  • These experiments were conducted to promote the rooting in tea cutting bymeans of several root media, growth regulators, cutting material and cutting condition The results are summarized as follows. The rate of rooting was higher in the softwood than in the hardwood, and the best cutting season was about August 10 in the hardwood, about April 10 in the softwood. The most suitable root medium was the Masato at which the rate of rooting was 71%, 87% each in the softwood and in the hardwood. When growth regulators, such as oxyberon, rootone were sprayed upon the hardwood, the rate of rooting was promoted to 4 - 9 % better than that of no treatment. But such a good effect was not recognized significantly in the softwood.

Effect of Concentration and Time of Lime-Bordeaux Mixture on Growth and Disease of Four and Five Year Old Ginseng (Panax ginseng C. A. Meyer) (석회보르도액 처리농도 및 시기가 4, 5년생 인삼의 생육과 병발생에 미치는 영향)

  • Lime-bordeaux mixture (LBM) has been used instead of pesticides in ginseng field and orchard since the 1960's in Korea. In this experiment, LBM was made with different concentrations and sprayed in the field of ginseng for eco-friendly cultivation. Growth characteristics and disease such as alternaria blight, anthracnose, and gray mold were investigated in 4-5 year old ginseng after spraying LBM. LBM caused a little damage on leaf when it was sprayed at the time of leafing stage, late April and early May. Root weights of five-year-old ginseng were 43.1~51.5 g and 41.2~46.6 g in the plot of mid-April and mid-May treatments, respectively. These growth levels were further reduced as compared with that of the chemicals treatment plot. The rate of diseases in the plot of 6-6 and 8-8 ratio were 0.0~4.8% and 0.0~4.4%, respectively, which was similar with that in the plot of chemical control for alternaria blight and anthracnose. However, LBM had little effect on controling gray mold. It showed lower control effect in the plot of 4-4 ratio than that of chemical control. This result will be expected to be a useful guide that can be used in the field to the farmers of the ginseng.

  • To study the capacity of callus and shoot formation on seedling stage in soybean, excised hypocotyl, epicotyl, shoot tip, cotyledonary node and primary leaf were cultured on artificial media (MS and B$_{5}$ medium) supplemented with several hormones. Regeneration of shoots was fairly successful from shoot tip and cotyledonary node tissues in soybean. These shoots could be rooted in vitro through tissue culture technique and transplanted normally into soil. Hypocotyl and epicotyl tissues formed only callus, of which growth and appearance were different according to the kinds of media and additives. A small number of shoots were formed from primary leaf tissues, but they did not develop further.r.

  • The partitioning of dry matter into seed and pod-shell is important because yield increase can be achieved by improving the distribution rate of assimilation products to seeds. The present study was undertaken to characterize whether the partitioning of dry matter into seed was shoot- or root-controlled through graftiong techniques. Self- and reciprocal-grafts were made among four soybean genotypes, which were 'Baekunkong', 'Suwon 168', and two local soybeans with black seed coat (hereafter referred to as the 'black soybean'), 'Kangleungjarae' and 'Keumleungjarae'. Self-grafted black soybeans showed lower ratio of seed to pod-shell dry wight than self-grafted Baekunkong and Suwon 168. Varying the shoot genotypes in grafts resulted in significant differences in growth characters as well as pod and seed dry weight per plant at physiological maturity. There were significant effects of shoot genotypes on the ratio of seed to pod-shell dry weight, indication that the partitioning of dry matter into seed and pod-shell should be shoot- rather than root-controlled. The grafts with large pod-shell dry weight tended to partition relatively smaller dry matter into seed than pod-shell.
