}{\omega}$, ${\kappa}{\omega}$ SST turbulence modeling is used to calculate the near-field around electrical cable. Near-field results are then coupled with two-dimensional Curle's integral formulation based upon Lighthill's acoustic analogy with an assumption of acoustic compactness. To validate this code, numerical results are compared with experimental data for a circular cylinder. The simulation shows an overprediction on acoustic amplitudes, but overally speaking, the spectrum pattern of sound pressure agrees well with experiment in an acceptable amount of error. In addition, various cross sections of a cable were selected and compared with each other in terms of drag and radiated noise.
This paper provides V-factor estimation under combined mechanical and thermal load for circumferential cracks. Results are based on finite element analyses and effect of types and magnitudes of the thermal stress, crack geometry, the loading mode and plastic strain hardening on variations of the V-factor are investigated. The results of finite element analyses are compared with R6 values. As a result, it is shown that R6 gives generally conservative results. The conservatism is especially increased for the combination of large mechanical and thermal load. As a result, new estimation method which uses failure assessment line in R6 is proposed for V-factor and gives less conservative results.
Small-amplitude harmonic oscillations of multi-cylinders are considered both experimentally and theoretically. For the theoretical model, the flow regime is separated into inner and outer regions. In the inner region, the flow is governed by the generalized Stokes boundary layer equation. In the outer region, the full Navier-Stokes equation for the steady streaming flow is solved numerically by using ADI scheme and FVM coupled with the boundary integral method. Flow visualization experiments are conducted by using the Laser Sheet Image Technique. The case of two circular cylinders and square cylinders with variable distances are chosen as a typical example. Although experimental results are based on the flow in the finite domain, both experimental and numerical results agree well qualitatively. As the separation of cylinders is increased, a numerical result shows the asymptotic convergence to a single cylinder case.
Most naval underwater weapon system can be simplified to a circular cylindrical structure which has vibrating machineries inside. In order to predict efficiently the total acoustic radiation power of cylindrical structure, surface velocity is measured and radiation efficiency of surface element is calculated. Then, they are substituted to the surface pressure in the simplified Helmholtz integral equation which assumes acoustic far-field and plane-wave approximation at the surface. Surface velocity and total acoustic radiation power for a submerged cylinder are measured in water-tank. In this example, it is found that total acoustic power output obtained from the prediction is in good agreement with that of measurement in mid-high frequency range.
The finite element alternating method is a convenient and efficient method to analyze three-dimensional cracks embedded in an infinite or a finite body because the method has the property that the uncracked body and cracks can be modeled independently. In this paper the method was applied for fatigue crack growth simulation. A surface crack in a cylinder was considered as an initial crack and the crack configurations and stress intensity factors during the crack growth were obtained. In this paper the finite element alternating method proposed by Nikishkov, Park and Atluri was used after modification. In the method, as the required solution for a crack in an infinite body, the symmetric Galerkin boundary element method formulated by Li and Mear was used. And a crack was modeled as distribution of displacement discontinuities, and the governing equation was formulated as singularity-reduced integral equations.
A numerical method is presented for the scattering by the perfectly conducting cylinder with arbitrary cross sections. The relevant integral equation considered by the E-field formulation is solved by method of moments, and thereby the surface current induced as well as the radar cross section of the scatterer are numerically computed to specify the scattering nature of the scatterer. Two separate methods, one with point matching and the other Galerkin's method, are considered to make cross checks to the results obtained. Taking two half pulses suggested to expand the surface current shows savings in computation time and accurate solutions for the corners on the scatterer.

The Lagrangian grid-free numerical method, the discrete vortex method, was applied to solve the Navier-Stokes euqations. This method avoids the introduction of numerical viscosity swamping the real physical viscosity at high Reynolds number, unlike Eulerian method, e.g. finite difference and element methods. The boundary integral equation method for the potential flow solution was included to make the discrete vortex method more feasible for complex geometries. The fast adaptive multipole expansion method was incorporated to reduce the computational time from $O(N^2)$ to O(N) for the computations of vortex-vortex interactions. The test problems were air flow around one circular cylinder and two circular cylinders in tandem with various gaps. The numerical results were in excellent gareement with the experimental and other computational results. The applicabilty of the method was discussed with the indoor and the outdoor air pollution problems, especially the contaminant transport in the recirculation regions.
We present an improved Lagrangian vortex method in 2-D incompressible unsteady viscous flows, which is based on a mesh-free integral approach of the velocity-vorticity formulation. Vorticity fields are represented by discrete vortex blobs that are updated by the Lagrangian vorticity transport with the particle strength exchange scheme. Velocity fields are expressed in a form of the Helmholtz decomposition, which are calculated by a fast algorithm of the Biot-Savart integration with a smoothed kernel and by a well-established panel method. No-slip condition is enforced through viscous diffusion of vorticity from a solid body into field. The vorticity flux is determined in such a way that spurious slip velocity vanishes. Through the comparison with the existing finite volume scheme for the transient vortical flows around an impulsively started cylinder at Reynolds number Re=550, we would obtain a more accurate scheme for vortex methods in complicated flows.
A numerical method for solving the boundary-value problem related to potential flows with a free surface and an experimental work are introduced in this paper. The forced heaving motion of cylinders with arbitrary shapes in water of finite depth are Considered here. The Fredholm integral equation of the first kind is employed in determining strengths of singularities distributed on the body surface. And the results obtained by the present method for the case of a heaving circular cylinder on water of finite depth agree well with existing results of earlier investigators.
This paper discusses automation of a small-scale hydraulic shovel and its trajectory control. To move an end-effect (grinder) along a desired trajectory, the controller uses PID(proportional-integral- defferential) control and internal pressure of hydraulic cylinder. To apply PID control in the present hydraulic system, the system model is derived physically and its system parameters are obtained by actual measurement. To show the effectiveness of the PID controller and propriety of system model, the computer simulations and experiments are performed. These results of the simulations and experiments indicate that the PID trajectory control of robotic deburring by hydraulic shovel is very effective.
