The purpose of this study is to explore cultural factors that affect food consumption patterns by comparing them for college students in Korea and China. This study includes seeking pleasure, seeking satiety, and seeking well-being. Food consumption patterns, social responsibility, the value of life, faith in God, traditional moral fundamentalism and cultural taste are the cultural factors. To achieve the purpose, SPSS Win.(12.0) and LISREL(8.72) are applied. From the results of this study, first, among food consumption patterns, Koreans and Chinese both are found to put a higher value on seeking pleasure than other consumption patterns, and Chinese are found to put a higher value on seeking satiety. Second, for Koreans, the value of traditional moral fundamentalism and social responsibility are found to significantly influence seeking satiety and seeking well-being. If they had a higher degree of traditional moral fundamentalism, they would like to seek more satiety from food. And if they had a higher degree of social responsibility, they would like to seek more well-being from food. However, for Chinese, seeking pleasure is found to be significantly influenced by social responsibility and a faith in God, and seeking satiety is found to be significantly influenced by social responsibility and the value of a good life while seeking well-being is found to be significantly influenced by social responsibility and a faith in God. Compared with Koreans, cultural factors such as social responsibility, a faith in God, the value of a good life for the Chinese might influence significantly all three types of food consumption patterns. Thus, this study might provide more useful information about finding cultural differences of values and food consumption patterns between Koreans and Chinese.

The present study purposed to examine the possibility of developing historicity inherent in places into tourism resources from the view that the history and location of historical cities have the nature of cultural contents. Previous researches on tourism have been focused on tourist facilities, the development of tourist attractions, economic effects, cultural policies, etc. However, the present study makes a cultural approach to historical cities to explore the meaning of places formed through history and the historicity of places, assuming that the temporal and spatial characteristics of Hanseong-bu can be developed into tourism resources. Major places of Hanseong-bu are classified according to their functions and cultural meanings, and these factors are associated with the geographical structure of the area. By landform and cultural characteristics during the Chosun Dynasty, Hanseong-bu is divided into the central part, the boundary area, and the outskirts. In addition, different elements, which can be developed into tourism resources, are found according to the landscape of Hanseong-bu, the character as a dynastic city, the environs inside the wall, and differences among localities reflecting pre-modem lifestyle.
Even though Paule Marshall and Ishmael Reed have differences of gender, generation, and literary techniques, they share common points in dealing with cultural conflicts and racial discrimination in the United States as Afro-American Writers. As black minority writers, Marshall and Reed write out of a perspective of forced immigrant/fragmentary native consciousness. The purpose of this paper is to investigate the protagonist's reaction to racial prejudice, different cultures and their attempts to reconcile and to coexist with other races and their culture in these writers' representative works. Marshall's uniqueness as a contemporary black female artist stems from her ability to write from the three levels, that is, African American and Caribbean black. So, Marshall's Brown Girl, Brownstones represents an attempt to identify, analyze, and resolve the conflict between cultural loss/displacement and cultural domination/hegemony. Reed's Japanes by Spring offers a blistering attack upon the various cultural and racial factions of the academy and the bankrupt value systems in America. Reed's depiction of Jack London College's existing racial problems-later compounded by the cultural dilemmas that accompany the Japanese occupation of the institution-reveals his interest in highlighting the ways in which any monoculturalist ideology ultimately results in racist and culturally exclusive policies. Marshall's and Reed's novels provide opportunities for reader to explore various manifestations of intercultual and interethnic dynamics. They present the possibility of reconciliation and coexistence between different race and ethnic cultures through asserting a cultural hybridity and multiculturalism.

