  • The purpose of this study is to evaluate the capacities of repaired structural walls with different shear span ratios(1, 2, 3). Experimental tests were carried out. In this study three isolated large-scale wall specimens were made. The original wall specimens were tested until the drift reaches more than 3%. The region of the damaged specimen with the crack larger than 0.2 mm is replaced by new concrete. Also, severly distorted reinforcements were also replaced by new reinforcements. The crack smaller than 0.2 mm was cured by epoxy resin. Because of the space limitation of the laboratory the dimensions of all walls are the same. The shear-span ratio was controlled by the combination of axial and lateral force using the special test setting. All specimens were tested using the incremental quasi static cyclic load until failure occurs. Test results show that strength of repaired walls was almost equivalent to that of original walls. However, deformation capacities of repaired wall specimens are inferior to the original wall specimens.

  • An experimental study was performed to evaluate the seismic performance of beam-column connections using 600 MPa re-bars for beam flexural reinforcement. Three full scale specimens of interior beam-column connection and two specimens of exterior beam-column connection were tested under cyclic loading. The specimens were designed to satisfy the requirements of Special Moment Frame according to current design code. The structural performance of the specimens with 600 MPa re-bar were compared with that of the specimen with 400 MPa re-bars. The test results showed that bond-slip increased in the beam-column joint. However, the load-carrying capacity, deformation capacity, and energy dissipation capacity of the specimens with 600 MPa re-bar were comparable to those of the specimens with 400 MPa re-bars.

  • In this report, the test results of five reinforced concrete beam-column joint subjected to cyclic load are presented. The main purpose of the research is to investigate the influence of the steel pull-out of the beam-column joints to the shear and ductile capacity of the RC beam-column assembles. In addition, the influence of the amount of beam reinforcement to the joint shear and ductile capacity is evaluated. Test results indicate that the yield penetration of steel bar increases as the joint shear strength ratio, $V_{j1}/V_{jby}$ decreases. And the slippage of the steel bars are varied according to the region of the beam-column joints. The pull-out of the steel bars of five specimens was almost the same regardless of the joint shear strength ratio, $V_{j1}/V_{jby}$. Because it was affected by not only the yield penetration of steel bar but also the axial elongation in the plastic hinge.

  • For the experimental study of rotor steel, seven kind of specimens with different degradation levels were prepared by isothermal heat treatment at $630^{\circ}C$. Spherical indentation technique was developed to evaluate the flow properties of metallic materials in carbon steel, stainless steel, and alloys, etc. Through the spherical indentation test, differently degraded 1Cr-1Mo-0.25V steel's mechanical properties were observed and compared with conventional standard test data. The flow properties of 1Cr-1Mo-0.25V steel's were estimated by analyzing the indentation load-depth curve. To characterize the flow property, we used material yield slope and constraint factor index rather than strain-hardening exponent because the variation of strain-hardening exponent was very little and the data showed irregularly. And the constraint factor's effect was small when the material yield slope was taken into account.

  • Both resonant column (RC) and torsional shear(TS) tests were performed at small to intermediate strain levels to investigate deformational characteristics of cohesive soils. The effects of variables such as strain amplitude, loading frequency, and number of loading cycles were studied. Plasticity index was found to be an important variables in evaluating these effects. Soils tested include undisturbed silts and clays and compacted subgrade soils. At small strains below the elastic threshold, shear modulus is independent of number of loading cycles and strain amplitude. Small strain material damping exists wi th ranges be tween 1.1% and 1.7% for 75 tests. The elastic threshold strain increases as confining pressure and plasticity index increases. Above the cyclic threshold strain, the modulus of cohesive soil decreases with increasing number of cycles while damping ratio is almost independent of number of load cycles. Moduli and damping ratios of cohesive soils obtanined by RC test are higher than those from 75 test because of the frequency effect. Shear modulus of cohesive soil increases linearly as a function of the logarithm of loading frequency.

