STRUCTURAL INTEGRITY EVALUATION OF NUCLEAR FUEL WITH REDUCED WELDING CONDITIONS

  • Welding is required for a connection between two different components in the nuclear fuel of a pressurized water reactor. This work relies on a mechanical experiment and analytic results to investigate the structural integrity of nuclear fuel in a situation where some components are not welded to each other. A series of lateral vibration tests are performed in a test facility, and the test structures are examined in terms of dynamic behavior. In the tests, the displacement signal at every grid structure that sustains fuel rods is measured and processed to identify the dynamic properties. The fluid-elastic stability of the structure is also analyzed to evaluate susceptibility to a cross flow with an assumed conservative cross flow distribution. The test and analysis results confirm that the structural integrity can be maintained even in the absence of some welding connections.

Energy based design of a novel timber-steel building

  • Energy-based methodology is utilized to design novel timber-steel hybrid core wall system. The timber-steel core wall system consists of cross laminated timber (CLT), steel columns, angled brackets and t-stub connections. The CLT wall panels are stiff and strong, and ductility is provided through the steel t-stub connections. The structural system was modelled in SAP2000 finite element program. The hybrid system is explained in detail and validated using first principles. To evaluate performance of the hybrid core system, a 7-story building was designed using both forced-based design and energy based design (EBD) approaches. Performance of the structure was evaluated using 10 earthquakes records selected for 2500 return period and seismicity of Vancouver. The results clearly served as a good example of the benefits of EBD compared to conventional forced based design approaches.

압출관에서의 압력 및 유형변화에 따른 유체유동에 관한 연구 (A Study on the Fluid Flow by Change of Pressure & Flow in the Collapsible Tube)

  • In order to research the flow in the thin wall compliant tube, this present study is attempt to measure the cross sectional area according to change of external pressure and flow by ultrasonic method different from willy used impedance technique for flow analysis about one dimensional Steads flow. The experimental results are as follows. 1) Measurement of cross sectional area ratio by ultrasonic method by comparison with experimental results of impedance technique & theoretical results were well consent. 2) Pressure difference of upstream and down stream is alwap's maximum range at 0.4 < $\alpha$ <0.5, and have no connection with changing external pressure. 3) when the external pressure is fixed and resistance is varied, Self excited oscillation occurs in the region at 0.5 < $\alpha$ <0.6, and oscillation disappear almost at R2>=1.2

  • 형태와 진공특성이 다른 여러 용기와 도관들로 구성된 진공네트웍의 압력분포를 계산할 때 단면이 서로 틀린 요소들의 연결부에서 입출구효과에 의해 발생하는 압력강하를 기체가 흐르는 방향에 상관없이 자동적으로 고려할 수 있는 경계조건을 만들었다. 또 원추형 도관처럼 단면이 변화하는 요소를 포함하고 있는 경우 시스템이 방향성을 가지지 않도록 도관 내에서의 압력강하를 보정하는 방법에 대해 소개한다. 개발된 경계조건을 간단한 예제 진공시스템에 적용하여 입자평형식에 근거를 둔 연립방정식을 작성하고 해를 구하는 과정을 구체적으로 설명한다.

Steel-concrete composite bridge analysis using generalised beam theory

  • This paper reports recent developments concerning the application of Generalised Beam Theory (GBT) to the structural analysis of steel-concrete composite bridges. The potential of GBT-based semi-analytical or finite element-based analyses in this field is illustrated/demonstrated by showing that both accurate and computationally efficient solutions may be achieved for a wide range of structural problems, namely those associated with the bridge (i) linear (first-order) static, (ii) vibration and (iii) lateral-torsional-distortional buckling behaviours. Several illustrative examples are presented, which concern bridges with two distinct cross-sections: (i) twin box girder and (ii) twin I-girder. Allowance is also made for the presence of discrete box diaphragms and both shear lag and shear connection flexibility effects.

