The cavitating flow simulation is of practical importance for many engineering systems, such as pump, turbine, nozzle, Infector, etc. In the present work, a solver for two-phase flows has been developed and applied to simulate the cavitating flows past hydrofoils. The governing equation is the two-phase Navier-Stokes equation, comprised of the continuity equation of liquid and vapor phase. The momentum and energy equation is in the mixture phase. The solver employs an implicit, dual time, preconditioned algorithm using finite difference scheme in curvilinear coordinates. An experimental data and other numerical data were compared with the present results to validate the present solver. It is concluded that the present numerical code has successfully accounted for two-phase Navier-Stokes model of cavitation flow.
The present paper will be concerned to the investigation of the stress-strain field around the cavity that is loaded or partially loaded at the inner surface by the rotationally symmetric loading. The cavity of the spherical, cylindrical or elliptical shape is situated in a stressed elastic continuum, subjected to the gravitation field. As the contribution to the similar investigations, the paper introduces the new function of loading in the form of the infinite sine series. Besides, in this paper the solution of stresses around an oblong ellipsoid cavity, has been obtained using appropriate curvilinear elliptical coordinates. This analytical approach avoids the solutions of the same problem that lead to expressions that contain rather complex integrations. Thus the presented solutions provide the applicable and explicit expressions for stresses and strains developed in infinite series with easily determinable coefficients by the use of contemporary mathematical packages. The numerical examples are also included to confirm the convergence of the obtained solutions.
A numerical study of a two-dimensional acoustic field is carride ort for a spinning vortex pair located neat a wall to investigate the effect of the wall from the spinning quadrupole source in unsteady vortical flows. Based on the known incompressible flow field, the perturbed compressible acoustic terms derived from the Euler equations are calculated. Non-reflecting boundary conditions on the free field and the solid boundary conditions are developed for a generalized curvilinear coordinates system to investigate the effect of a curced wall. It is concluded that the sound generated by the quadrupole sources of unsteady vortical flows in the presence of a flat wall or a circular cylinder can be calculated by using the source terms of hydrodynamic flow fluctuations in both near and far acoustic fields simultaneously.
At present, the time of easy oil and gas is over. Now, the largest part of fossil fuels is concentrated in the deepest levels of tectonic structures and in the sea shelves. One of the most cumbersome operations of their extraction is the bore-hole drilling. In connection with austere tectonic and climate conditions, their drivage every so often is associated with great and diversified technological difficulties causing emergencies on frequent occasions. As a rule, they are linked with drill string accidents. A key role in prediction of these situations should play methods of theoretical modelling. For this reason, there is a growing need for development and implementation of new numerical methods for computer simulation of critical and post-critical behavior of drill strings (DSs). In this paper, the processes of non-linear deforming of a DS in cylindrical cavity of a deep bore-hole are considered. On the basis of the theory of curvilinear flexible rods, non-linear constitutive differential equations are deduced. The effects of the longitudinal non-uniform preloading, action of torque and interaction between the DS and the bore-hole surface are taken into account. Owing to the use of curvilinear coordinates in the constraining cylindrical surface and a specially chosen concomitant reference frame, it became possible to separate the desired variables and to reduce the total order of the equation system. To solve it, the method of continuation the solution by parameter and the transfer matrix technique are applied. As a result of the completed numerical analysis, the critical states of the DS loading in the cylindrical channels of inclined bore-holes are found. It is shown that the modes of the post-critical deforming of the DS are associated with its irregular spiral curving prevailing in the zone of bottom-hole-assembly. The possibility of invariant state generation during post-critical deforming is established, condition of its bifurcation is formulated. It is shown that infinite variety of loads can correspond to one geometrical configuration of the DS. They differ each from other by contact force functions.
An eddy-resolving free-surface primitive-equation model with nonlinear terrain-following coordinates is established to study the exchange of water masses among the Asian marginal seas and their adjacent waters. A curvilinear coordinate system is used to generate the horizontal grid with a variable resolution for the regional oceans from $5^{\circ}$S to $45^{\circ}$N and $100^{\circ}$E to $155^{\circ}$E. The higher resolution region has about a 10 km by 10 km grid covering the complex geometry of the coastal marginal seas, while the lower resolution region has about a 30 km by 30 km grid covering the eastern Pacific. The model is initialized by the Levitus annual climitology and forced by the monthly mean air-sea fluxes of momentum, heat, and freshwater derived from the Comprehensive Ocean-Atmosphere Data Set. High-resolution and low-viscosity are identified as the key factors for a better representation of the exchange of waters through narrow straits and passages between the marginal seas and their adjacent waters. The dynamics of the loop currents and eddies in the South China Sea and Celebes Sea are examined in detail. It has found that the anticyclonic loop and detached eddies from the Kuroshio through the Luzon Strait play an important role in transporting warm and salty water into the South China Sea, while the cyclonic circulation of the Mindanao Current in the Celebes Sea plays a role in contributing cold water to the Indonesian throughflow. The deep undercurrent of the western Pacific is shown to provide fresher water to the South China Sea and Celebes Sea. These modeling results suggest that the exchange processes via the narrow straits and passages are of fundamental importance to the maintenance of water masses for the marginal sea region.
