  • The essential factor for house cultivation is water management. Water requirement of crop is the most important for the water management. The water requirement of crop is different according to the area as well as climate condition and growth stage. However, the measurement of PET (Potential Evapo-Transpiration) and crop coefficient (Kc) is very difficult especially in house cultivation. Therefore, the PET and Kc of red pepper are estimated based on the lysimeter experiments carried out by the RDA for 11 years about the ratio of house cultivation to wild cultivation. Periodic PET, mean water requirement (MWR) and accumulated water requirement (AWR) of red pepper cultivated in house are evaluated.

  • This physically-based hydrologic model is developed to calculate the soil-moisture balance on paddy fields. This model consists of three modules; the first is the unsaturated module, the second is the rice evapotranspiration module with SPAC(soil-plant-atmospheric-continuum), and the third is the groundwater and open channel flows based upon the interrehtionship module. The model simulates the hydrlogical processes of infiltration, soil water storage, deep perocolation or echarge to the shallow water table, transpiration and evaporation from the soil surface and also the interrelationship of the groundwater and river flow exchange. To verify the applicability of the developed model, it was applied to the Kimjae Plains, located in the center of the Dongjin river basin in Korea, during the most serious drought season of 1994. The result shows that the estimated water net requirement was 757mm and the water deficit was about 5.9% in this area in 1994. This model can easily evaluate the irrigated water quantity and visualize the common crop demands and soil moisture conditions.

  • In this study, we performed to evaluate the water balance during the cultivation of Chinese cabbage and maize according to the soil type and water management method using weighable lysimeters, and to estimate the crop water stress coefficient and minimal water requirement by considering crop productivity and water deficiency. In 2018, Chinese cabbage cultivation period was not irrigated due to frequent rainfall two weeks after planting, so there was no difference in irrigation amount between the non-irrigated and the irrigated and little difference in crop yield. Excluding the Chinese cabbage cultivation in 2018, in the cultivation of Chinese cabbage and maize, the crop yield of irrigated plots was higher than that of non-irrigated plots. The evapotranspiration of irrigated plots was also generally higher than non-irrigated plots. Crop yield and evapotranspiration are closely related, and transpiration is active as biomass increases. The crop water stress coefficients in the middle and the late stage were 0.8 and 0.8 for Chinese cabbage and 0.8 and 0.5 for maize, respectively. The minimal water requirements for Chinese cabbage and maize were 82.0% and 68.8%, respectively, compared to the optimal water requirements (239.4 mm for Chinese cabbage and 466.9 mm for maize). These results can be used as basic data for water management for crop cultivation by securing the minimum amount of irrigation in case of water deficiency.

  • This experiment was conducted to evaluate water use efficiency of barley, wheat, and millet as a substitution crop for rice of fallow paddy field. Dry weight (DW), evapotranspiration, and transpiration of crop grown on the lysimeters controlled with 5 levels of groundwater table (GWT), 0, 25, 50, 75, and 100 cm were evaluated for optimum GWT and water use efficiency. All the lysimeters randomized with four replication arrangements were filled up sandy loam and were adjusted to the constant bulk density treated with twice water infiltration from bottom side to upper side of lysimeter. DW of barley, wheat, and millet in the plot of 0cm GWT that is saturated soil showed 34.9%, 44.7%, and 37.1% of that in the plot of 100 cm GWT, respectively showing a serious obstacle in crop growth. Evapotranspiration ratios calculated by evapotranspiration volume (mL) per DW were 166~605 mL for barley, 136~481 mL for wheat, and 81~418 mL for millet showing the order of barley > wheat > millet. Evapotranspiration ratio was increased with decrease of groundwater table that is the condition of moisture saturation. Estimation of GWT for maximum DW of wheat was 76 cm, and those of barley and millet were 100 cm below. The volumetric moisture content of lysimeter soil with cropping was markedly decreased as increase of crop growth because moisture supplying capability by capillary rise of water was less than amount of moisture required by crop.