  • In this study, the seismic performance of the connections between L-shaped columns composed of concrete-filled steel tubes (L-CFST columns) and H-beams used in high-rise steel frame structures was investigated. Seven full-scale specimens were tested under quasi-static cyclic loading. The variables studied in the tests included the joint type, the axial compression ratio, the presence of concrete, the width-to-thickness ratio and the internal extension length of the side plates. The hysteretic response, strength degradation, stiffness degradation, ductility, plastic rotation capacity, energy dissipation capacity and the strain distribution were evaluated at different load cycles. The test results indicated that both the corner and exterior joint specimens failed due to local buckling and crack within the beam flange adjacent to the end of the side plates. However, the failure modes of the interior joint specimens primarily included local buckling and crack at the end plates and curved corners of the beam flange. A design method was proposed for the flexural capacity of the end plate connection in the interior joint. Good agreement was observed between the theoretical and test results of both the yield and ultimate flexural capacity of the end plate connection.

  • The characteristics of bearingless main rotor of helicopter are investigated through non-rotating tests and rotating tests. The stiffness and natural frequencies of rotor blades, flexbeam, and torque tube which are core components of baearingless rotor are measured to obtain input material properties for rotor analysis. The functional test on ground for assembly of one hub with damper, snubber, and no blade is carried out to check interfaces between components, kinematics of components, and pitch motion ranges under applied loads including centrifugal load. The 4-bladed bearingless rotor with 5.82m of rotor radius is tested on the whirl tower with rotation plane of 9.65m height. The thrust and power are measured to obtain hover performance and the frequencies and dampings of the rotor are obtained by excitation of cyclic pitch by hydraulic actuators.

  • In this study, to evaluate conservatism of various fatigue life evaluation procedures, fatigue tests were conducted using compact tension (CT) specimens with a round notch, made of A516 Gr.70 carbon steel and A240 TP304 stainless steel, under load-controlled cyclic condition. Experimental fatigue failure cycles were measured and compared with predicted fatigue lives using two different life evaluation methods; (1) Design-By-Analysis (DBA) procedure given in ASME B&PV Code, Sec. III, Div. 1, Subsec. NB-3200 and (2) structural stress-based approach provided in ASME B&PV Code, Sec. VIII, Div. 2, Part 5. To predict fatigue failure cycles, three-dimensional elastic finite element analysis was conducted. Fatigue lives were predicted by both design fatigue curve given in ASME B&PV Code, Sec. III, Div. 1, Appendices and best-fit fatigue curve suggested in NUREG/CR-6815 for the DBA procedure. Finally, fatigue lives evaluated by various methods were compared with test results, and then conservatism between each evaluation procedure was discussed.

  • Nano-structured porous carbon fiber(PCF) for the catalyst supports of the direct methanol fuel cell (DMFC) were prepared from the mesophase pitch by using the nano-MgO powders. Specific surface area of the PCFs was $8{\sim}58m^2/g$ and surface pore structures had almost meso pore diameter of 10~20 nm which were depending on the amount of MgO spheres. Aqueous reduction method was used to load 60 wt% PtRu on the prepared PCF supports. The electro-oxidation activity and single cell performance of the 60 wt% Pt-Ru catalysts were measured by cyclic voltammetry and unit cell test. The performances of these catalysts increased by 5~10% compared with one of commercial catalyst.

  • Five strengthened columns and an unstrengthened column were tested under constant axial load and cyclic lateral loads to examine the seismic performance of the unbounded strengthening procedure using wire ropes and T-plates. Main variables considered were the presence of mortar cover for strengthening steel element and anchorage method of T-plate. Test results clearly showed that T-plates having a proper anchorage contribute to transfer of applied moment as well as enhancement of ductility of reinforced concrete columns. However, T-plate not anchored fully into a column base can seldom transfer the externally applied moment, though it highly improves the ductility of column. The presence of mortar cover for strengthening steel elements is significantly effective in enhancing the initial stiffness and flexural capacity of the strengthened columns, but has an adversely effect on enhancing the ductility. The ultimate moment strength predicted from the extended section laminae method in better agreement with test results compared with predictions obtained using stress black specified in ACI 318-05.
