  • The object of this study is to find the optimum conditions for crystal growth and kinds of crystal in ZnO-Al2O3-SiO2 glass composition. At first, the base glass composed of ZnO (44.7%), Al2O3(14.0%) and SiO2(41.3%) was melted in propane gas furnace at 1450-150$0^{\circ}C$ for an hour, and then it was poured into the stainless steel mould heated previously at $600^{\circ}C$ to obtain the thin glass test piece. Four crystal forms from base glass such as stuffed keatite, zinc orthosilicate, zinc aluminosilicate, and cristobalite were crystallized during heat treatment between 80$0^{\circ}C$ and 110$0^{\circ}C$. For the investigation of crystal growth, X-ray diffractometer and thermal differential analysis were used and the growth rate of the four crystal forms were obtained by the method of Archimedes specific gravity and intensity comparison of X-ray diffraction peak. The results obtained were as follows. 1) Stuffed keatite peaks which started to appear after two hours at 80$0^{\circ}C$ were maximum after 11 hours and this crystal breaks down to willemite irreversibly at about 100$0^{\circ}C$. 2) Development of gahnite started at 85$0^{\circ}C$ and increased with temperature growth. 3) Stuffed keatite which had been transformed slowly into willemite at 100$0^{\circ}C$ was decreased with time and willemite increased until four hours. 4) Cristobalite began to be developed after treatment of 110$0^{\circ}C$.

  • We demonstrate an effect of annealing temperature on imprinting process of BiLaO thin film for liquid crystal alignment. BiLaO prepared sol-gel process was deposited by spin coating on a glass substrate, and then transferred to a pre-fabricated aligned pattern which is fabricated on a silicon wafer by laser interference lithography. Thin film was annealed at different temperature of 100, 150, 200, and 250 ℃. From the polarized optical microscopy analysis, the liquid crystal orientation was not uniform at the annealing temperature of 200 ℃ or lower and the uniform liquid crystal alignment characteristics were confirmed at the annealing temperature of 250 ℃. From atomic force microscopy, the pattern was not transferred at a temperature of 200 ℃ or lower. In contrast, the pattern was transferred at 250 ℃. Anisotropy of the thin film was obtained by the alignment pattern transferred at a temperature of 250 ℃, and the liquid crystal molecules could be evenly oriented on the thin film. Therefore, it was confirmed that the liquid crystal alignment process by the imprinting process of the BiLaO oxide film was affected by the annealing temperature.

  • A novel crystal, the mono-protonated metformin acetate (1), was obtained and characterized by elemental analysis, IR spectroscopy and X-ray crystallography. It was found that one of the imino group in the metformin cation was protonated along with the proton transfer from the secondary amino group to the other imino group. Its crystal structure was then compared with the previously reported diprotonated metformin oxalate (2). The difference between them is that the mono-protonated metformin cations can be linked by hydrogen bonding to form dimers while the diprotonated metformin cations cannot. Both of them are stabilized by intermolecular hydrogen bonds to assemble a 3-D supermolecular structure. The four potential tautomer of the mono-protonated metformin cation (tautomers 1a, 1b, 1c and 1d) were optimized and their single point energies were calculated by Density Functional Theory (DFT) B3LYP method based on the Polarized Continuum Model (PCM) in water, which shows that the most likely existed tautomer in human cells is the same in the crystal structure. Based on the optimized structure, their Wiberg bond orders, Natural Population Analysis (NPA) atomic charges, molecular electrostatic potential (MEP) maps were calculated to analyze their electronic structures, which were then compared with the corresponding values of the diprotonated metformin cation (cation 2) and the neutral metformin (compound 3). Finally, the possible tautomeric mechanism of the mono-protonated metformin cation was discussed based on the observed phenomena.

  • ZnO-doped near-stoichiometric $LiNbO_3$ single crystals of $0.8{\sim}1.0mm$ diameter and $30{\sim}35mm$ length were grown by the micro-pulling down (U-PD) method. The structure of the grown crystals was confirmed by powder x-ray diffraction (XRD) patterns. Electron probe micro analysis (EPMA) showed that Zn ions were homogeneously incorporated In grown crystals. The threshold in ZnO doping level was confirmed that an abrupt change in the features of $OH^-$ absorption band as doping level reaching about 2 mol%.

