A study on grinding characteristics of CBN single abrasive grain (CBN 단입자의 연삭특성에 관한 연구)

  • Cubic boron nitride (CBN) is known the second hardest material followed diamond and was provided industry as an abrasive grain in the late 1960's. Since the introduction of CBN, a large amount of research has been carried out to determine the best application condition for grinding operation. Despite the advantages in its characteristics, CBN has not yet gained full acceptance as more excellent abrasive grain than traditional one. The reason for this state is that the surface roughness ground by CBN is worse than by traditional one and dressing and truing is very difficult. This led user's resistance to the use of CBN as an abrasive grain. Present study is to investigate the cause of lower surface roughness ground by CBN single crystal abrasive grain comparing with traditional one.

Micro-cutting of Cemented Carbides with SEM (초경합금재의 전자현미경(SEM)내 마이크로 절삭)

  • This paper investigates the micro-cutting of cemented carbides using PCD (polycrystalline diamond) and PCBN (polycrystalline cubic boron nitride) cutting tools are performed with SEM direct observation method. The purpose of this study is to make clear the cutting mechanism of cemented carbides and the fracture of WC particles at the plastic deformation zone in orthogonal micro-cutting. And also to achieve systematic understanding, the effect of machining parameter on chip formation and machined surface was studied, including cutting speed, depth of cut and various tool rake angle. Summary of the results are shown below. (1) Three type of chip formation process have been proposed by the results of the direct observation in orthogonal micro-cutting of cemented carbide materials. (2) From the whole observation of chip formation, primary WC particles are crushed and/or fine grained in the shearing deformation zone. A part of them are observed to collide directly with a cutting edge of tool by following the micro-cutting. (3) Surface finish, surface morphology and surface integrity is good to obtain by cutting with PCD cutting tool compared with PCBN. (4) The machined surface has the best quality near the low cutting speed of 10${\mu}m$/sec with a cutting depth of 10 ${\mu}m$ using 0$^\circ$ rake angle and 3$^\circ$ flank angle in this condition, but it was found that excessively low speed, for example the extent of 1 ${\mu}m$/sec, is not good enough to select for various reason.

The Brazing Characters of cBN Grit with Ag-based Filler Alloys (cBN 지립과 Ag계 필러합금에서의 브레이징 특성)

  • 철계 피삭재 가공 시 적용되는 cBN(cubic Boron-Nitride)의 경우 열적/구조적 안정성으로 인해 융착 시 계면에서 화학적 결합이 어려워, 지립이 단일층으로 형성되어야 하는 융착 공구의 경우 적용되질 못하고 있다. 이러한 문제를 해결하기 위해 세라믹과의 젖음성이 우수한 Ti 성분이 포함된 67Ag+28Cu+5Ti(wt.%) 조성의 합금분말을 이용하여 cBN을 접합을 하였으며, 이때 융착조건은 진공 분위기($6{\times}10^{-6}$Torr), $900^{\circ}C$ 온도에서 5분간 유지하여 융착을 실시하였다. 본 연구의 주목적은 Ti 합금화 된 Ag계 합금분말 및 cBN의 융착 계면에서의 융착 계면거동해석을 통한 건전한 접합공정을 찾는데 있다. 이에 온도 $900^{\circ}C$, 유지시간 5분에서 건전한 융착층을 형성함을 알 수 있었다. 또한 결합력 측정기를 이용하여 결합력을 측정한 결과 diamond와 융착하였을 때가 123N, cBN을 융착하였을 때 107N으로써, cBN 융착이 diamond 융착의 87%정도의 결합력을 보임을 알 수 있었다. 한편 cBN과 Ag-Cu-Ti계 브레이징 필러의 계면에서의 미세조직 및 화학반응의 메커니즘은 SEM, EDS를 이용하여 분석하였다.

