For an accurate prediction of the temperature field induced by heated water discharged into a shallow crossflow, a two-dimensional near-field numerical model is developed. It is based on a 4-equation turbulence model in which the transport equations for mean of the temperature fluctuation squared and its dissipation rate are added to those of a 2-equation turbulence model which cannot give the information of the thermal time scale ratio. Vertical diffusion is also considered by including buoyancy production and turbulence heat flux terms. The developed model is applied to a steady flow in an open channel with simple geometry and the results are compared with existing experimental data and those of the already established 2-equation turbulence model. Numerical results of the model agree with the experimental data better than those of the 2-equation model. The present model also simulates quite adequately the physical characteristics of thermal discharge in the jet entrainment and stable regions.

A non-reacting experimental study on a normal injection into a Mach 1.92 crossflow which flows over various geometries(flat plate, small cavity, large cavity) was carried out to investigate the effect of the momentum flux ratio(J). The aft ramp of the cavity advances the increase of the penetration height and the strong two-dimensional shock from recompression region mainly affects the shock structure and mixing layer at the downstream flow. As flow runs downward, the transverse penetration height increases with increasing J(J = 0.9, 1.7, 3.4). However, above some critical ratio, jet penetration height growth with increasing J is not appeared in flow-field. Large scale cavity has a good mixing efficiency but it increases the drag loss in the combustor.

A numerical analysis is made of the fluid flow and heat transfer characteristics in the corrugated structure that traps the spent air in the corrugations between impinging jets to reduce crossflow effects on downstream jets in the array. All computations are performed by considering three-dimensional, steady state, and incompressible flow by using the ANSYS-CFX 15.0 code. Averaged jet Reynolds number is 10,000. The oblique angles of impingement jets on the spanwise section are $70^{\circ}$, $80^{\circ}$, $90^{\circ}$, and the oblique angles of impingement jets on the streamwise section are $70^{\circ}$, $90^{\circ}$, $110^{\circ}$. The investigation focuses on the oblique angle influence of impinging jet array on the fluid flow and heat transfer characteristics of a corrugated structure.

In activated sludge process, sludge settling condition is affected by organic loading rate or operation condition, and if settling condition is getting worse, it is common that overall process fails due to wash-out of biomass causing low concentration in the aeration tank. Also activated sludge process has such several problems as requiring large area, consuming a lot of power and producing large volume of sludge. Increased public concern over health and the environment combined with a strong desire to reduce capital, operating and maintenance costs, have created a need for innovative technologies for building new high quality effluents which vail meet 21st century crkeria. MBR(Membrane Bioreactor) process consists of a biological reactor and ultrafiltration(UF) membrane system that replaces the conventional clarifier of an activated sludge process. The main operating advantages of this system are that the quality of the effluent is independent of the settleability of the mixed liquor and that the effluent is free of suspended solids in any operating condition. It is possible to eliminate clarifier and to reduce the volume of aeration tank because it can afford to accumulate high biomass concentration in the bioreactor(20, 000~30, 000mg/L), which would not be possible in a conventional activated sludge process. Therefore, this process reduces overall treatment plant area. In addition to those advantages, Longer SRT condition enables higher sludge digestion in MBR process so the sludge volume produced is 50 to 70% lower than that of conventional activated sludge process There are two kinds of MBR process according to the allocations of membrane. One is cross flow type MBR of which module is located outside of the bioreactor and mixed liquor is driven into the membrane module. The other is submerged type MBR process of which module is submerged in the bioreactor and mixed liquor is generally sucked from the lumen side. addition to that the cake layer is often removed by the uplifting flow of bubbling air. A submerged MBR process is superior to a crossflow MBR in regard to the power consumption because suction pressure of a submerged MBR is generally lower than that of a crossflow MBR which has recirculation pump. A submerged MBR, therefore, has the potential to be applied to small wastewater treatment plants that need low cost treatment systems.
A simplified method for the purification of cholera toxin was developed. The 569B strain of Vibrio cholerae, a recognized hyper-producer of cholera toxin, was propagated in a bioreactor under conditions that promote the production of the toxin. The toxin was separated from the bacterial cells using 0.2-${\mu}m$ crossflow microfiltration, the clarified toxin was passed through the membrane into the permeate, and the bacterial cells were retained in the retentate. The 0.2-${\mu}m$ permeate was then concentrated 3-fold and diafiltered against 10 mM phosphate buffer, pH 7.6, using 30-kDa crossflow ultrafiltration. The concentrated toxin was loaded onto a cation exchange column, the toxin was bound to the column, and most of the impurities were passed unimpeded through the column. The toxin was eluted with a salt gradient of phosphate buffer, pH 7.0, containing 1.0 M NaCl. The peak containing the toxin was assayed for cholera toxin and protein and the purity was determined to be 92%. The toxin peak had a low endotoxin level of $3.1\;EU/{\mu}g$ of toxin. The purified toxin was used to prepare antiserum against whole toxin, which was used in a $G_{M1}$ ganglioside-binding ELISA to determine residual levels of toxin in an oral inactivated whole-cell cholera vaccine. The $G_{M1}$ ganglioside-binding ELISA was shown to be very sensitive and capable of detecting as little as 1 ng/ml of cholera toxin.

