  • This paper presents the iron core design method of a high temperature superconducting (HTS) transformer considering voltages per turn (V/T). In this research, solenoid type HTS coils were selected for low voltage (LV) winding and double pancake coils for high voltage (HV) winding, just as in conventional large power transformers. V/T is one of the most fundamental elements used in designing transformers, as it decides the core cross sectional area and the number of primary and secondary winding turns. By controlling the V/T, the core dimension and core loss can be changed diversely. The leakage flux is another serious consideration in core design. The magnetic field perpendicular to the HTS wire causes its critical current to fall rapidly as the magnitude of the field increases slowly. Therefore in the design of iron core as well as superconducting windings, contemplation of leakage flux should be preceded. In this paper, the relationship between the V/T and core loss was observed and also, through computational calculations, the leakage magnetic fields perpendicular to the windings were found and their critical current decrement effects were considered in relation to the core design. The % impedance was calculated by way of the numerical method. Finally, various models were suggested.

  • We report on the superconducting and structural characteristics of Pb-based alloy ($Pb_{0.9}In_{0.1}$, $Pb_{0.8}In_{0.2}$ and $Pb_{0.85}Bi_{0.15}$) thin films, depending on the film deposition rate. The maximum critical magnetic field strength of $Pb_{0.85}Bi_{0.15}$ is almost six times larger than that of $Pb_{0.9}In_{0.1}$, and more rapid growth of the film enhances the critical magnetic field strength even for the same alloy material. Scanning electron microscopy inspection indicates that lower deposition rate condition is vulnerable to the formation of void structure in the film. Topographic images using atomic force microscopy are useful to optimize the deposition condition for the growth of smooth superconducting film. Our work can be utilized for future studies on hybrid superconducting devices using low-dimensional nanostructures.

  • In order to obtain ultra-high resolution MRI images, research and development of 11 T or higher superconducting magnets have been actively conducted in the world, recently. The high-temperature superconductor (HTS), first discovered in 1986, was very limited in industrial application until mid-2010, despite its high critical current characteristics in the high magnetic field compared to the low-temperature superconductor. This is because HTS magnets were unable to operate stably due to the thermal damage when a quench occurred. With the introduction of no-insulation (NI) HTS magnet winding technology that does not burn electrically, it could be expected that the HTS magnets are dramatically reduced in weight, volume, and cost. In this paper, a 6 T-class NI HTS magnet for basic characteristic analysis was designed, and a distributed equivalent circuit model of the NI coils was configured to analyze the charging current characteristics caused by excitation current, and the charge delay phenomenon and loss were predicted through the development of a simulation model. Additionally, the critical current of the NI HTS magnets was estimated, considering the magnetic field, its angle and temperature with a given current. The loss due to charging delay characteristics was analyzed and the result was shown. It is meaningful to obtain detailed operation technology to secure a stable operation protocol for a 6T NI HTS magnet which is actually manufactured.

  • We fabricated Bi-2223/Ag superconductor tape with 55 filaments and estimated the magnetic field dependence of critical current (I$_{c}$) and index n (n) up to 30 T at 4.2 K. The I$_{c}$ and n were characterized as a function of external magnetic field parallel to the tape surface on increasing and decreasing field, using a 35 T hybrid magnet. The $I_{c}$ was estimated to be 325 A, and n was 32, 22, and 26 in the electric field range of $0.1 ∼1\mu$V/cm, 1∼10 $\mu$V/cm, and 0.1∼10 $\mu$V/cm, respectively, under self-field at 4.2 K. It was observed that $I_{c}$ was dependent on magnitude of magnetic field and it decreased exponentially as the field increased; in a parallel and increasing field, It was 128 A at 30 T which is approximately 40% of critical current in self-field. In addition, the $I_{c}$ was higher on decreasing field than that on increasing one. On the other hand, n did not significantly depend on field strength up to 30 T, nor varied on whether increasing or decreasing field; n value in 0.1∼1 $\mu$V/cm was 23.0$\pm$5.2 and 27.8$\pm$8.0 on increasing and decreasing field, respectively. The n value on decreasing magnetic field was slightly higher than that on increasing field. This hysteretic behavior of n was similar to that of$ I_{c}$, which is related to the trapped flux at the grain boundary.ary.

