  • The chemical compositions and pyrolysis characteristics of oil shales and source rocks distributed in the southwestern and southeastern parts of the Korean peninsular have been investigated. In order to compare the results of Korean samples with those of shales giving high oil yields, two Colorado oil shale samples and one Paris source rock samples were also investigated. Chemical compositions of the samples were analysed by means of gravimetry, CHN analysis, X-ray diffraction method, inductively coupled plasma atomic emission spectrometry and atomic absorption spectrometry. A custom made pyrolyser and a Rock-Eval system were used for the pyrolysis studies. Pyrolyses of the samples were carried out by means of a temperature controlling device to $600^{\circ}C$ at a heating rate of $5^{\circ}C/min$ with a helium flow rate of $1200m{\ell}/min$. The results of pyrolysis study indicated that Colorado shale samples belong to type I and all the other samples belong to type II.

  • We present an openfree hypertext (also known as wiki) web cluster called BioCC. BioCC is a novel wiki farm that lets researchers create hundreds of biological web sites. The web sites form an organic information network. The contents of all the sites on the BioCC wiki farm are modifiable by anonymous as well as registered users. This enables biologists with diverse backgrounds to form their own Internet bio-communities. Each community can have custom-made layouts for information, discussion, and knowledge exchange. BioCC aims to form an ever-expanding network of openfree biological knowledge databases used and maintained by biological experts, students, and general users. The philosophy behind BioCC is that the formation of biological knowledge is best achieved by open-minded individuals freely exchanging information. In the near future, the amount of genomic information will have flooded society. BioGG can be an effective and quickly updated knowledge database system. BioCC uses an opensource wiki system called Mediawiki. However, for easier editing, a modified version of Mediawiki, called Biowiki, has been applied. Unlike Mediawiki, Biowiki uses a WYSIWYG (What You See Is What You Get) text editor. BioCC is under a share-alike license called BioLicense (http://biolicense.org). The BioCC top level site is found at http://bio.cc/

  • Conventional (SRS) and fractionated (FSRS) stereotactic radiosurgery necessarily require stringent overall target point accuracy and precision. We determine three-dimensional intracranial target point deviations (TPDs) in a whole treatment procedure using magnetic resonance image (MRI)-based polymer-gel dosimetry, and suggest a technique for overall system tests. TPDs were measured using a custom-made head phantom and gel dosimetry. We calculated TPDs using a treatment planning system. Then, we compared TPDs using mid bi-plane and three-dimensional volume methods with spherical and elliptical targets to determine their inherent analysis errors; finally, we analyzed regional TPDs using the latter method. Average and maximum additive errors for ellipses were 0.62 and 0.69 mm, respectively. Total displacements were 0.92 ${\pm}$ 0.25 and 0.77 ${\pm}$ 0.15 mm for virtual SRS and FSRS, respectively. Average TPDtotal at peripheral regions was greater than that at central regions for both. Overall system accuracy was similar to that reported previously. Our technique could be used as an overall system accuracy test that considers the real radiation field shape.

  • Dynamic Voltage Restorer(DVR) which is installed between the supply and a critical load can restore voltage disturbances in distribution system. The restoration is based on injecting the same voltages as voltage sags. The ideal restoration is compensation to make the load voltages be unchanged. But voltage restoration involves real power or energy injection and the capability of energy storage is limited. So it must be considered how injection energy can be minimized and voltages can be made close to the voltages before fault. This paper describes conventional restoration techniques, which draw minimum energy from the DVR in order to correct a given voltage sag or swell. And this paper proposes a new concept of restoration technique to inject minimum energy. The proposed method is based on the definition of voltage tolerance in load side. Hence using the proposed method a particular disturbance can be corrected with less amount of storage energy compared to those of conventional methods.

  • This paper represents development of quartz crystal microbalance (QCM) and usage as a dew point sensor. The temperature of a quartz resonator was controlled precisely from $20^{\circ}C$ to $-30^{\circ}C$ with the ramping rate of $0.1^{\circ}C/s$ by using a custom-made crystal holder housing the quartz resonator associated with a thermoelectric cooler (Peltier cooler), which results in the working range from $15.2^{\circ}C$ to $-24.0^{\circ}C$ based on an accurate holder temperature compensation and temperature effect compensation process. The developed QCM dew point sensor and analysis techniques show very good sensing characteristics at measurement of moist air with the relative humidity from 10 %R.H. to 90 %R.H. generated by a divided-type humidity generator and the dew point temperatures were determined with an accuracy of less than ${\pm}0.18^{\circ}C$, which also showed good agreement with reference values in their error range.

  • A data acquisition (DAQ) system based on oscilloscope was developed and evaluated for radiation detector. The dedicated LabVIEW program that perform the oscilloscope control and the data process was developed. Triggered events for each analog channel were acquired and the output signals were subsequently digitized and recorded for offline processing. Radiation pulse generation circuit was developed to evaluate the intrinsic characteristics of DAQ system. Energy linearity and energy resolution performances were assessed by voltage-peak channels and FWHM obtained from Gaussian fit, respectively. Radiation detector consists of LYSO and GAPD array. The 16 output signals were multiplexed by the RCD networks, and they were fed into the custom-made preamplifiers. Voltage-peak channels was linearly changed as a function of input voltage and the estimated coefficient of determination ($R^2$) was 0.999. No considerable changes in voltage resolution were observed. All 16 crystals were clearly identifiable on the resulting flood image and the mean energy resolution was ~15.1%. This study demonstrated that it is feasible to develop the DAQ system based on oscilloscope and LabVIEW program for radiation detector and the proposed approach offers opportunities to build simple DAQ system in various radiation measurement field.

  • Busanjin Fortress was originally made of stone fortress for the Joseon Navy, which was located in Dongnae area in the late Joseon Dynasty. However, the Japanesque Castle of Busanjin in 1592 was built by the Japanese military during the Japanese Invasion of Korea. Since the Japanese military retreated, the Joseon Navy had renovated the fortress and had used it as a base for stationing, and it had been maintained in Busanjin Fortress until the Joseon Navy was disbanded in 1895. After the abolition of the Naval Force System, the space in Busanjin Fortress was dismantled, and the government facilities and their sites were not properly managed and repaired, eventually was sold to Japanese. As Busanjin Fortress failed to function properly, the coastal space in Busanjin became a burial ground after being reclaimed by Japanese with real estate investment in mind. Today, the traces of Busanjin Fortress have been removed by the reclamation work, and only the remains of some stone pillars remain under the name of Jaseongdae(子城臺). Thus, the old custom as the Naval base disappeared, leaving only the image of Japanesque Castle.