As a form of convergence studies, many studies on electronic cultural atlas have been performed. In this paper, our objective is to design an electronic cultural atlas for utilizing photo contents based on display and sharing effect. This is one of the ways to effectively use various photo contents. Through electronic cultural atlas, photo contents are recognized as an object that contains a lot of information. To do this, we design an electronic cultural atlas for utilizing photo contents, and investigate the utilization differences through comparison with existing systems. In detail, we examine the limits of the traditional photo exhibition method, and research on usability of users when an electronic cultural atlas was used to exhibit and share the photos contents efficiently.
This study investigated differences in beliefs about English learning of 286 EFL college students and 52 English teachers in Korea. Data was collected using Horwitz's Beliefs About Language Learning Inventory and compared between students and teachers in beliefs. To address the research questions, the data were analyzed through descriptive statistics including frequencies, factor analysis, MANOVA, ANOVA, t-test, and reliability coefficients. The results showed four factors in student beliefs: Difficulty of learning English, nature of learning English, importance of correctness in learning English, and motivation and perceived importance of learning English. Clear differences were found in students and teachers' beliefs in English learning aptitude and importance of translation, error correction, and grammar rules. A few belief differences were also identified between Koreans and native-speaking English teachers related to the importance of vocabulary learning, pronunciation, and cultural knowledge. The findings of the study indicated that background variables such as gender and major field of study have an effect on student beliefs about L2 learning. The present study also provided pedagogical considerations to reduce mismatch between students and teachers beliefs and to improve the L2 planning and instruction.
As the divorce rates in Korea have increased dramatically in recent years, it has been assumed that the attitudes towards divorce changed as a consequence. It has been proposed that people have become more accepting of marital dissolution as an alternative to unhappy marriage. The Purpose of this study is to empirically examine the assumption and to explore whether there is a rural-urban differences in the attitudes towards divorce. The data were gathered from 716 respondents who reside in Seoul and 593 respondents who reside in rural areas, using the structured questionnaire. The data analysis revealed that there exists significant rural-urban differences in the attitudes towards divorce in some aspects, suggesting the gaps in the cultural changes. Yet, rural-urban residents seems to share the attitude that one should not sacrifice personal happiness to maintain an unhappy marriage for the shake of obligation and traditional family norm.
The purpose of this study was to explore the similarities and differences of elements of successful aging in Western and Korean society using a background of time and dominant values of each society. Content analysis of concepts and components of 'successful aging' was performed based on 12 Korean articles and 23 Western articles. The major findings were: (1) The studies of successful aging accomplished since 2001 and the studies that explore the elements of successful aging perceived by the elderly mentioned diverse elements as essential to successful aging. (2) There were both common and distinct components of successful aging in Western and Korean society. Some of the essential components for successful aging were commonly accepted, but others were varied and unique, reflecting the period of experience and cultural values. These results could be used to better understand unique successful aging of the Korean elderly, as well as to establish a basis of intervention that meets the specific demands of this population.
The purpose of this study is to examine the factors that are associated with a child's development within a multi-cultural family, taking into account the factors that influence the child's language ability and their play interactions with their mothers. First, there was no significant difference in the children's language ability based on the child's gender, or based on the language in which the mother communicated with her children. However there were significant differences depending on the children's age, the mother's native country, and the period of time the mother had lived in Korea. Second, there was no significant difference in the child-mother play interaction based on the children's age, gender, the mother's native country, the period of time the mother has lived in Korea, or the language in which the mother communicated with her children. However, the boys showed a more hostile attitude toward their mothers, in comparison to the girls. In conclusion, it can be said that there is an urgent need for comprehensive social support services and policies for the overall development of multi-cultural children, especially through programs for children and mothers.

This study investigated the difference of clothing-behavior for the same occasions in terms of a cross-cultural context. It analyzed clothing items worn by TED speakers via video at TED.com in the US, UK, France, Japan, and South Korea from October to December 2012. An analysis on the 233 videos showed considerable differences among countries. American speakers wore casual items on the top and formal wear on the bottom. Most British speakers wore the same styles on the top and the bottom outfits such as 'formal-top & formal-bottom' or 'casual-top & casual-bottom'. French speakers chose mix and match styles. Japanese and Koreans selected the same styles on the top and the bottom outfits such as 'formal-top & formal-bottom' or 'casual-top & casual-bottom'. In particular, Japanese speakers selected various casual items more than other countries' speakers. Korean senior speakers had a preference to wear more formal clothing and young people liked more casual attachments. This study found that clothing attachments differed by cultural context and generation.
