  • The purpose of this paper is to determine the cut off flowrate regions of the overflow valve in using L.P gas vassels. The experimental methods were employed to measure the cut off flowrate in the state of constant pressure by using the $N_2$ gas. 1) To determine the optimum cut off flowrate regions, Hose length are required 0.5 meters. 2) Cut off fowrate regions about the each pressure can be suggested as follows. A) Cut off flowrate rigions are $2.0-4.0m^3/hr$ at the pressure of the $1Kg_f/cm^2$. B) Cut off flowrate rigions are$7.0-10.0m^3/hr$ at the pressure of the $10Kg_f/cm^2$.

Effects of the Daylight Disturbance on the Growth and Yield of Cut Flower Rose 'Monet' (Rosa hybrida cv. 'Monet') (일조방해가 절화 장미의 생육 및 수량에 미치는 영향)

  • This study was carried out to analyze the effect of changes in the light environment caused by the daylight disturbance on the productivity and quality of the standard cut flower rose cultivar 'Monet'. It was artificially shaded to obstruct the sunlight and the productivity and growing characteristics of roses according to the time of daylight disturbance were investigated. The number of cut flowers per unit area (3.3m2) of the cut flower rose 'Monet' was 40 stems in the control, while in the 4-hour, 8-hour, and 12-hour treatments, it was 32, 29, and 25, respectively. As the daylight disturbance time was increased, the number of cut flowers showed a tendency to decrease. In the case of cut flower characteristics related to the quality of cut roses, all characteristics such as flower width, flower height, petal length, and petal width, decreased by 10 to 20% in the 12-hour treatment compared to the control. In addition, growth characteristics such as peduncle length, peduncle thickness, and cut flower height, which determine the marketability of cut roses, also tended to decrease as the daylight disturbance time increased. On the other hand, the number of days to flowering increased by 14.0% from 24.3 to 27.7. The overall growth characteristics were contracted and flowering was delayed as the time of daylight disturbance increased. In the results of this study, as the daylight disturbance time increased, flower size, cut flower length, and fresh weight was decreased. This is due to the decrease in the total photosynthetic amount as the daily average photosynthetic photon flux density (PPFD) was decreased, resulting in a decrease in the quality of roses. It is judged that it is because they do not receive enough carbohydrates necessary for growth and development.

Effect of Saponin Content and Antioxidant Activities of Platycodon grandiflorum Radix by Cutting Length (도라지 절단 길이에 따른 사포닌 함량 및 항산화 활성)

  • Background : Platycodon grandiflorum radix used as a therapeutic agent for lung and respiratory diseases in traditional Korean medicine. The saponin and sugar content in P. grandiflorum root is dependent on the drying temperature and method. In this study, we investigated saponins and antioxidant contents in dried P. grandiflorum roots either not cut or cut to different lengths. Methods and Results : P. grandiflorum roots were either cut to 0.5, 1.0 or 2.0 cm in length or left uncut. They were dried at $45^{\circ}C$ and the effect of antioxidant substances, antioxidant ability, and saponin content were investigated. P. grandiflorum roots rapidly dried out when cut to short lengths. The saponin contents (platycodin D, polygalacin D, and deapioplatycodin D) was highest in the uncut P. grandiflorum roots. When the cut lengths were long, the levels of polyphenolic compound increased. However, 2,2'-azinobis-3-ethylbenzo-thiazoline-6-sulfonic acid (ABTS) and 1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) radical scavenging activities were higher in the samples cut to shorter lengths. Conclusions : These results suggested that the saponin and antioxidant content of P. grandiflorum roots could be maximized by controlling the drying rate of the roots via adjustments to the root cutting length.

