Ribose-5-phosphate isomerase A (RpiA) plays an important role in interconverting between ribose-5-phosphate (R5P) and ribulose-5-phosphate in the pentose phosphate pathway and the Calvin cycle. We have determined the crystal structures of the open form RpiA from Vibrio vulnificus YJ106 (VvRpiA) in complex with the R5P and the closed form with arabinose-5-phosphate (A5P) in parallel with the apo VvRpiA at $2.0{\AA}$ resolution. VvRpiA is highly similar to Escherichia coli RpiA, and the VvRpiA-R5P complex strongly resembles the E. coli RpiA-A5P complex. Interestingly, unlike the E. coli RpiA-A5P complex, the position of A5P in the VvRpiA-A5P complex reveals a different position than the R5P binding mode. VvRpiA-A5P has a sugar ring inside the binding pocket and a phosphate group outside the binding pocket: By contrast, the sugar ring of A5P interacts with the Asp4, Lys7, Ser30, Asp118, and Lys121 residues; the phosphate group of A5P interacts with two water molecules, W51 and W82.

Recent studies have shown methods of improving solar cell efficiency. Especially on single crystalline silicon wafer which is high-efficiency solar cell material that has been widely studied. Interstitial oxygen (Oi) is the main impurity in the Czochralski (Cz) growing method, and excess of this can form precipitates during cell fabrication. We have demonstrated the effect of Oi impurity and oxygen precipitation concentration of the wafer on Cz-silicon solar cell efficiency. The result showed a decrease in cell efficiency as Oi and oxygen precipitation increase. Moreover, we have found that the critical point of [Oi] to bring higher cell efficiency is at 14.5 ppma in non-existent Bulk Micro Defect (BMD).

The dynamics of nano particles in LC medium under an external electric field is of theoretical and technological interest. In this work, the dynamical characteristics of fullerene $(C_{60})$ particles in liquid crystal (LC) medium under dc electric field have been investigated. This effect was studied for homogeneously aligned nematic LC cells driven by in-plane field. The $C_{60}$ was found to be aggregated in a form of cluster inside the LC medium. Hence polystytene was used to protect the aggregation of $C_{60}$ in LC medium. When the electric field was applied, the fullerenes start to move in direction of applied electric field. The density of $C_{60}$'s particles at the electrodes increase with increase in the value of applied electric field. The dynamical motions of fullerene $(C_{60})$ particles in liquid crystal (LC) suggest that fullerene can be designed for electrophoretic displays (i.e., electronic ink).
In this study, a liquid crystal (LC) cell was manufactured for smart window applications, such as blinds, and a system for controlling the light transmission rate was developed. The threshold voltage of the LC cell was 1.325 V and when the transmission rate was 10%, the voltage showed 2.370 V, indicating that the LC cell manufactured is driven at low voltage. The LC cell also operated reliably after being heated for 10 min at 80℃. with a response time of less than 30ms. The operation system designed the applied voltage of the LC cell with a interval of about 0.5 V from 0.15 V to 3.53 V and confirmed that the light transmission rate of the LC varies depending on the actual applied voltage. These results suggest that LC cells are likely to be smart window applications.

We present highly transparent liquid crystal displays (LCDs) using hybrid films based on carbon nanomaterials, metal grid, and indium-tin-oxide (ITO) grid. Carbon based nanomaterials are used as transparent electrodes because of high transmittance. Despite of their high transmittance they have relatively high sheet resistance. To solve this problem, we applied grid and made hybrid conductive films based on carbon nanomaterials. Conventional photolithography processes were used to make a grid pattern of metal and ITO. To fabricate transparent conductive films, carbon nanotube (CNT) ink was spin coated on the grid pattern. The transparency of the conductive film was controlled by shape and size of the grid pattern and the thickness of CNT films. The optical transmittance of CNT-based hybrid films is 92.2% and sheet resistance is also reduced to $168{\Omega}/square$. These substrates were used for the fabrication of typical twisted nematic (TN) LCD cells. From the characteristics of LCD devices such as transmittance, operating voltage, voltage holding ratio our devices were comparable to those of pristine ITO substrates. The result shows that the hybrid conductive films based on carbon nanomaterials could be alternative of ITO for the highly transparent LCDs.

