  • In this study, I-type girders used as main members of a two span continuous steel bridge, are optimally designed by a Load and Resistance Factor Design method(LRFD) using an numerical optimization method. The width, height web thickness and flange thickness of the main girder are set as design variables, and light weight design is attempted by choosing the cross-sectional area as an object function. The main program is coded with C++ and connected with optimization modul ADS, which is coded with FORTRAN. The results of the program show that the stress constraints of noncomposite section during the initial construction stage become active in the positive moment area and the service limit state constaints become active in the negative moment area.

  • LB layers of L-$\alpha$-DLPC deposited by LB method were deposited onto n-type silicon wafer as Z-type film. Films made up of 8, 16 layers of lipid with long alkyl chain and the thickness of monolayer and multilayers was determined by ellipsometry. It was deposited Ag and Al onto LB layers and silicon wafer for electrode and small electrode exhibit high capacitance and low leakage current. The C-V curves of the MLS capacitor shows very high saturation value of capacitance. And cross-sectional SEM image of MLS capacitor indicated the presence of pore with Al electrode and we found that the Ag is good for electrode metal.

  • A new measurement method to measure vibrational motions of objects is presented. The original principle is similar to the previous work that utilized a 3-facet mirror to obtain three dimensional positions and orientations of rigid bodies. While the previous work was presented for only stationary objects, in this paper, we newly investigate the feasibility of this method for dynamic applications. The 3-facet mirror that looks like a triangular pyramid having an equilateral cross-sectional shape. The mirror has three lateral reflective surfaces inclined 45 degrees to its bottom surface, and its mounted on the object whose motion is to be measured, As optical components, a He-Ne laser source and three position-sensitive detectors(PSD) are used. The laser beam is emitted from the He-Ne laser source located at the upright position and vertically incident to the top of the 3-facet ...

  • An experimental study on heat transfer and flow in compression molding of clss-B and A SMC(Sheet Molding Compounds) in a flat plate and a cross-sectional T-shape was carried out. The temperature was measured with thermocouples at two locations in the 4 layered SMC charge and pressure was measured at the center of the top mold during compression molding. Three different mold speeds, 15, 45, 50 mm/min and two different mold temperature, $130^{\circ}C{\;}and{\;}150^{\circ}C$ were used for compression molding experiments. Experiments with different colored SMC layers were used to study flow patterns at various compression stages. In oder to predict the pressure and load in SMC compression molding, slab method was used. The predicted values of pressure and load from the slab analysis were compared well with the measured data.

  • Stability of a Bi-2223/Ag tape was studied by using a numerical method. A numerical modeling has been developed to analyze the dynamic evolution of normal zone in a composite tape Bi-2223/Ag. In this paper, the stability of HTS tape is studied by considering the non-uniform temperature distribution in a cross-sectional area. The finite-difference method(FDM) is used to solve the two-dimensional heat conduction equation. Two kinds of analyses are compared to quantify the critical disturbance energy fur quenching HTS tapes. One is the length-thickness(x-y) side and the other is the length-width(x-z) side. The results of analyses shows that the critical disturbance energies for each cases seem to be very close for considered Bi-2223/Ag tape.

  • Aluminum nanotube has been fabricated by a physical vapor deposition/atmospheric pressure injection using an anodic porous alumina film as a template. The pore external-, and inside diameters and the length of the aluminum nanotubes fabricated by this method are 60 nm, 35 nm and 2 $\mu$m, respectively. The structure of the fabricated aluminum nanotubes was examined by a kind of chemical treatment as extraction of copper on the cross-sectional area of these aluminum tubes in a mixed solution of $CuCl_2$ and HCl by difference of ionization tendency between aluminum and copper. The composition of the aluminum nanotube was identified by the two dimensional Hybrid Plasma Equipment Model (HPEM) employing the inductively coupled plasma.

  • The use of 3-D finite elements for the eigen analysis of beam-like structures with arbitrary section shape may not be practical in certain cases, from the aspect of CPU time. In this connection, this paper presents a systematic algorithm for decomposing an arbitrary section into finite number of basic ones and computing essential sectional quantities required for the eigen analysis using the beam theory. The numerical accuracy of the proposed method is assesed from the comparison with the 3-D finite . element method.

  • Groundwater preferentially flows through sediment layers with high permeability such as colluvium. Its flow paths are called groundwater vein streams. An underground temperature survey is a method to locate vein streams by underground temperature anomalies associated with flowing groundwater. A groundwater flow system near an irrigation reservoir located in the upper part of a landslide block was surveyed with this method. After a geomembrane lining was installed in the reservoir, the total cross-sectional area of the vein streams in the aquifer decreased to as little as 0.35 times that before installation of the liner. A change in groundwater quality also indicated that the mixing of groundwater with leaked water from the reservoir stopped after installation of the lining.

  • The main purpose of this paper is to present both the fundamental and some higher natural frequencies of axially loaded Timoshenko beams resting on the elastic foundation. The non-dimensional differential equation governing the free vibrations of such beam is derived in which the effects of rotatory inertia and shear deformation are included. The Improved Euler method and Determinant Search method are used to perform the integration of the differential equation and to determine the natural frequencies, respectively. The hinged-hinged, hinged-clamped and clamped-clamped end constraints are applied in numerical examples. The relations between frequency parameters and both the foundation parameter and slenderness ratio are presented in figures. The effect of cross-sectional shapes is also investigated.

  • The present study aims to derive optimal interface treatment conditions for emulating a monolithic construction. The joints in this construction are formed through the bonding shear evaluation method during the placement of ultra-high-performance concrete (UHPC) and normal strength concrete (NSC). The evaluation items include push-off tests for homogeneous UHPC + UHPC and heterogeneous NSC + UHPC. The experimental samples comprised a monolithic placement as the baseline, two levels for the separated placement according to the compression strength of concrete, and five levels for the interface treatment. The increase in the number of grooves and their cross-sectional areas only slightly influenced the bonding shear performance. The optimal interface treatment method for the homogeneous UHPC + UHPC construction grooves was at least 30mm. The heterogeneous NSC + UHPC construction should utilize waterjet roughening to expose the aggregate for the increased roughness.
