A new oscillator configuration is presented and tested for Josephson voltage standard operated at the cryogenic(4.2K) temperature. Features of active devices are investigated in aspects of 1/f noise, output power, and current collapse at low temperature. The output power of oscillator is optimized by a nonlinear design approach called Harmonic Two Signal Method(HTSM). The embedding newworks of the generalized six oscillators with tow loads are derived. A HEMT oscilliator is designed in X-Band for the Josephson voltage standard and tested at room and cryogenic(4.2K) temperatures. Oscillation frequency, output power, C/N ratio, and fequency stability are compared at room and low temperatures.

Over the past four years, as the COVID-19 pandemic has struck the world, cold chain of COVID-19 vaccination has become a hot topic. In order to overcome the pandemic situation, it is necessary to establish a cold chain that maintains a low-temperature environment below approximately 203K (-70℃), which is the appropriate storage temperature for vaccines, from vaccine suppliers to local hospitals. Usually, cryocoolers are used to maintain low temperatures, but it is difficult for small-scale local distribution to have cryocooler due to budget and power supply issues. Accordingly, in this paper, a cryogenic TSU (Thermal storage unit) system for vaccination cold chain is designed that can maintain low temperatures below -70℃C for a long time without using a cryocooler. The performance of the TSU system according to the energy storage material for using as TSU is experimentally evaluated. In the experiments, four types of cold storage materials were used: 20% DMSO aqueous solution, 30% DMSO aqueous solution, paraffin wax, and tofu. Prior to the experiment, the specific heat of the cold storage materials at low temperature were measured. Through this, the thermal diffusivity of the materials was calculated, and paraffin wax had the lowest value. As a result of the TSU system's low-temperature maintenance test, paraffin wax showed the best low-temperature maintenance performance. And it recorded a low-temperature maintenance time that was about 24% longer than other materials. As a result of analyzing the temperature trend by location within the TSU system, it was observed that heat intrusion from the outside was not well transmitted to the low temperature area due to the low thermal conductivity of paraffin wax. Therefore, in the TSU system for vaccine storage, it was experimentally verified that the lower the thermal diffusivity of the cold storage material, the better low temperature maintenance performance.

This paper describes the behavior of prestressed concrete storage tanks under cryogenic temperatures by thermal stress analysis. In concrete tanks to store up LNG, a thermal shock can occur over a global area resulting from the sudden filling of the outer tank with cryogenic storage contents. Analysis results show that internal surface of concrete tank is cooled down rapidly. Tank is subjected mostly to thermal constraint moment due to temperature gradient across its section. Constraint moment may cause tensile stresses beyond tensile strength in the wall. Problems related with concrete cracking due to temperature gradient have been considered.