Numerical computations were conducted to characterize the three-dimensional laminar flow through an injector orifice having an inclined angle of 30 .deg.. For this study, the incompressible Navier-Stokes equations in generalized curvilinear coordinates, using a pseudocompressibility approach for continuity equation, were solved. The computations were performed using the finite difference implicit, approximately factored scheme of Beam and Warming and multi-block grids of complete continuity at block interfaces. The multi-block computations were validated for the steady state using direct comparison of multi-block solutions with equivalent single-block ones, including 2-D 180.deg. TAD and 3-D 90.deg. pipe bend. The comparisons between the numerical solutions and the flow field measurements for a tube with sudden contraction were presented in this work for solution validation. Computational results showed the nature of complex flow fields within the inclined injector orifice, including strong pressure-driven secondary flows in the cross stream induced by the effect of streamline curvature. In addition, asymmetric secondary flows were induced in the Reynolds number range above assumed laminar flow regime considered. However, turbulence calculations and grid dependency studies are needed for more accurate computations.
Even though the relative importance of length scale of flow system allow us to simplify three dimensional flow problem to one or two dimensional representation, many systems still require three dimensional analysis. The objective of this study is to develop an efficient and accurate finite element model for analyzing and predicting three dimensional flow features in natural rivers and to offend to model spreading of pollutants and transport of sediments in the future. Firstly, three dimensional Reynolds averaged Navier-Stokes equations with the hydrostatic pressure assumption in generalized curvilinear coordinates were combined with the kinematic free-surface condition. Secondly. to simulate realistic high Reynolds number flow, the model employed the Streamline Upwind/Petrov-Galerkin(SU/PG) scheme as a weighting function for the finite element method in conjunction with an appropriate turbulence model(Smagorinsky scheme for the horizontal plain and Mellor-Yamada scheme for the vertical direction). Several tests is performed for the purpose of validation and verification of the developed model. A simple rectangular channel, 5-shaped and U-shaped channel are used for tests and comparisons are made with RMA-10 model. Runs for each case is converged stably without a oscillation and calculated water-surface deformation, longitudinal and transversal velocities, and velocity vector fields are in good agreement with the results of RMA-10 model.
Numerical study is presented for the analysis of three-dimensional incompressible turbulent flows in multiblade centrifugal fan. Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes equations with standard k - $\epsilon$ turbulence model are transformed to non-orthogonal curvilinear coordinates, and are discretized with finite volume approximations. Linear Upwind Differencing Scheme(LUDS) is used to approximate the convection terms in the governing equations. SIMPLEC algorithm is used as a velocity-pressure correction procedure. The computational area is divided into three blocks; core, impeller and scroll, which are linked by multi-block method. The flow inside of the fan is regarded as steady flow, and mathematical formula established from the cascade theory and empirical coefficient are employed to simulate tile flow through the impeller. From comparisons between the computational results and the experimental data, the validity of the mathematical formula for the blade forces was examined and good results were obtained qualitatively. Hence, we can get the flow characteristics of multi-blade centrifugal fan and it will be a corner stone of the development of the multiblade centrifugal fan.
Cavitation causes a great deal of noise, damage to components, vibrations, and a loss of efficiency in devices, such as propellers, pump impellers, nozzles, injectors, torpedoes, etc. Thus, the cavitating flow simulation is of practical importance for many engineering systems. In the present work, a two-phase flow solver based on the homogeneous mixture model has been developed. The solver employs an implicit preconditioning, dual time stepping algorithm in curvilinear coordinates. The flow characteristics around Clark-Y hydrofoil were calculated and then validated by comparing with the experimental data. The lift and drag coefficients with changes of angle of attack and cavitation number were obtained. The results show that cavity length and lift, drag coefficient increase with increasing angle of attack.
Cavitating flow simulation is of practical importance for many hydraulic engineering systems, such as pump, turbine, nozzle, injector, etc. In the present work, a solver for cavitating flow has been developed and applied to simulate the flows past axisymmetric cylinders. Governing equations are the two-phase Navier-Stokes equations, comprised of continuity equation of liquid and vapor phase. The momentum equation is in the mixture phase. The solver employed an implicit, dual time, preconditioned algorithm in curvilinear coordinates. Computations were carried out for three axisymmetric cylinders: hemispherical, ogive, and caliber-0 forebody shape. Then, the present calculations were compared with experiments and other numerical results to validate the present solver. Also, the code has shown its capability to accurately simulate the re-entrant jet phenomena and ventilated cavitation. Hence, it has been found that the present numerical code has successfully accounted for cavitating flows past axisymmetric cylinders.