Development of a System to Measure Quality of Cut Flowers of Rose and Chrysanthemum Using Machine Vision (기계시각을 이용한 장미와 국화 절화의 품질 계측장치 개발)

  • Rose and chrysanthemum are the most popular flowers in Korean floriculture. Sorting flowers is a labor intensive operation in cultivation of the cut flowers and needed to be mechanized. Machine vision is one of the promising solutions for this purpose. This study was carried out to develop hardware and software of a cut flower sorting system using machine vision and to test its performance. Results of this study were summarized as following; 1. Length of the cut flower measured by the machine vision system showed a good correlation with actual length of the flower at a level of the coefficients of determination (R$^2$) of 0.9948 and 0.9993 for rose and chrysanthemum respectively and average measurement errors of the system were about 2% and 1% of the shortest length of the sample flowers. The experimental result showed that the machine vision system could be used successfully to measure length of the cut flowers. 2. Stem diameter of the cut flowers measured by the machine vision system showed a correlation with actual diameter at the coefficients of determination (R$^2$) of 0.8429 and 0.9380 for rose and chrysanthemum respectively and average measurement errors of the system were about 15% and 7.5% of the shortest diameter of the sample flowers which could be a serious source of error in grading operation. It was recommended that the error rate should be considered to set up grading conditions of each class of the cut flowers. 3. Bud maturity of 20 flowers each judged using the machine vision system showed a coincidence with the judgement by inspectors at ranges of 80%∼85% and 85%∼90% for rose and chrysanthemum respectively. Performance of the machine vision system to judge bud maturity could be improved through setting up more precise criteria to judge the maturity with more samples of the flowers. 4. Quality of flower judged by stem curvature using the machine vision system showed a coincidence with the judgement by inspectors at 90% for good and 85% for bad flowers of both rose and chrysanthemum. The levels of coincidence was considered as that the machine vision system used was an acceptable system to judge the quality of flower by stem curvature.

Effect of Triazole Compounds Treatment on Quality of Cut Flower of Dendranthema grandiflorum 'Baegkwang' (트리아졸계 화합물 처리가 절화국화의 품질에 미치는 영향)

  • The objective of this study was to investigate the effect of triazole compounds [hexaconazole ($50mg{\cdot}L^{-1}$), diniconazole ($50mg{\cdot}L^{-1}$), myclobutanil ($150mg{\cdot}L^{-1}$), difenoconazole ($50mg{\cdot}L^{-1}$), tebuconazole ($500mg{\cdot}L^{-1}$), and bitertanol ($50mg{\cdot}L^{-1}$)] on commercial quality improvement of cut flowers of Dendranthema grandiflorum 'Baegkwang' Plant height, cut flower length and internode length decreased by all triazole compounds. Plant height, cut flower length, internode length and flower neck length were shortened by treatment of $50mg{\cdot}L^{-1}$ diniconazole and $500mg{\cdot}L^{-1}$ tebuconazole. Flower neck was thickened by hexaconazole and myclobutanil. Flower diameter increased with myclobutanil and bitertanol, while it decreased with tebuconazole. Among physiological injury, open center increased with bitertanol treatment. Overall $50mg{\cdot}L^{-1}$ diniconazole and $500mg{\cdot}L^{-1}$ tebuconazole showed a possitive effect on length flower neck and increasing chlorophyll content, while decreasing plant height, cut flower length and diameter of flowers. Thus it is necessary to consider kind, concentration, and treatment times for effective control of cut flower quality.

Impact of Tumor Length on Survival for Patients with Resected Esophageal Cancer

  • Background: Tumor length in patients with esophageal cancer (EC) has recently received great attention. However, its prognostic role for EC is controversial. The purpose of our study was to characterize the prognostic value of tumor length in EC patients and offer the optimum cut-off point of tumor length by reliable statistical methods. Materials and Methods: A retrospective analysis was conducted on 71 consecutive patients with EC who underwent surgery. ROC curve analysis was used to determine the optimal cut-off point for tumor length, measured with a handheld ruler after formalin fixation. Correlations between tumor length and other factors were surveyed, and overall survival (OS) rates were compared between the two groups. Potential prognostic factors were evaluated by univariate Kaplan-Meier survival analysis. A P value less than 0.05 was considered significant. Results: There were a total of 71 patients, with a male/female divide of 43/28 and a median age of 59. Characteristics were as follows: squamous/adenocarcinoma, 65/6; median tumor length, 4 (0.9-10); cut-off point for tumor length, 4cm. Univariate analysis prognostic factors were tumor length and modality of therapy. One, three and five year OS rates were 84, 43 and 43% for tumors with ${\leq}4cm$ length, whereas the rates were 75, 9 and 0% for tumors >4 cm. There was a significant association between tumor length and age, sex, weight loss, tumor site, histology, T and N scores, differentiation, stage, modality of therapy and longitudinal margin involvement. Conclusions: Future studies for modification of the EC staging system might consider tumor length too as it is an important prognostic factor. Further assessment with larger prospective datasets and practical methods (such as endoscopy) is needed to establish an optimal cut-off point for tumor length.

