  • There have been some problems of high labor. low productivity in the existing systems of bonsai cultivation. This study was conducted to cultivate a large quantity of hig-quality bonsai through the development of bottom irrigation system and management method. Bonsai placed on the FRP bed were grown very well by bottom irrigation system compared with direct watering and sprinkler system. It was concluded that bottom irrigation system was possible to reduce considerable manual labor and produce mass production of high-quality bonsai within shorter periods. This research was finally found that the growth was significantly better and earlier production was certain in the vinyl house, had another advantage which could cultivate less cold-resistant species and therefore broadened a range of species selection for market supply. Cultivation techniques by the use of vinyl house and bottom irrigation system developed was quite effective for early production of bonsai as well as for high productive and value added. This project developed a new practical techniques and systems which can make mass and early production of bonsai with high quality through input of less labor. Interest in bonsai is now expanding in landscape horticulture and other fields concerned, and bonsai export of our country is also increasing. • Microalgae are attracting attention as a resource for the production of biofuels, food nutrients, biochemicals, and bioplastics. Among a wide range of sources of the biomass, microalgae have been highlighted due to relatively easy cultivation, ability to eliminate carbon dioxide, and low culturing cost. Despite the great potential of microalgal biomass as a biological material, the complexity and relatively expensive downstream processes have inhibited the commercial use of microalgae. In this study, we reviewed recent techniques for microalgal drying for the production of microalgal based products. As drying processes comprise the largest portion of microalgae processing cost, an efficient drying technique is key to the utilization of microalgal biomass.

  • Chlorella are source of valuable compounds as lipids, proteins, carbohydrates, bioactive compounds. To continuous obtain the high-value materials of Chlorella protothecoides, we performed continuous cultivation after applying milking techniques to C. protothecoides grown with culture for 7 days in optical panel bioreactor (OPBR) system. Fatty acid and lutein in extracts from pre- and post-milking of C. protothecoides were analyzed using gas chromatography and high performance liquid chromatography, respectively. C. protothecoides were rich in unsaturated fatty acids with a high content of oleic acid(C18:1), which is suitable as a biofuel feedstock. The fatty acid content in pre- and post-milking of C. protothecoides was decreased from 126.424mg/g d.w. to 119.341mg/g d.w, and the lutein content decreased from 0.258mg/g d.w. to 0.178mg/g d.w. The results of this study demonstrate the feasibility of milking C. protothecoides for production of lipids for biofuels production. It was confirmed that microalgae can continuously obtain lutein present in a trace amount through a continuous culture from milking.

  • The optimal conditions for mycelial growth of Phellinus linteus ATCC 26710 were determined to be a log length of 20 cm, temperature of $30^{\circ}C$ and pH of 6.0. Mycelial growth was excellent on the mushroom complete medium, and was optimal when sucrose, man nose and glucose were supplied as carbon sources. Potassium nitrate and sodium nitrate as nitrogen sources supported good mycelial growth. To evaluate P. linteus mycelial colonization on logs, sterilized short log inoculation, drilling inoculation and log-end sandwich inoculation techniques were used. Only sterilized short log inoculation produced good mycelial colonization. Initial mycelial growth and full mycelial colonization were best on 20 cm logs having 42% moisture content. The initial mycelial growth of P. linteus was accelerated over 12hr of sterilization. Basidiocarp formation was optimal using a burying method of logs after $5{\sim}6$ months, and fruiting body formation was superior in cultivation house conditions of $31{\sim}35^{\circ}C$ and in excess of 96% relative humidity.

  • This is a brief review and discussion for present status and prospects of quality evaluation in medicinal plants as oriental medicine materials (OMM). Quality in medicinal plants could be defined as the combination of origin, external appearance, effectiveness and safety, and be evaluated by plant taxonomic, morphological, physiochemical and biological methods. For high-quality improvement and standardization of OMM, medicinal plants should be produced through using proper species or good variety and standard cultivation method in suitable cultivation area. Standardizing of quality means to meet with minimum qualifying criteria of OMM in the market while improving of quality to be over standard quality of medicinal piano in production. For making new high quality and standardized products, we need to keep standard field plants, standard OMM, standard plant specimen, and standard compounds. Researchers and administration have to study and propose the quality factors and their evaluating techniques and criteria, so high-quality and standardized produce of medicinal plane could be produced and distributed under the control of the relevant regulations, and would be contributed to increasing of national health.

  • In Korea, rural groundwater development faces new challenge, which have not been experienced so far. The problem is a groundwater depletion by the water curtain cultivation (WCC) during winter season. This study investigates the groundwater depletion using three-dimensional finite difference groundwater flow program, MODFLOW to verify the water budget of the shallow aquifer of Cheongweon area. Interdisciplinary research, which has become a worldwide trend, has been adopted in studying groundwater modeling in field scale. In particular, the method of groundwater recharge estimation adopted precise modeling techniques, SWAT to groundwater flow modeling. Based on qualified field data, the model calibrated and validated its reliability. The objective of this study is to simulate various stream-aquifer interactions according to groundwater pumping with artificial boundaries, such as weirs and drainage system. We also analyzed a seasonal variation of cumulative water budget of the site to quantify the groundwater depletion and recovery in the pumping field.