  • BN(Boron Nitride)은 온도와 압력 조건에 따라 안정한 상이 sp3 결합인 cubic 구조의 BN(cBN)과 sp2 결합인 hexagonal 구조의 BN(hBN or tBN)으로 나뉘는데, 이 중 cBN은 우수한 기계적, 물리적, 화학적 특성으로 인해 박막 분야에서 매우 높은 응용가능성을 지니고 있다. 하지만 cBN 박막의 합성과정에서의 필수적인 요소인 높은 압축잔류응력은 cBN을 응용분야에 적용하는데 있어 한계점으로 계속 남아 있었다. 그동안 이러한 잔류응력을 감소시키기 위해 열처리, 이온 주입, 제 3의 물질 첨가 등 다양한 관점에서 접근한 연구들이 진행되어 왔다. 본 연구에서는 cBN 합성과정에서 잔류응력을 감소시키기 위한 방법으로 수소를 첨가하였고, 그에 따른 잔류응력의 변화를 분석하고, 그 과정에서 잔류응력의 형성에 수소가 어떤 역할을 하는지 규명하고자 하였다. cBN 박막은 hBN을 target으로한 unbalanced magnetron sputtering를 사용하여, 실리콘 wafer 위에 합성하였다. 증착압력은 1.3mTorr로, 수소의 첨가량을 증가시키며 잔류응력과 cBN fraction을 관찰하였다. cBN fraction은 FTIR로 분석하였고, 잔류응력은 실리콘 strip의 in-situ 곡률측정법으로 계산하였다. cBN 박막의 조성과 구조 분석, 수소의 역할 규명을 위해 RBS 및 HRTEM을 이용하였다.

Deposition of c-BN Films on Tungsten Carbide Insert Tool by Microwave Plasma Enhanced Chemical Vapor Deposition(MPECVD) (MPECVD법에 의한 초경인서트 공구의 c-BN 박막 증착)

  • Cubic boron nitride(c-BN) films were deposited on tungsten carbide insert tool by microwave plasma enhanced chemical vapor deposition(MPECVD) from a gas mixture of triethyl borate$(B(C_2H_5O)_3)$, ammonia $(NH_3)$, hydrogen$(H_2)$ and argon(Ar). The qualities of deposited thin film were investigated by x-ray diffrac-tion(XRD), field emission scanning electron microscopy(FE-SEM) and micro Raman spectroscope. The surface morphologies of the synthesised BN as well as crystallinity appear to be highly dependent on the flow rate of $B(C_2H_5O)_3$ and $(NH_3)$ gases. The deposited film had more crystallized phases with 5 scem of $B(C_2H_5O)_3$ and $(NH_3)$ gases than with 2 sccm, and the phase was identified as c-BN by micro Raman spectroscope and XRD. The adhesion strength were also increased with increasing flow rates of $B(C_2H_5O)_3$ and $(NH_3)$ gases.

Development of The Magnetic Abrasive Using Ba-Ferrite and GC, CBN (Ba-Ferrite와 GC, CBN을 이용한 자기 연마재 개발)

  • The magnetic polishing is the useful method to finish some machinery fabrications by using magnetic power. This method is one of the precision polishing techniques and has an aim for clean technology in the transportation of the pure gas in the clean pipes. The magnetic abrasive polishing method is not so common in the field of machine that it is not known to widely. There are only few researchers in this field because of non-effectiveness of magnetic abrasive. Therefore, in this paper deals with development of the magnetic abrasive using Ba-Ferrite. In this development, abrasive grain GC and CBN has been made by using the resin bond fabricated at low temperature. And magnetic abrasive powder was fabricated from the Ba-Ferrite which was crushed into 200 mesh. The XRD analysis result shows that only GC, CBN and Ba-Ferrite crystal peaks were detected, explaining that resin bond was not any more to contribute chemical reaction. From SEM analysis, we found that GC, CBN abrasive and Ba-Ferrite were strongly bonding with each other.