  • In order to meet the industrial requirement, precision grinding with brush tool has been applied. To analyze the brush tool characteristics, several parameters including numbers of brush string installed in a single holder, depth of cut and brush length have been changed. Several data from various source were acquired using AE, acceleration and tool dynamometer during the process. Consistent results revealing certain trend with respect to each process condition were observed.

Effects of Cutting Condition on Rooting and Growth of Cut Flower in Plug Cutting of Dendranthema grandiflorum 'Iwanohakusen' (국화 '백선'의 플러그 삽목시 삽수조건이 발근 및 절화생육에 미치는 영향)

  • This study was carried out to examine the effects of cutting condition on the rooting and their subsequent growth of cut flower in plug cutting of summer-flowering chrysanthemum 'Iwanohakusen'. The more leaves were attached to the cutting, the higher shoot growth and rooting were. Shoot growth of cuttings was not affected by cutting length, but rooting was better in over 5 cm long cutting. Shoot growth was enhanced by increasing thickness of cutting, and 5.5 mm thick cutting was favored in rooting. When the many leaves were attached on the cutting, the length and weight of cut flower increased. Over 7 cm long cutting showed higher values in growth of cut flower and ray flower number. Cutting of 5.5 mm diameter showed more favorable growth of cut flower than the other treatments. Therefore, it is concluded that rooting of cutting and consecutive growth of cut flower was improved when 7 cm long and 5.5 mm diameter cutting with 4 leaves was used in plug cutting of chrysanthemum 'Iwanohakusen'.

  • In the mixed layer when the frequency approaches the cut-off frequency for the first mode of notmalmode theory, sound ceases to be trapped. Based on the data of surface sound velocities abtained during the period of 16 years in the Sea of Japan. A new cut-off frequency coefficient in the surface duct that will determine the miximum wave length for duct transimission of underwater sound has been calculated.

THE EFFECT OF MECHANICAL PROCESSING OF HAY ON THE EATING AND RUMINATION BEHAVIOUR IN SHEEP

  • An experiment was carried out to investigate the effect of change in length of hay offered on eating and rumination behaviour in sheep using three types of hay diets (L: long, M: 8.0-cm cut, S: 1.2-cm cut) and 3 Japanese Corriedale wethers, and the experiment was designed as $3{\times}3$ latine square. The time spent eating per 100 g hay was significantly shorter with long (L) hay (p < 0.05) than with chopped (M and S) hay, and therefore, the eating rate (g D.M./min.) was significantly higher in the former (p < 0.05) than in the latter. Rumination appearance (the lag time after eating) tended to be longer with long hay than with chopped hay, but not significantly (p > 0.05). Daily time spent ruminating, the actual chewing time and daily number of chews tended to be more in feeding long hay than in feeding chopped hay, but not significantly. Daily number of rumination periods was significantly more with long hay (p < 0.01) than with chopped hay. Cyclic rate tended to be longer with long hay than with chopped hay, in particular, the difference in values between long hay and 8.0-cm cut hay was significant statistically (p < 0.01). The rumination index (time spent ruminating/100 g D.M, eaten) tended to be higher with long hay than with chopped hay, and the difference in values between long hay and 1.2-cm cut hay was significant statistically (p < 0.05). Bolus time was significantly longer with long hay (p < 0.01) than that with 8.0-cm cut hay. The circadian pattern of ruminating time was not changed by the changes in length of hay eaten.