  • In this paper, we demonstrated the orientation characteristics of liquid crystals using UV-treated FSAM as alignment layer. Moreover we confirmed the FSAM properties before and after UV treatment on indium tin oxide (ITO) glass substrates using physicochemical analysis. The hydrophobic property of the FSAM surface is change to hydrophilic through UV treatment. After UV treatment the LC molecules also were uniformly and horizontally aligned on the FSAM surfaces and the pretilt angle was obviously changed 90° degrees to 0° degrees. EO characteristic of TN cell which was fabricated with UV-treated FSAM was faster response time compare to conventional PI layer. The FSAM before and after UV treatment has a superior application potential as the LC alignment layer for LCD, potentially replacing the conventional polyimide layer.

  • The zinc(II) complex, $Zn(NCS)_2(C_3H_4N_2S)_2$, I, has been synthesized and characterized by single crystal X-ray diffraction, thermal analysis and infrared spectroscopy. The complex I crystallizes in the triclinic system, $P\bar{1}$ space group with a = 7.587(1), b = 8.815(1), $c=12.432(2){\AA}$, ${\alpha}=75.584(8)$, ${\beta}=83.533(9)$, ${\gamma}=68.686(8)^{\circ}$, $V=750.0(2){\AA}^3$, Z = 2, $R_1=0.036$ and ${\omega}R_2=0.101$. The central Zn(II) atom has a tetrahedral coordination geometry, with the heterocyclic nitrogen atoms of 2-aminothiazole ligands and the nitrogen atoms of isothiocyanate ligands. The crystal structure is stabilized by one-dimensional networks of the intermolecular $N-H{\cdots}S$ hydrogen bonds between the amino group of 2-aminothiazole ligands and the sulfur atom of isothiocyanate ligands. Based on the results of thermal analysis, the thermal decomposition reaction of complex I was analyzed to have three distinctive stages such as the loss of 2-aminothiazole, the decomposition of isothiocyanate and the formation of metal oxide.

  • In order to simulate the powder compaction process and to assess the effects of packing randomness and particle arrangement 2-dimensional model of rod array compaction using quasi-random multiparticle array is introduced. The elastic modulus of porous ceramics is computed by the homogenization method. With 3 Al₂O₃ and 3 Al particles the compaction processes associated with the porosities are simulated by the explicit finite element method, based on the elastic modulus found by the homogenization method. The simulation results are compared with both previous analytical ones and experimental measurements. Finally, in order to find the relationship between the friction coefficient of powder particles and the relative density, the sensitivity analysis is performed.

  • Fly ashes mixed with clay as 70:30 weight percent were sintered by microwave energy and a 2.45 Ghz kitchen model microwave oven was used. Samples were sintered at $1,150^{\circ}C$ and kept at that temperature up to 50 minutes by 10 minutes intervals. Microstructures were taken by Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM) and Energy Dispersive Spectrometry (EDS) analysis of a raw fly ash was taken. X-ray diffraction analysis was done, and compressive strengths and apparent densities were measured. Pore sizes of the samples became smaller as time passed by, but compressive strengths and apparent densities did not change much. Numerical analysis on the microwave heated system was carried out in order to figure out heat transfer phenomena in the cavity.

  • A complex chemical equilibrium analysis was performed to study the hot-wall CVD process of the SiC/C functionally gradient materials (FGM). Thermochemical calculations of the Si-C-H-Cl system were carried out, and the effects of process variables(deposition temperature, reactor pressure, C/[Si+C] and H/[Si+C] ratios in the source gas) on the composition of deposited layers and the deposition yield were investigated. The CVD phase diagrams of the SiC/C FGM deposition were obtained, and the optimum process windows were estimated from the results.

  • The degradation behaviors of TiN coating layers under thermo-mechanical stress were investigated in terms of comparison of finite element analysis (FEA) and experimental data. The coating specimen was designed to quarter cylinder model, and the pulsed laser ablation was assumed as heat flux condition. The FEA results showed that heat accumulation at the center of the laser-ablated spot occurred and principle stress was concentrated at the lower region of the coating layer. The microstructural observation revealed that surface melting and decrease of the coating thickness occurred in the TiN/Inconel 617 and the interfacial cracks formed in the TiN/Si. The delamination was caused by the mechanical stress from the center to the outside of the ablated spot as the FEA results expected. It was considered that the improvement of the thermal shock resistance was attributed to higher thermal conductivity of Si wafer than that of Inconel 617.