  • Tomatoes in greenhouse are a widely cultivated horticultural crop worldwide, accounting for high production and production value. When greenhouse ventilation is minimized during low temperature periods, CO2 enrichment is often used to increase tomato photosynthetic rate and yield. Plant-induced electrical signal (PIES) can be used as a technology to monitor changes in the biological response of crops due to environmental changes by using the principle of measuring the resistance value, or impedance, within the crop. This study was conducted to investigate the relationship between tomato growth data, vital response, and PIES resulting from CO2 enrichment in greenhouse tomatoes. The growth of tomato treated with CO2 enrichment in the morning was significantly better in all items except stem diameter compared to the control, and PIES values were also higher. The growth of tomato continuously applied with CO2 was better in the treatment groups than control, and there was no significant difference in chlorophyll fluorescence and photosynthesis. However, PIES and SPAD values were higher in the CO2 treatment group than control. CO2 enrichment have a direct relationship with PIES, growth increased, and transpiration increased due to the increased leaf area, resulting in increased water absorption, which appears to be reflected in PIES, which measures vascular impedance. Through this, this study suggests that PIES can be used to monitor crops due to environmental changes, and that PIES is a useful method for non-destructively and continuously monitoring changes of crops.

  • To develop a new propagation method of Korean ginseng (Panax ginseng C.A. Meyer) by cutting, stem cuttings with leaflets obtained from ginseng seedlings were planted in rooting media treated with three levels of NAA concentration. NAA solution of 1.0 ppm was the most effective for the rooting of ginseng stem cuttings as well as for root growth after initiation of the roots from cuttings. A mixture of sand and leaf compost as a rooting medium for ginseng stem cuttings showed the best results in rooting percentage of cuttings and root growth after rooting. An acril film cap covering was very effective to prevent water loss by transpiration from the leaflets of stem cuttings and for rooting and root growth after rooting. Cuttings of leaf petiole with 5 leaflets from 2 year old ginseng plants showed good rooting as well as root growth after rooting in a mixture of sand and leaf compost treated with 1.0 ppm NAA.

  • The enhancement of leaf photosynthetic capacity can have the potential to improve the seed yield of soybean. Key targets for the increase of leaf photosynthetic capacity remains unclear in soybean. Peking, Chinese local variety, has been the useful material for soybean breeding since it shows various resistances against biotic and abiotic stress. Sakoda et al., 2017 reported that Peking had the higher capacity of leaf photosynthesis than Enrei, Japanese elite cultivar. They identified the genetic factors related to high photosynthetic capacity of Peking. The objective of this study is to elucidate the physiological basis underlying high photosynthetic capacity of Peking. Peking and Enrei were cultivated at the experimental field of the Graduate School of Agriculture, Kyoto University, Kyoto, Japan. The sowing date was July 4, 2016. Gas exchange parameters were evaluated at the uppermost fully expanded leaves on 43, 49, and 59 days after planting (DAP) with a portable gas exchange system, LI-6400. The leaf hydraulic conductance, $K_{leaf}$, was determined based on the water potential and transpiration rate of the uppermost fully expanded leaves on 60 DAP. The morphological traits related to leaf photosynthesis were analyzed at the same leaves with the gas exchange measurements. The light-saturated $CO_2$ assimilation rate ($A_{sat}$) of Peking was significantly higher than that of Enrei at 43 and 59 DAP while the stomatal conductance ($g_s$) of Peking was significantly higher at all the measurements (p < 0.05). It suggested that high $A_{sat}$ was mainly attributed to high $g_s$ in Peking. $g_s$ is reported to be affected by the morphological traits and water status inside the leaf, represented by $K_{leaf}$, in crop plants. The tendency of the variation of the stomatal density between two cultivars was not consistent throughout the measurements. On the other hand, $K_{leaf}$ of Peking was 59.0% higher than that of Enrei on 60 DAP. These results imply that high $g_s$ might be attributed to high $K_{leaf}$ in Peking. Further research is needed to reveal the mechanism to archive high $g_s$ on the basis of water physiology in Peking. The knowledge combining the genetic and physiological basis underlying high photosynthetic capacity of Peking can be useful to improve the biomass productivity of soybean.

