  • Corydalis Tuber has been used in traditional medicine for an analgesic, antispasmodic and gastric ulcers. For the quality control on this drug, isolation and quantitative determination of berberine and coptisine from Corydalis ternata Nakai (Papaveraceae) has been conducted by using HPLC method. Berberine and coptisine in quarternary alkaloidal fraction from the crude drug were separated on silicagel column using a $CHCl_3:MeOH\;(85:15)$ and $CHCl_3:MeOH:H_2O\;(70:30:4)$ as an eluent, and the average contents were about 0.93 and 0.36%.

  • This study presents a detailed pharmacognostical study of the root and leaf of the crude drug Clerodendrum viscosum Vent. (Verbenaceae), an important plant in the Indian system of medicine. The root and leaf samples were studied using light and confocal microscopy, WHO recommended-physicochemical determinations, and authentic phytochemical procedures. The physicochemical, morphological, and histological parameters presented in this paper may be proposed as parameters to establish the authenticity of C. viscosum root and leaf, and may possibly help to differentiate the drug from its other species.

  • The methods for isolation and quantitative determination of dioscin, a spirostanol triglycoside, from the roots of Smilax china have been developed. Isolation of dioscin was achieved by silica gel and RP-18 chromatography. The HPLC method used for quantitative determination of dioscin enabled the standardization of the crude drug. It suggests that the content of dioscin in Smilax china should be above 0.01%.

  • This paper presents a detailed pharmacognostical study of the stem and root of the crude drug Ipomoea quamoclit Linn. (Convolvulaceae). Morphoanatomy of the stem and root have been studied with the aim to aid pharmacognostic and taxonomic species identification using light and confocal microscopy, WHO recommended physico-chemical determinations and authentic phytochemical procedures. The physico-chemical, morphological and histological parameters presented in this paper may be proposed as parameters to establish the authenticity of stem and root of I. quamoclit and may possibly help to differentiate the drug from its other species.

  • Crude drug 'SanJagYag' has been used mainly as a pleurisy, abdominal pain, female disease and gastropathy. To clarify the botanical origin of SanJagYag from Korea, the anatomical characteristics of Paeonia japonica, Paeonia lactiflora and Paeonia obovata of Paeoniaceae were studied. As a result, it was clarified that SanJagYag was the root of Paeonia obovata.

  • The crude ethanol extract of leaves of Avicennia officinalis Linn. (Family: Avicenniaceae) was screened for its antinociceptive activity. The extract produced significant writhing inhibition in acetic acid-induced writhing in mice at the oral dose of 250 and 500 mg/kg body weight (P < 0.001) comparable to the standard drug diclofenac sodium at the dose of 25 mg/kg of body weight. The result tends to suggest the antinociceptive activity of the extract.