The Gram-negative opportunistic pathogen, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, has multiple multidrug efflux pumps. MexT, a LysR-type transcriptional regulator, functions as a transcriptional activator of the MexEF-OprN efflux system. MexT consists of an N-terminal DNA-binding domain and a C-terminal regulatory domain (RD). Little is known regarding MexT ligands and its mechanism of activation. We elucidated the crystal structure of the MexT RD at 2.0 Å resolution. The structure comprised two protomer chains in a dimeric arrangement. MexT possessed an arginine-rich region and a hydrophobic patch lined by a variable loop, both of which are putative ligand-binding sites. The three-dimensional structure of MexT provided clues to the interacting ligand structure. A DNase I footprinting assay of full-length MexT identified two MexT-binding sequence in the mexEF-oprN promoter. Our findings enhance the understanding of the regulation of MexT-dependent activation of efflux pumps.

The bacterial enzyme UDP-N-acetylglucosamine enolpyruvyl transferase catalyzes the first committed step of peptidoglycan biosynthesis, i.e., transfer of enolpyruvate from phosphoenolpyruvate to UDP-N-acetyl-glucosamine. We have overexpressed the enzyme from Haemophilus influenzae in Escherichia coli and crystallized it in the apo-form, as well as in a complex with UDP-N-acetylglucosamine and fosfomycin using ammonium sulfate as the precipitant. X-ray diffraction data from a crystal of the apo-form were collected to $2.8{\AA}$ resolution at 293 K. The crystal quality was improved by co-crystallization with UDP-N-acetylglucosamine and fosfomycin. X-ray data to $2.2{\AA}$ have been collected at 100 K from a flash-frozen crystal of the complex. The complex crystals belong to the orthorhombic space group I222 (or $I2_12_12_1$) with unit-cell parameters of a = 63.7, b = 124.5, and $c=126.3{\AA}$. Assuming a monomer of the recombinant enzyme in the crystallographic asymmetric unit, the calculated Matthews parameter ($V_M$) is $2.71{\AA}^3Da^{-1}$ and solvent content is 54.6%.
CYP107W1 from Streptomyces avermitilis is a cytochrome P450 enzyme involved in the biosynthesis of macrolide oligomycin A. A previous study reported that CYP107W1 regioselectively hydroxylated C12 of oligomycin C to produce oligomycin A, and the crystal structure of ligand free CYP107W1 was determined. Here, we analyzed the structural properties of the CYP107W1-oligomycin A complex and characterized the functional role of the Trp178 residue in CYP107W1. The crystal structure of the CYP107W1 complex with oligomycin A was determined at a resolution of $2.6{\AA}$. Oligomycin A is bound in the substrate access channel on the upper side of the prosthetic heme mainly by hydrophobic interactions. In particular, the Trp178 residue in the active site intercalates into the large macrolide ring, thereby guiding the substrate into the correct binding orientation for a productive P450 reaction. A Trp178 to Gly mutation resulted in the distortion of binding titration spectra with oligomycin A, whereas binding spectra with azoles were not affected. The Gly178 mutant's catalytic turnover number for the 12-hydroxylation reaction of oligomycin C was highly reduced. These results indicate that Trp178, located in the open pocket of the active site, may be a critical residue for the productive binding conformation of large macrolide substrates.

Aluminum induced crystallization of amorphous silicon was attempted by the aluminum substrate. To avoid the layer exchange between silicon and aluminum layer, Ni layer was deposited between these two layers by sputtering. To obtain the bigger grain of the crystalline silicon, wet blasted silica layer was employed as windows between the nickel and a-Si layer. Ni obtained after the annealing treatment at $520^{\circ}C$ was found to be a promising material for the diffusion barrier between silicon and aluminum. One way to obtain bigger grain of crystalline silicon layer applicable to solar cell of higher performance was envisioned in this investigation.

The co-precipitation technique has been applied to synthesize biphasic calcium phosphate (BCP). $Ca(NO_3)_2{\cdot}4H_2O$ and $(NH_4)_2HPO_4$ as the starting materials was used. X-ray diffraction (XRD) and Fourier transformed infrared (FT-IR) spectroscopy were used to characterize the structure of as-synthesized and calcined BCP powders. After immersion in Hanks' Balanced Salt Solution (HBSS), for 1 week a precipitation started to be formed with individual small granules on the specimen surface. An MTT assay indicated that BCP powders have no cytotoxic effects on MG-63 cells, and that they have good biocompatibility.
