  • As the autoclave process progresses in a given cure cycle, residual stress in the composite product is induced by cure shrinkage of the resin. As a result, It generates the thermal deformation such as spring-in and warpage, and the inaccuracy of the final product increases. It is important to predict thermal deformation in aerospace parts which require precise fabrication. The research has been done on predicting and grasping curing process of composite material. In this study, the cure mechanism of composite materials according to the process is predicted through finite element analysis, and the effect of cure shrinkage on thermal deformation generated by the process is analyzed.

  • During the curing process of thick glass/epoxy laminates, a substantial amount of temperature lag and overshoot at the center of the laminates is usually experienced due to the large thickness and low thermal conductivity of the glass/epoxy composites. Also, it requires a longer time for full and uniform consolidation. In this work, temperature, degree of cure and consolidation of a 20mm thick unidirectional glass/epoxy laminate were investigated using an experiment and a 3-dimentional numerical analysis considering the exothermic reaction. From the experimental and numerical results, it was found that the experimentally obtained temperature profile agreed well with the numerical one and the cure cycle recommended by the prepreg manufacturer should be modified to prevent a temperature overshoot and to obtain full consolidation.

  • Bending deformation and energy absorption characteristics of aluminum-composite hybrid tube beams have been analyzed for improvement in the bending performance of aluminum space frame by using experimental tests combined with theoretical and finite element analyses. Hybrid tube beams composed of glass fabric/epoxy layer wrapped around on aluminum tube were made in autoclave with the recommended curing cycle. Basic properties of aluminum material used for initial input data of the finite element simulation and theoretical analysis were obtained from the true stress-true strain curve of specimen which had bean extracted from the Al tube beam. A modified theoretical model was developed to predict the resistance to the collapse of hybrid tube beams subjected to a bending load. Theoretical moment-rotation angle curves of hybrid tube beams were in good agreement with experimental ones, which was comparable to the results obtained from finite element simulation. Hybrid tube beams strengthened by composite layer on the whole web and flange showed an excellent bending strength and energy absorption capability.

  • The processing of phenolic composite reinforced with hybrid of PAN based/Rayon based carbon fabrics using FBG sensor and thermocouple was studied. Once the composite is cured, the reflection spectrum from the FBG sensor shifted the center wavelength with an increase in the temperature. Also, the change in the form of the reflection spectrum obtained during the cooling process of the cure cycle was caused by the thermal shrinkage. During the curing process, uniform distribution of the temperature profile was observed throughout the sample.

  • In this study, mechanical properties of carbon fabrics composite under the thermal shock cycling were evaluated. Due to the interactions between fiber and polymer matrix, it is reasonable to conclude that both thermal cycles of thermal shock result in improvement of interlaminar shear strength(ILSS) for the longer conditioning time duration. The rise in ILSS may be attributed to the improved adhesion by cryogenic compressive stress and also by the post-curing strengthening effect. However, the flexural and tensile strength were decreased with increasing conditioning time of thermal cycle.

  • Based on eco-friendly advantages and the enhanced development in the chemical and physical characteristics, liquid silicone rubber (LSR) is widely used in producing precision parts in the automotive, medical, electronics, aeronautical and many other industries. In the current work, a thermoplastic-thermoset multi component injection molding (MCM) was developed for a waterproof automotive connector housing using PBT and LSR resins. Measurements of the rheological characteristics of PBT and LSR were made to improve the reliability of the numerical analysis for the multi component injection process. With the measured viscosity, pvT and curing data, numerical analysis of the multi cycle injection molding was conducted using simulation software (Sigma V5.0).