Characterization of Elliptical Dimple Fabricated with Dual Frequency Vibration Assisted Machining (이중 주파수 지원 절삭으로 가공된 타원형 딤플의 특성)

  • Surface texturing is a promising route to reduce the friction forces between two surfaces in sliding contact. To this end, the fabrication of micro dimples is one of the most widely used surface texturing methods. According to published results, textured surfaces with elliptical micro dimples offer the best friction performance. Therefore, we fabricated elliptical micro dimples on carbon steel (SM45C) by using dual frequency vibration assisted machining. High and low frequencies of 16.3 kHz and 230 Hz were applied to the 3D resonant elliptical vibrator. The 3D resonant elliptical vibrator with a triangular cubic boron nitride insert was assembled on a computer numerically controlled turning lathe. Oval micro dimples of various profiles were manufactured on carbon steel. In terms of the profile of the elliptical micro dimples, the experimental results indicated that the average micro dimple width and depth were 112 ㎛ and 7.7 ㎛. These dimensions are closely related to the cutting conditions and can be easily controlled.

  • Quartz (SiO2) has high abrasion and heat resistances and excellent chemical and mechanical properties; therefore, it is used in various industries, such as machinery, chemistry, optics, and medicine. Quartz is a high-hardness and brittle material and is classified as the topmost difficult-to-cut material, which is because of the cracking or chipping at the edge during processing. Corner wear, such as cracks and chippings that occur during cutting, is a major cause for the deterioration in the machining quality. Therefore, many researchers are investigating various techniques to process quartz effectively. However, owing to the mechanical properties of quartz, most studies have been conducted on grinding, micromachining, and microdrilling. Few studies have been conducted on quartz processing. The purpose of this study was to analyze the machining characteristics according to the machining factors during the slot machining of quartz using a cubic boron nitride (CBN) tool and to select the optimal machining conditions using the Taguchi method. The machining experiment was performed considering three process variables: the spindle speed, feed rate, and depth of cut. The cutting force and surface roughness were analyzed according to the processing conditions.

A study on the surface roughness of STD 11 material according to the helix angle of ball endmill (볼 엔드밀의 헬릭스 각도에 따른 STD 11 소재의 표면 거칠기에 관한 연구)

  • The ball end mill is a type of cutting tool that is widely used to process complex mold shapes including aspheric surfaces. Unlike the flat end mill in which the cutting edge is formed on the cylindrical handle, the cutting edge is formed from the cylindrical handle to the hemispherical shape, which is advantageous for processing curved shapes. However, since the cutting speed continuously changes during machining due to the helix angle of the cutting edge or the machining inclination angle, it is difficult to obtain a precise machined surface. Therefore, in this paper, machining was performed while changing the helix angle of the ball end mill and the angle of the machining slope under the same cutting conditions for STD 11 material, which is widely used as a mold material. Through this, the effect of the two variables on the roughness of the machined surface was analyzed. As a result, if the helix angle was 0 degrees, it showed the best surface roughness of Ra. 0.16 ㎛. When the helix angle was 20 degrees, the best surface roughness of Ra. 0.18 ㎛ was occurred.

An Evaluation of Skiving Cutting Characteristics of TiCN PACVD Coating Caribide Hob (TiCN PACVD코팅 초경호브의 Skiving절삭특성 평가)

  • SCM420 steel tempered after performing gear hove PACVD carbide coating on the surface after the cutting surface hardness was high. Difficult-to-cut, without coating is classified as mild as large, including materials like mild, high strength that improves tool life and productivity have limited availability. Drive to improve it in the TiCN-coated carbide call for war to the finish coating on cutting a hob skiving good workability, tool wear less, 2.5-fold increase in tool life results were obtained. Experiments using CNC Skiving hobbing machine with wet cutting conditions, cutting speed and feed rate to apply a variety of the tool wear and surface roughness data were obtained. Results from condition 2 (V = 200m/min F = 0.7mm/rev) cutting speed feed mark the cutting surface microstructure and surface roughness Rmax $4.7{\mu}m$(Ra $1.19{\mu}m$) of the data was obtained.