In this paper, analytical studies were conducted to obtain optimal design factors and analysis parameters of liquid nitrogen cooling exchanger applied in cryogenic refrigerator. The target value of heat transfer rate was more than 1 kW and pressure drop was less than 40 kPa. Design factors of cryogenic heat exchanger included width of channel and configuration of paths. Analytical factors of liquid nitrogen cooling exchanger included temperatures of coolant header surface and inlet liquid nitrogen. The width and number of channels in the design parameters were 0.0050~0.0150 m and 4~8, respectively. The configuration of channel path was 4 ways. Temperatures of coolant header surface and inlet liquid nitrogen in analytical parameters were 74 to 78K and 82 to 86K, respectively. As result, the design factor and analysis parameter satisfying the target values were obtained. The biggest heat transfer rate was 1.36 kW with pressure drop of 32.26 kPa.
Toward the practical applications, on operation of conduction-cooled HTS SMES at temperatures well below 77 K should be investigated, in order to take advantage of a greater critical current density of HTS and considerably reduce the size and weight of the system. Recently, research and development concerning application of the conduction-cooled HTS SMES that is easily movement are actively progressing in Korea. Electrical insulation under cryogenic temperature is a key and an important element in the application of this apparatus. However, the behaviors of insulators for cryogenic conditions in air or vacuum are virtually unknown. Therefore, this work focuses on the breakdown and flashover phenomenology of dielectrics exposed in vacuum for temperatures ranging from room temperature to cryogenic temperature. Firstly, we summary the insulation factors of the magnet for HTS SMES. And a surface flashover as well as volume breakdown in air and vacuum has been investigated with two kind insulators. Finally, we will discuss applications for the HTS SMES including aging studies on model coils exposed in vacuum at cryogenic temperature.
Effects of cryogenic treatment and tempering temperature on the amount of retained austenite, hardness and wear properties has been investigated using alloy tool steel, STD 11. Cryogenic treatments were performed at the temperatures of $-100^{\circ}C$, $-150^{\circ}C$ and $-196^{\circ}C$, and tempering were performed at $200^{\circ}C$ and $530^{\circ}C$. It was shown that lower hardness value was obtained on high temperature ($530^{\circ}C$) tempering even after cryogenic treatment. And retained austenite was not entirely transformed to martensite after cryogenic treatment even at $-196^{\circ}C$, which was not consistent with the belief that $-80^{\circ}C$ was sufficient to entirely transform any austenite retained in the quenched microstructure. Austenite retained in cryogenic treated condition was completely transformed to martensite only after tempering at $530^{\circ}C$. As far as wear test conditions in this investigation, it was found that cryogenic treatments improved the sliding wear resistance, but improvement of wear resistance was not directly related with retained austenite contents. And it was found that predominent wear mechanisms of STD 11 steel were oxidation wear and adhesive wear In sliding wear conditions.
Metal 3D printing is utilized in various industrial fields due to its advantages, such as fewer restrictions on production shape and reduced production time and cost. Existing research on 3D printing metal materials focused on changes in material properties depending on manufacturing conditions and was mainly conducted in a room temperature environment. In order to apply metal 3D printing products to cryogenic applications, research on the properties of materials in cryogenic environments is necessary but still insufficient. In this study, we evaluate the properties of stainless steel (STS) 316L and CuCr1Zr manufactured by Laser Powder Bed Fusion (LPBF) in a cryogenic environment. CuCr1Zr is a precipitation hardening alloy, and changes in material properties were compared by applying various heat treatment conditions. The mechanical properties of materials manufactured using the LBPF method are evaluated through tensile tests at room temperature and cryogenic temperature (77 K), and the thermal properties are evaluated by deriving the thermal conductivity of CuCr1Zr according to various heat treatment conditions. In a cryogenic environment, the mechanical strength of STS 316L and CuCr1Zr increased by about 150% compared to room temperature, and the thermal conductivity of CuCr1Zr after heat treatment increased by about 6 to 10 times compared to before heat treatment at 40 K.

Since 1960s, cryogenic cooling technologies has been adopted in the development of spacecraft with components that must be cooled to cryogenic temperatures of 2 to 150 K. In recent years this technology has been a substantial growth in the emerging number of programs that include such spacecraft to service scientific, military, and weather observation missions. The cooling of optics and detectors to reduce signal noise in infrared (IR) telescopes is the principal applications of cryogenic cooling technologies. The choice of cooling technologies depends on the desired temperature level, the amount of heat to be removed, and the required operating life. This paper will present the status of modern cryogenic cooling technologies especially for space application.

The thermal contact resistance (TCR) is one of the important resistance components in cryogenic systems. Cryogenic measurement devices using a cryocooler can be affected by TCR because the device has to consist of several metal components that are in contact with each other for heat transfer to the specimen without a cryogen. Therefore, accurate measurement and understanding of TCR is necessary for the design of cryogenic measurement devices using a cryocooler. The TCR occurs at the interface between metals and it can be affected by variable factors, such as the roughness of the metal surface, the contact area and the contact pressure. In this study, we designed a TCR measurement system at variable temperature using a cryocooler as a heat sink. Copper was selected as a specimen in the experiment because it is widely used as a heat transfer medium in cryogenic measurement devices. We measured the TCR between Cu and Cu for various temperatures and contact pressures. The effect of the interfacial materials on the TCR was also investigated.
Cooling by gas helium circulation can be used for various HTS (high temperature superconductor) magnets operating at 20~40 K, and a cryogenic blower is an essential device for circulating gas helium in the cooling system. The performance of the cryogenic blower is determined by various design parameters such as the impeller diameter, the blade number, the vane angle, the volute cross-sectional area, and the rotating speed. The trailing edge angle and the height of impeller vane are also key design factors in determining the blower performance. This study describes the design, fabrication and performance evaluation of cryogenic blower to produce a flow rate of 30 g/s at 5 bar, 35 K gas helium. The impeller shape is designed using a specific speed/specific diameter diagram and CFD analysis. After the fabrication of the cryogenic blower, a test equipment is also developed using a GM cryocooler. The measured flow rates and the pressure differences are compared with the design values at various rotating speeds and the results show a good agreement. Isentropic efficiency is also evaluated using the measured pressures and temperatures.
