  • Sapphire wafers are used as an important substrate for the production of blue LED (light emitting diode) and the LED's performance largely depends on the quality of the sapphire single crystals. There are several crystal growth methods for sapphire crystals and Kyropoulos method is an efficient way to grow large diameter and high-quality sapphire single crystals with low dislocation density. During Kyropoulos growth, the convection of molten melt is largely influenced by the hot zone geometry such as crucible shape, heater and refractory arrangements. In this study, CFD (computational fluid dynamics) simulations were performed according to the bottom/side ratios (per unit of the crucible surface area) of heaters. And, based on the results of analysis, the molten alumina flows and remelting phenomena were analyzed.

  • In this study, the resistance characteristics of semi-insulating SiC single crystals grown using the PVT method were investigated, considering the purity level of SiC source powders used in PVT growth and the cooling procedure after crystal growth. Two β-SiC powders with different purities were employed, and the cooling rate after growth was adjusted to achieve various resistance values. 4-inch HPSI-SiC ingots were grown using the PVT method, utilizing SiC powders with low nitrogen concentration and relatively high nitrogen concentration. These ingots were then subjected to different cooling procedures to modify the cooling rate. Transmission/absorption spectra and crystal quality of the grown crystals were analyzed through UV/VIs/NIR spectroscopy and X-ray rocking curve analysis, respectively. Additionally, electrical properties were investigated through non-contact resistivity analysis to identify the dominant factors influencing resistivity properties.

  • Fly ash 70wt% contained green bodies were sintered by using a 2.45 Ghz microwave oven and their properties were investigated. Samples were sintered at 1,150$^{\circ}C$ and kept at that temperature up 50 minutes by 10 minutes intervals. Numerical analysis on the microwave heated system was carried out in order to figure out the heat transfer phenomena in the cavity.

  • The crystalline fraction of silk fibroin (Fcp) was obtained from the aqueous solution of silk fibroin hydrolyzed by $\alpha$-chymotrypsin. The molecular weight of Fcp was found approximately 7000 by using high speed GPC. On the other hand, a high molecular weight of PIFcp product could be obtained by the reverse reaction of enzymatic proteolysis of Fcp precipitates. Some parts of this PIFcp have the molecular weights of approximately 17000 and 24000. As a result of x-ray diffraction analysis, the crystal structure of Fcp and PIFcp was turned out silk-II type and silk-I type, respectively. Upon the reverse reaction of enzymatic protelysis, the structural transition occured from silk-II type to silk-I type crystal for the most of Fcp precipitates. It was confirmed that PIFcp might be somewhat stable crystal structure of silk-I type according to the thermal analysis as well as x-ray diffraction method.

  • $Li^+$ and $Mo^{6+}$ containing huntite borates $YbAl_3(BO_3)_4$were grown by spontaneous crystallization. All crystal show only the huntite-borate phase detected by X-ray powder diffraction analysis. On the basis of the data of the composition analysis, the occupation mechanism of each cation in the huntite structure has been discussed. $Li^+$ and $Mo^{6+}$ containing $YbAl_3(BO_3)_4$shows a six times higher intensity of the green light SHG detected by the powder technique than YAl_3(BO_3)_4$.

  • The Blu-ray disc as a next generation high density optical medium uses an objective lens of high numerical aperture(NA 0.85) and blue laser in order to increase the recording density. The double layer is also useful for doubling the density. The spherical aberration of Blu-ray disc is very sensitive to the thickness of the disk because of high numerical aperture. This paper suggests a method to compensate the spherical aberration caused by the change of disk thickness, by using the Liquid Crystal lens instead of the Liquid Crystal panel. It was possible to develop both the LC panel generating the optical phase difference and LC lens changing the optical power. In this paper, we analyzed the aberration performance and a position sensitivity of the two type LC elements when the samples deviate from the optical axis of the objective lens. The results of applying this analysis show that the LC lenses rather than the LC panels have a significant assembling tolerance. The theoretical characteristics of the two elements are calculated and compared with the measurement data.

  • Two novel binuclear metal-organic coordination complexes [$Cd_2(Hdpa)_4(bpy)_2$] (1), [$Dy_2(dpa)_2(bpy)_2(NO_3)_2-(H_2O)_2$](bpy) (2) (where $H_2dpa$ = biphenyl-2,2'-dicarboxylic acid, bpy = 2,2'-bipyridine) have been synthesized under hydrothermal conditions and characterized by single crystal X-ray diffraction, spectral method (IR), elemental analysis (EA), powder X-ray diffraction (XRD), electronic spectra (UV-vis), fluorescent in the solid state and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA). Complexes 1-2 crystallizes isomorphously in the Triclinic space group P-1. The ${\pi}-{\pi}$ stacking interactions and hydrogen-bonds play a vital role in determining the crystal packing and construction of the extended 3-D supramolecular network.