  • For the fabrication of the Si negative electrode in Li-ion batteries (LIBs) containing the cross-linking polymer binder, in this work, the urethane acrylate (UA) oligomer was synthesized via a simple synthetic process. The cross-linked poly(urethane acrylate) (CPUA)/carbone black (CB)/Si composite (CPUA/CB/Si composite) was fabricated through reactions between their reactive vinyl segments in the UA oligomer. Interestingly, the CPUA/CB/Si composite showed better cycle performance than the poly(vinylidene fluoride) (PVdF)/CB/Si composite (PVdF/CB/Si composite) and the polyurethane (PU)/CB/Si composite (PU/CB/Si composite). The CPUA/CB/Si composite had the best lithiation of about $2586mAh\;g^{-1}$. The UA oligomer showed a good compatibility with the electrode materials and current collector after and before a curing process.

  • Carbon fiber reinforced polymer (CFRP) composites consist of carbon fibers in a polymer matrix. Recently, CFRP composites having high thermal stability and low outgassing are finding their use in high performance materials for aerospace and electronics applications under high temperature and high vacuum conditions. Cyanate ester resin is one of the most suitable matrix resins for this purpose. In this study, proper combination of cyanate ester and catalyst, curing behavior, and cure cycle were determined by chemorheology. Optimum condition was found to be catalyst content of 100 ppm and curing temperature of $150^{\circ}C$. Thermal stability and outgassing of cured resin composition were analyzed and the results showed thermal decomposition temperature of $385^{\circ}C$ and total mass loss of 0.29%. The CFRP prepregs and subsequent composites were fabricated by predetermined resin composition and the cure condition. Tensile moduli of the composites were compared with theoretical models and the results were very consistent.

  • The aim of this research was to study the effect of intermittent polymerization on marginal adaptation by comparing the marginal adaptation of intermittently polymerized composite to that of continuously polymerized composite. The materials used for this study were Pyramid (Bisco Inc., Schaumburg, U.S.A.) and Heliomolar (Ivoclar Vivadent, Liechtenstein) . The experiment was carried out in class II MOD cavities prepared in 48 extracted human maxillary premolars. The samples were divided into 4 groups by light curing method: group 1- continuous curing (60s light on with no light off), group 2-intermittent curing (cycles of 3s with 2s light on & 1s light off for 90s); group 3- intermittent curing (cycles of 2s with 1s light on & 1s light off for 120s); group 4- intermittent curing (cycles of 3s with 1s light on & 2s light off for 180s). Consequently the total amount of light energy radiated was same in all the groups. Each specimen went through thermo-mechanical loading (TML) which consisted of mechanical loading (720,000 cycles, 5.0 kg) with a speed of 120 rpm for 100hours and thermocycling (6000 thermocycles of alternating water of $50^{\circ}C$ and $55^{\circ}C$). The continuous margin (CM) (%) of the total margin and regional margins, occlusal enamel (OE), vertical enamel (VE), and cervical enamel (CE) was measured before and after TML under a $\times200$ digital light microscope. Three-way ANOVA and Duncan's Multiple Range Test was performed at 95% level of confidence to test the effect of 3 variables on CM (%) of the total margin: light curing conditions, composite materials and effect of TML. In each group, One-way ANOVA and Duncan's Multiple Range Test was additionally performed to compare CM (%) of regions (OE, VE CE). The results indicated that all the three variables were statistically significant (p < 0.05). Before TML, in groups using Pyramid, groups 3 and 4 showed higher CM (%) than groups 1 and 2, and in groups using Heliomolar. groups 3 and 4 showed higher CM (%) than group 1 (p < 0.05). After TML, in both Pyramid and Heliomo)ar groups, group 3 showed higher CM (%) than group 1 (p < 0.05) CM (%) of the regions are significantly different in each group (p < 0.05). Before TML, no statistical difference was found between groups within the VE and CE region. In the OE region, group 4 of Pyramid showed higher CM (%) than group 2, and groups 2 and 4 of Heliomolar showed higher CM (%) than group 1 (p < 0.05). After TML, no statistical difference was found among groups within the VE and CE region. In the OE region, group 3 of Pyramid showed higher CM (%) than groups 1 and 2, and groups 2,3 and 4 of Heliomolar showed higher CM (%) than group 1 (p < 0.05). It was concluded that intermittent polymerization may be effective in reducing marginal gap formation.