The wake-induced vibration and proximity-induced vibration of two interfering circular cylinders in tandem are investigated experimentally, using an elastically supported cylinder and a fixed cylinder in uniform crossflow. Dynamic responses and flow periodicity in wake are measured to investigate the effect of system parameters on aerodynamic instability. The parameters include the free stream wind velocity and the position of two interfering circular cylinders. The oscillating behavior of the amplitude of the elastically supported cylinder is changed by varying the position, the relative gap spacing between two interfering circular cylinders and the reduced velocities. In small gap spacing between the elastically supported cylinder located to upstream and the circular cylinder fixed to downstream, the fluidelastic instability is founded. The vibration amplitude decreases notably as gap spacing between two interfering circular cylinders becomes large. The dynamic behavior at g/D-4.0 is similar to that of the single circular cylinder.

In this study, computational simulation was performed to investigate the characteristics of air/fuel mixing according to the shape of the injector exit when the transverse jet was injected into a supersonic flow. Non-reacting flow simulation was conducted with fixed mass flow rate and the same cross-sectional area. To validate the results, free stream Mach number and jet-to-crossflow memetum ratio are set to 3.38 and 1.4, respectively, which is same as the experimental condition. Further, separation region, structure of the under-expended jet, jet penetration height, and flammable region of hydrogen for five different injectors compared.
The present study was to investigate the purification of a fermentation broth by an electromicrofiltration membrane. Microfiltration runs with a crude and a centrifuged broth, with solution of particles recovered from centrifugation and with permeates from microfiltration experiments were thus compared. Microfiltration performances were governed by colloids and small particles that induced sharp initial flux declines. For these results, the evolution of the overall membrane resistance was increased by $80\%$ in comparison with the electromicrofiltration membrane. The main focus of this study was set on the enhancement of the filtrate flux by an electric field. This pressure electrofiltration leads to a drastic improvement of the filtration by $100\%$ and the filtration time was thereby reduced. Pressure electrofiltration serves as an interesting alternative to the cross-flow filtration and it effectively separates advantageous constituents such as amino acids and biopolymers from a fermentation broth. They were equally maintained during the microelectrofiltration, although they were significantly reduced by $45\%$ by the microfiltration without the application of an electric field. Accordingly, since the electrofiltration membrane was provided more permeability, this study experimentally demonstrates that the permeability inside a membrane can be controlled using an electric field.
The present study has numerically and experimentally investigated the spray behavior of liquid jet injected in subsonic cross-flow. The corresponding spray characteristics are correlated with jet operating parameters. The spray dynamics are known to be distinctly different in the three regimes: the column, the ligament and the droplet regimes. The behaviors of column, penetration and breakup of liquid jet have been studied. Numerical and physical models are base on a modified KIVA code. The primary atomization is represented by a wave model base on the KH(Kelvin-Helmholtz) instability that is generated by a high interface relative velocity between the liquid and gas flows. In odor to capture the spray trajectory, CCD camera has been utilized. Numerical and experimental results indicate that the breakup point is delayed by increasing gas momentum ratio and the penetration decreases by increasing Weber number.

This study treats the analysis of the performance and the design of plume abatement wet/dry cooling tower with dry type heat exchanger using a numerical method. A two-dimensional analysis is performed using the finite volume method for mechanical draft counterflow and crossflow tower. For a coupling problem between water and air system, a turbulent two phase flow is considered. Effectiveness-NTU method is used for modeling of the dry type heat exchanger. The parameter change simulations of the outer wall shape, the relative flowrate of air, and attachment of an air mixer are performed to examine the effect on plume abatement. It is found that if the relative air flowrate ratio and the adequate air mixer type are chosen well in addition to the ratio of water to air flowrate, the loss of the cooling capacity and the additional cost are reduced and the plume is abated.