  • .It is very importaut to know the water consumption of crops in planning irrigation works and practicing suitable soil moisture management. For the purpose of making it clear that how much water be consumed to cultivate the Chinese cabbage, Chamber method has been applied. Main equipments in the transpiration chamber are flowers, manometer and electric thermograph. The chamber made of vynyl plate has a small entrance at the base and an exit at the top, and the ventilation in the chamber was carried out by a flower through the entrance and exit. Air-flow adjusted by an orifice manometer enters the chamber from the outside over the crop canopy through the pipe like a chimney and finally goes out to the outside. Two sets which consist of a pair of dry and wet bulb made by thermistor are installed in the entrance and exit tube, and record air temperature automatically. Evapotranspiration amount is computed from the air-flow quantity and difference in absolute humidity between at the entrance and exit of the chamber by the following equation: ET=(X2-X1)${\times}$Q where ET=evapotranspiration amount X1=absolute humidity at the entrance(g/㎥) X2=absolute humidity at the exit(g/㎥) Q=air-flow quantity(㎥) This study was carried out at the upland farm of the Institute of Agriculture Engimeering and Utilization, Suwon, Korea. from 1971 to 1973. The results obtained in this experiment are as follows: 1. The total amount of evapotranspiration of Chinese Cabbage that is cultivated in autumn is 408.1mm during growth period. 2. Chinese cabbage rapidly grows up in the second ten days of September, 40th to 50th days after seeding. At the same time, the maximum amount of evaportranspiration of Chinese cabbage is 61.6mm/10 days 3. The correlation between Pan-evaporation and evapotranspiration is high, coefficient of correlation r=0.88**, and can be shown as The following regression equation: ET=0.913E+20.273 4. Evapotranspiration is closely related with meteorological factors: r=0.85**, for insolation, r=0.76** for air temperature, respectively. 5. The percentage of evapotranspiration amount, at the beginning of growth stage, gradually increases in proportion as the Chinese Cabbage grows but is largely affected by meteorological factors after the green cover formation. 6. By Blaney and Griddle formula, evaportranspiration coefficient "K" are within from 0,85 to 1.27.

  • Smart farm is a breakthrough technology that can maximize crop productivity and economy through efficient utilization of space regardless of external environmental factors. This study was conducted to investigate the optimal growth and physiological conditions of Chinese matrimony vine (Lycium chinense) with LED light sources in a smart farm. The light source was composed of red+blue and red+blue+white mixed light using a LED system. In the red+blue mixed light, red and blue colored LEDs were mixed at ratios of 1:1, 2:1, 5:1, and 10:1, with duty ratios varied to 100%, 99%, and 97%. The experimental results showed that the photosynthetic rate according to the types of light sources did not show statistically significant differences. Meanwhile, the photosynthetic rate according to the mixed ratio of the red and the blue light was highest with the red light and blue LED ratio of 1:1 while the water use efficiency was highest with the red and blue LED ratio of 2:1. The photosynthetic rate according to duty ratio was highest with the duty ratio of 99% under the mixed light condition of red+blue+white whereas the water use efficiency was highest with the duty ratio of 97% under the mixed light of red+blue LED. The results indicate that the light source and light quality for the optimal growth of Lycium chinense in the smart farm using the LED system are the mixed light of red+blue (1:1) and the duty ratio of 97%.

  • This work Was carried out to obtain the most suitable crop coefficient for the paddy rice growing in Taegu area. The result was due to the comparative measurements of evapotranspiration formula in terms of Blaney & Criddle and eight other formulas with those produced by experiment particularly in this area. The crop coefficient, evapotranspiration and transpiration ratio produced by this research are hopefully expected to be of service in the future calculation of evapotranspiration without repeating experiment respectively, whenever the water requirement of paddy rice is planned in Taegu and its vicinity. The accomplished results could be summarized as follows : The maximum amount of evapotranspiration was recorded in the early and middle parts of August. The average reading of evapotranspiration was 6.33mm/day throughout the growth. The evapotranspiration had a highly significant correlation with pan evaporation, solar radiation, sunshine hours and relative humidity of meteorological elements. K and Kc by the use of Blaney & Criddle formula calculated at 0.76 to 1.45 and 0.82 to 1.27, respectively. Its peak value appeared commonly in early August. The ratio of transpiration was 269.03.