  • This paper deals with the exchange of tourists and the operation of sightseeing train encouraged by the inter- Korean cross-border railway project. First of all, how the inter-Korean cross-border railway project has developed will be discussed. After this, tile present tourism state, facilities, the state of railways and roads of North Korea, and major tourist attraction around the Kyonguisun will be shown. And then, several aspects on the agreements between the Korean National Railroad (KORAIL) and North Korean railroad system will be summarized. And, finally, the economic effect of the line including the operation schedule of the Kyonguisun sightseeing train, the demand forecast, the computation of railway fare, and profit sharing will be depicted.

PSCAD/EMTDC Modeling/Analysis of VSC-HVDC Transmission for Cross Border Power System Interconnection

  • When two adjacent AC systems operate at different frequency such as 50Hz and 60Hz, as in the case of ROK and Russia, the only way to practically obtain the advantages of power system interconnection is to use HVDC connection. In this paper, application of the VSC-HVDC transmission for power system interconnection between Russia and ROK is evaluated through the PSCAD/EMTDC modeling and analysis. The simulation results show the feasibility of proposed system for cross border power system interconnection.

Socio-Cultural Environment as a Context and Its Effect on Discourse in Translation

  • This paper aims to analyze the influences of the socio-cultural environment on discourse in translation. To illustrate a deep connection between discourses and societies in which they were produced, communicative patterns of high- and low-context cultures are examined. Though the original version of the translated text comes from a different culture, the translation reflects communicative preferences of the target culture. To uncover some of these preferences, a comparative study of two translations from Russian into English and from English into Russian is conducted. This study, together with further investigation of some more recent translations into Russian, revealed a number of choices affected by translators' cultural background (for example, making the translation more emotionally charged) and current ideological preferences in the society (excessive use of anglicisms).

  • Fiber reinforced plastic (FRP) structural shapes are readily available in civil engineering applications. Among many manufacturing techniques used for FRP structural shapes, pultrusion process is one of the most widely used techniques in civil engineering applications. Pultrusion is a manufacturing process for producing continuous lengths of reinforced polymeric plastic structural shapes with constant cross-section. Pultruded composites are attractive for structural applications because of their continuous mass production with excellent mechanical properties. This paper presents the results of investigations pertaining to the bolted connection with two bolts for the pultruded FRP (PFRP) structural members. PFRP bolted connection tests were conducted with end distance to bolt diameter ratio ($e_1/d_b$) and two types of bolt pattern such as horizontal (Pattern A) and vertical arrangement (Pattern B). As a result, it is found that the $e_1/d_b$ is recommended as the ratio of 4. In addition, it is also found that the bearing strengths at failure of the Pattern A and Pattern B have a similar value.

  • The force resisting ability of a connection has direct implications on the overall response of a timber framed structure to various actions, thereby governing the integrity and safety of such constructions. The behavior of timber framed structures has been studied by many researchers by testing full-scale-connections in timber frames so as to establish consistent design provisions on the same. However, much emphasis in this approach has been unidirectional, that has focused on a particular connection configuration, with no research output stressing on the refinement of the existing connection details in order to optimize their performance. In this regard, addition of adhesive to dowelled timber connections is an economically effective technique that has a potential to improve their performance. Therefore, a comparative study to evaluate the performance of various full-scale timber frame Nailed connections (Bridled Tenon, Cross Halved, Dovetail Halved and Mortise Tenon) supplemented by adhesive with respect to Nailed-Only counterparts under tensile loading has been investigated in this paper. The load-deformation values measured have been used to calculate stiffness, load capacity and ductility in both the connection forms (with and without adhesion) which in turn have been compared to other configurations along with the observed failure modes. The observed load capacity of the tested models has also been compared to the design strengths predicted by National Design Specifications (NDS-2018) for timber construction. Additionally, the experimental behavior was validated by developing non-linear finite element models in ABAQUS. All the results showed incorporation of adhesive to be an efficient and an economical technique in significantly enhancing the performance of various timber nailed connections under tensile action. Thus, this research is novel in a sense that it not only explores the tensile behavior of different nailed joint configurations common in timber construction but also stresses on improvising the same in a logical manner hence making it distinctive in its approach.
