  • In this study, a different UV (ultra-violet) ray absorption system is presented in which butyl methoxydiben-zoylmethane (BMDM, a model UV-A absorbent, 320$\~$400 nm) is stabilized in phase-controlled poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) microspheres. The photochemistry of BMDM in the microspheres was investigated considering its phase characteristics therein. The analysis of a differential scanning calorimeter and X-ray diffractometer showed that the BMDM in the microspheres was present with a non-crystalline state. The phase control of BMDM in the polymer microsphere has an excellent ability to protect UV-A with maintaining its photo- and thermal stability. The results obtained in this study illustrate well that the phase control of the UV absorbents in the polymer microspheres is another key factor that de-termines its photochemistry and photostability in the final formulations.

  • This study is aimed at preparing and evaluating the plasma resistance of YAS (Y2O3-Al2O3-SiO2) coating layer with crystalline YAG phase contents. For this purpose, YAS frits with controlled phase contents are prepared and melt-coated on sintered Al2O3 ceramics. Then, the results of phase analysis of crystalline YAS coating layer are compared to that of YAS frits, and discussed with regard to the plasma resistance of the YAS coating layer. The phase contents of the YAS frit change in a manner different from that of the prepared YAS coating layer, presumably owing to the composition change of YAS frit during the melt-coating process. The plasma resistance of the YAS coating layer is shown to increase with the YAG phase contents in the coating layer. Comparing the weight loss of YAS coating layer with those of commercial Y2O3, Al2O3, and quartz ceramics, the plasma resistance of the prepared YAS coating layer is 8 times higher than that of quartz and 3 times higher than that of Al2O3; this layer shows 70 % of the resistance of Y2O3.

  • Raman and fluorescence spectroscopies were employed to study the coil effects on the intermolecular structure of a rod-coil liquid crystalline (LC) oligomer, the esterification products of ethyl 4-[4'-oxy-4-biphenylcarbonyloxy]- 4'-biphenylcarboxylate with poly(propylene)oxides (PPO) (DP=12) and poly(ethylene oxide)s (PEO) (DP=12). Three different vibrational modes (carbonyl, aromatic C-H, and aromatic C=C) obtained from the Raman experiment at variable temperature indicate that PPO and PEO coils induce the hydrogen bonding in a different manner. Further information about the micro-environment around the mesogenic unit obtained by fluorescence excitation spectra of P12-4 (LC with PPO coil) and 12-4 (LC with PEO coil) suggests that the mesogenic unit of P12-4 is quite different from that of 12-4 in intermolecular structure. This study supports the results obtained only from Raman spectroscopy, providing more accurate information about the intermolecular structural changes of liquid crystalline polymers at a molecular level during the phase transitions.

  • A new hydroxylpropyl chitosan (HPCTO) capable of forming both thermotropic and lyotropic liquid crystalline phases was synthesized by reaction of alkali chitosan with propylene oxide and its solid films cross-linked with glyoxal were prepared by casting the liquid crystalline solution in methanol. The thermal and swelling properties of the cross-linked films were investigated. The films displayed fingerprint patterns characteristic of cholesteric liquid-crystalline phase, and their pitches increased with increasing temperature and cross-linker concentration. The cross-linked samples exhibited an anisotropic swelling in both water and methanol, suggesting that the two-dimensional cross-linking preferentially performs between HPCTO molecules. The degree of anisotropy highly depended on the solvent, but hardly on the cross-linker concentration investigated.

  • We introduce to prepare liquid crystalline emulsion composed of cetearyl alcohol, cetyl palmitate, sorbitan palmitate, sorbitan olivate, ceramide and so on which can enforce interface between oil-based particle and water phase. In terms of structural analysis, the stability of the liquid crystalline emulsion including ceramide, which is immisible ingredient, at high temperature was proved by polarized microscope, cryo-SEM, small-angle x-ray scattering, in addition to viscometer and static light scattering by physical analysis.

  • The liquid crystalline properties of a series of main chain liquid crystalline polymers and four series compounds consisting of aromatic type Schiff base mesogenic units and polymethylene flexible spacers were studied. The thermal and liquid crystalline properties were investigated by differential scanning calorimetry and on the hot stage of a polarizing microscope. The nature of the liquid crystalline phase of the polymers and compounds depended greatly on the length of the central polymethylene spacer and on the terminal alkoxy groups. Polymers I and Series III exhibited an even-odd effect in melting and isotropization temperatures but Series II and Series IV exhibited an even-odd effect in isotropization temperatures. They formed nematic and smectic mesophases in melts as judged by their optical textures observed through a polarizing microscope.

  • A high Tc superconducting with a nominal composition of $Bi_2Sr_2Ca_2Cu_3O_y$ was prepared by the citarte method. The solid precursor produced by the dehydration of the gel at $120^{\circ}C$ for 12h is not in the amorphous state as expected but in a crystalline state X-ray diffraction peaks of nearly the same angular position as the peaks of high Tc phase were observed in the precursor. After pyrolysis at $400^{\circ}C$ and calcination at $840^{\circ}C$ for 4h, the (001)peak of the high Tc phase was cleary observed. Experimental results suggest that the intermediate phase formed before the formation of the superconducting phase may be the most important factor in determining whether it is easy to form the high Tc phase or not, because the nucleation bafflers of the two superconducting phase may be altered by the variation of the crystal structures of those Intermediate phase.

  • Formation and thermal stability of a quasicrystalline phases in Al-Fe-Mo alloys were investigated by means of melt-spinning process and subsequent heat treatment test. Thermal decomposition and phase transformation process of the as-spun alloys were studied using X-ray diffraction and electron microscopy. The melt-spun Al-Fe-Mo alloys contained an icosahedral quasicrystalline phase with a quasilattice constant of 0.457 nm. Icosahedral phase formed at a composition of $Al_{82.5}Fe_{14}Mo_{3.5}$ as a metastable phase during rapid solidification was transformed into the stable crystalline phases, cubic 1/0 approximant and monoclinic ${\lambda}$-phase, upon heating. A metastable icosahedral and cubic(a = 0.93 nm) phases in as-spun $Al_{65}Fe_{20}Mo_{15}$ alloy were decomposed into two cubic(a = 0.62, 0.31 nm) phases by heat treatment.
