  • Generally, an autotransformer(AT) feeding system consists of double tracks, up and down, with the trolley wire and feeder wire of the up and down tracks connected in the sectioning post(SP). Consequently, load current or fault current flows on two tracks based on catenary impedance characteristics, making it difficult to estimate catenary impedance accurately. This paper presents a technique for the estimation of catenary impedance using boosting current compensation based on the current division characteristics of an AT feeding system to improve the operation performance of impedance relay. To verify the technique, we model an AT feeding system through a power analysis program (PSCAD/EMTDC) and simulate various operation and fault conditions. Through the simulation, we confirmed that the proposed technique has estimated catenary impedance with a similar degree of accuracy to the actual catenary impedance

  • Deicing system operated in high speed line is to melt frost or ice freezed in catenary line when the temperature is lower than 0 in winter. The principle of deicing system is to m디t frost or ice by Joule heat of catenary impedance. The performance of deicing is dependant of deicing current determined by the length of deicing section, deicing impedance and current division ratio of catenary line and messenger line. So, We present technique for estimating deicing current in convention line. Deicing impedance is estimated using Carson - Pollaczek, current division ratio of catenary line and messenger line is estimated using voltage drop, and deicing current is estimated using power system data of operation secion for deicing system in this technique. To verify the validity of technique, we compare the estimated current using technique of this paper with deicng current of high speed line.

  • Deicing system is to melt frost or ice freezed in catenary line when the temperature is lower than $0^{\circ}C$ in winter. The principle of deicing system is to melt frost or ice by Joule heat of catenary impedance. The performance of deicing is dependant of deicing current determined by the length of deicing section, deicing impedance and current division ratio of catenary line and messenger line. So, we present technique for estimating deicing current and process for determination of deicing section in the conventional line. Deicing impedance is estimated using Carson-Pollaczek equation, and current division ratio of catenary line and messenger line is estimated using voltage drop, and deicing current is estimated using power system data of deicing system. For the determination of the final deicing section, we verified estimated value comparing with experiment value of deicing impedance and current division ratio of catenary line and messenger line using low voltage experiment. Finally, we verified the validity of estimation technique and process using a simulated test data of real deicing system operation in the Chungju Substation, Chungbuk line.

  • The etching characteristics of magnetic thin films of permalloy and Fe-based alloys are investigated. The thin films are fabricated by rf magnetron sputtering and the substrates used are silicon and glass. Etching is done by ion beam technique and the main process parameters investigated are beam voltage, beam current and accelerating voltage. The etch rate of the magnetic films is proportional to the beam current, but it is not directly related to the accelerating voltage and beam voltage. The dependence of etch rate on the process parameters can be explained by ion current density. It is found that the ion beam etching is effective in obtaining well-developed micro-patterns on the permalloy and Fe- based magnetic thin films.

  • Nanorod films of cobalt oxide ($Co_3O_4$) have been grown by a unique oblique angle deposition (OAD) technique in an e-beam evaporator for supercapacitor electrode applications. This technique offers a non-chemical route to achieve large aspect ratio nanorods. The fabricated electrodes at OAD $80^{\circ}$ exhibited a specific capacitance of 2875 F/g. The electrochemically active surface area was $1397cm^{-2}$, estimated from the non-Faradaic capacitive current region. Peak energy and power densities obtained for $Co_3O_4$ nanorods were 57.7 Wh/Kg and 9.5 kW/kg, respectively. The $Co_3O_4$ nanorod electrode showed a good endurance of 2000 charge-discharge cycles with 62% retention. The OAD approach for fabricating supercapacitor nanostructured electrodes can be exploited for the fabrication of a broad range of metal oxide materials.

  • The object of this work is to establish an electrochemical noise(EN) measurement technique combined with a direct current potential drop(DCPD) method for monitoring of localized corrosion cracking of nickel-based alloy, and to analyze its mechanism. The electrochemical current and potential noises were measured under various conditions of applied stress to a compact tension specimen in a simulated primary water chemistry of a pressurized water reactor. The amplitude and frequency of the EN signals were evaluated in both time and frequency domains based on a shot noise theory, and then quantitatively analyzed using statistical Weibull distribution function. From the spectral analysis, the effect of the current application in DCPD was found to be effectively excluded from the EN signals generated from the localized corrosion cracking. With the aid of a microstructural analysis, the relationship between EN signals and the localized corrosion cracking mechanism was investigated by comparing the shape parameter of Weibull distribution of a mean time-to-failure.

  • This paper presents the method to provide a fast service for user in image manipulation such as zooming and panning of huge size high resolution satellite image (e.g. Giga bytes per scene). The proposed technique is based on the hierarchical structure that has 3D-Tiling in horizontal and vertical direction to provide the image service more effectively than 2D-Tiling technique in the past does. The essence of the proposed technique is to create tiles that have optimum level of horizontal as well as vertical direction on the basis of current displaying area which changes as user manipulates huge image. So this technique provides seamless service, and will be very powerful and useful for manipulation of images of huge size without data conversion.

  • This paper proposes a novel current compensation technique that can eliminate the harmonic currents included in line currents without computation of harmonic current components. A current controller with fast dynamics for an active filter is described. Harmonic currents are directly controlled without the need for sensing and computing the harmonic current of the load current, thus simplifying the control system. Current compensation is done in the time domain, allowing a fast time response. The DC voltage control loop keeps the voltage across the DC capacitor constant. High power factor control by an active filter is described. All control functions are implemented in software using a single-chip microcontroller, thus simplifying the control circuit. Any current-controlled synchronous rectifier can be used as a shunt active filter through only the simple modification of the software and the addition of current sensors. It is shown through experimental results that the proposed controller gives good performance for the shunt active filter.

  • When a current transformer (CT) is saturated, the wave-shape of the secondary current is distorted and contains points of inflection, which correspond to the start or end of each saturation period. Discontinuity in the first-difference function of the current arises at points of inflection, where the second and third differences convert into pulses that can be used to detect saturation. This paper describes the design and evaluation of a CT saturation detection technique using the third-difference function and includes the countermeasure for a spike signal. Test results clearly demonstrate that the algorithm successfully detects the start and end of each saturation period irrespective of the remanent flux and magnetization inductance in the saturated region. This paper concludes by describing the results of hardware implementation of the algorithm using a DSP.
