Analyzing Technology-Service Convergence Using Smartphone Application Services (스마트폰 애플리케이션 서비스의 기술-서비스 융합 양상 분석)

  • Recently, the emergence of smartphone foster the technological convergence. This convergence no longer takes place within technologies only. Rather, convergence phenomena happen as a form of embodied services. However, previous research on convergence has been subject to the technology-oriented studies, including suggesting patent-based indexes or analyzing technological characteristics. However, investigating technology-service convergence is critical since most of new smart services are technology-based convergence services. Therefore, we analyze the pattern of technology-service convergence which occurs in the smartphone application services. We divided the smatphone application services into four categories, and employ a network analysis to represent the convergence phenomena of each category. Our study is expected to provide meaningful implication in new service development practice.

Wave scattering among a large number of floating cylinders

  • When a large number of identical cylinders are placed in an array with equal separation distance, near-resonant phenomena may occur between cylinders at critical frequencies, and cause large wave forces on each element of the array. In this paper, 64 truncated circular cylinders arranged in 4 rows and 16 columns are considered to check occurrence of near-resonant phenomena and performance of theoretical predictions based on the potential flow. Experiments are conducted in head waves to measure the wave elevation along the longitudinal centerline of the model, and measured results are compared with numerical ones. Attention is focused on the spatial variation of the wave amplitude around the first near-trapped-mode frequency.

  • The resistivity of soils around ground electrodes is changed considerably according to the factors such as soil types, water contents, grain size, temperature and pressure. In this study, ionization characteristics of different soil types containing the same amount of water content due to the impulse voltages are investigated. In order to analyze soil ionization phenomena, critical electric field intensity for ionization and pre-ionization and post-ionization resistances are measured and discussed.

  • This paper presents characteristics of soil ionization when high currents such as lightning and switching surge currents are injected into a grounding rod. Soil ionization phenomena are investigated by using both voltage and current signals recorded by oscilloscope. As a result, a critical electric field intensity($E_C$) for ionization is decreased with reduction of grain size. The pre-ionization resistance($R_1$) and post-ionization resistance($R_2$) at the sand with fine grain size are getting lower with increasing current magnitude. Finally, the time to ionization($t_1$) and ionization current peak($t_2$) of fine grain size are significantly shorter than those of medium grain size.

  • In this study, the fracture phenomena of optical disks are discussed and then some recommendations are presented to prevent the fracture. The fracture occurs when disks have crack on the inner radius of the disks. Since the crack growth and the fracture result from the stress concentration on the tip of the crack, a measure should be taken to overcome the stress concentration. This problem can be resolved by the structural modification of a disk. This study proposes 3 types of improved optical disks, which are robust to the disk fracture due to the high spinning speed of a disk. The first type is a disk reinforced by wire rings, the second type is a disk added by texture fibers, and the third type is a rubber-coated disk.

  • Thermal mass flow meters (TMFMs) are most widely used for measuring mass flow rates in the semiconductor industry. A TMFM should have a short response time in order to measure the time-varying flow rate rapidly and accurately. Therefore it is important to study transient heat transfer phenomena in the sensor tube of a TMFM that is the most critical part in the TMFM. In the present work, a simple numerical model for transient heat transfer phenomena of the sensor tube of a TMFM is presented. Numerical solutions for the tube and fluid temperatures in a transient state are obtained using the proposed model and compared with experimental results to validate the proposed model. Based on numerical solutions, heat transfer mechanism in a transient state in the sensor tube is explained. Finally, a correlation for predicting the response time of a sensor tube is presented. The correlation is verified by experimental results.

  • This review is concerned with the MP (multipactor) phenomena of the diplexer for RFDU DM of next generation satellite. The MP discharge is serious problems to design RF components in space applications such ase damage of physical structure, performance degradation, and mission failure of the satellite. In this work, we employed the 3D finite element method (FEM) to calculate the critical gap points and adopted ESTEC curve, MP susceptibility zone, to analyze the maximum handling RF power in the diplexer. And this work also recommends that one should design the tx filter of the diplexer which is more wider bandwidth upto the points to escape the ears of the group delay especially the cavity type of RF components in space applications.

A Review of Heat and Mass Transfer Analysis for Absorption Process

  • The absorber in which heat and mass transfer phenomena occur simultaneously is one of the most critical components in the absorption system. It has the most significant influence on the performance and the size of the absorption system. During the absorption process, heat and mass transfer resistances exist in both liquid and vapor regions, so that the heat transfer mode should be carefully selected to reduce them. The objective of this paper is to review the previous papers analysing mathematical models of simultaneous heat and mass transfer phenomena during the absorption process. The most conventional working fluids ($H_2O$LiBr and $NH_3/H_2O$) are considered and the most common absorption modes (falling film and bubble mode) are dealt with in this review.

The Analysis of Ventilation of Road Tunnel in Fire (도로터널 화재시의 환기분석)

  • Numerical experiments are done by a commercial code, PHOENICS to evaluate the backlayer phenomenon of smoke in case of the road tunnel fire. The independent and dependent variables are ventilation air velocity and the length of backlayer of smoke respectively. Hybrid scheme and ${\kappa}-{\varepsilon}$ turbulence model are adopted in the simulation process and mass residual is used as a convergence criterion. The experimental results say that the length of backlayer is reduced with the increase of ventilating air velocity and that there is a critical air velocity which prevents from the onset of backlayering phenomena. One finds that there is a fresh air region near the bottom of tunnel which could make the passenger escape safely from the polluted region by smoke. These phenomena come from the vertical stratification of the smoke air mixture in the tunnel.

Study of Transients at BOAO

  • As a new way to explore the universe, astronomers are now performing time-domain astronomy by surveying the universe looking for new transient phenomena and taking movies of the universe with telescopes. Large-area, time-series survey of astronomical objects are uncovering many interesting, fast-changing objects that have now been poorly understood before, such as GRBs, tidal disruption phenomena, and new types of supernova. In order to characterize these new, exciting events, it is very critical to perform follow-up observations, and 1-2m telescopes can effectively contribute to such efforts. Since 2007, our group has been performing follow-up observations of gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) and interesting transients using BOAO and other KASI facilities. Here, we present results from several key transient studies that were done by using BOAO: (1) tidal disruption event Swift J1644+57; (2) SN 2011fe that occurred in M101; and (3) several GRB events. These study demonstrates the usefulness of BOAO as a powerful transient follow-up facility. Finally, we will discuss how BOAO research activities can possibly be bolstered in this newly emerging field of astronomy.