  • In this paper, AC losses of long wire Bi-2223 tapes with different twist pitch of superconducting core were fabricated, measured and analyzed. These samples produced by a powder-in-tube method are multi-filamentary tape with Ag matrix. Also, it's produced by non-twist. The critical current measurement was carried out under the environment in Liquid nitrogen and in zero field by 4-prob method. And the Magnetic measurement was carried out under the environment of applied time-varying transport current by transport method. From experiment, the susceptibility measurements were conducted while cooling in a magnetic field. Flux loss measurements were conducted as a function of ramping rate, frequency and field direction. The AC flux loss increases as the twist-pitch of the tapes decreased, in agreement with the Norris Equation. Neutron-diffraction measurements have been carried out investigate the crystal structure, magnetic structures, and magnetic phase transitions in Bi-2223([Bi, Pb]:Sr:Ca:Cu:O).

  • The magnetic properties of the $Y_{1}Ba_{2}Cu_{3-x}Sn_{x}O_{7-y}$ superconductor were studied as a function of Sn concentration by utilizing both the vibrating sample magnetometer (VSM) and torque magnetometer. Unlike the cases where Fe and Co were substituted for Cu, the superconducting transition temperature was maintained above 90 K until x reached the value of 0.36. The lower critical field $H_{c1}(T)$ and upper critical field $H_{c2}(T)$ are measured as a function of temperature and external magnetic field, respectively. By aid of these results, $H_{c1}(0)$.($H_{c2}(0)$), the coherence length ${\varepsilon}_{0}$, the penetration depth ${\lambda}_{0}$, and the Ginzburg-Landau parameter k were oqtained. Flux pinning was also observed in the sample.

  • The effect of electric current pulses on a sub-100 nm magnetic bubble state in a symmetric Pt/Co multilayer was directly observed using a full-field transmission soft X-ray microscope (MTXM). Field-induced evolution of the magnetic stripe domains into isolated bubbles with their sizes down to 100 nm was imaged under varying external magnetic fields. Electric current pulses were then applied to the created magnetic bubbles, and it was observed that the bubbles could be either created or annihilated by the current pulse depending on the strength of applied magnetic field. The results suggest that the Joule heating plays a critical role in the formation and/or elimination of the bubbles and skyrmions. Finally, the schematic phase diagram for the creation and annihilation of bubbles is presented, suggesting an optimized scheme with the combination of magnetic field and electric current necessary to utilize skyrmions in the practical devices.

  • Magnetization versus temperature and magnetic-field measurements, M(T, $H_a$), have been carried out to study the magnetic and critical properties of polycrystalline $La_{1-x}Ba_xCoO_3$ (x = 0.3 and 0.5) cobaltites. These compounds with the density of ${\sim}6.2g/cm^3$ crystallized in the $R{\bar{3}}c$ rhombohedral and $Pm{\bar{3}}m$ cubic structures, respectively. With an applied field $H_a=200Oe$, M(T) data have revealed that the samples with x = 0.3 and 0.5 exhibit the ferromagnetic-paramagnetic (FM-PM) phase transition at the Curie temperature points $T_C=202$ and 157 K, respectively. At 4.2 K, the saturation magnetization ($M_{sat}$) decreases from 35.9 emu/g for x = 0.3-26.1 emu/g for x = 0.5. Particularly, the critical-behavior analyses in the vicinity of $T_C$ reveal all samples undergoing a second-order phase transition, with critical exponent values (${\beta}=0.328$ and ${\gamma}=1.251$ for x = 0.3, and ${\beta}=0.331$ and ${\gamma}=1.246$ for x = 0.5) close to those expected for the 3D Ising model. This proves short-range magnetic order existing in $La_{1-x}Ba_xCoO_3$. We believe that magnetic inhomogeneities due to the mixture of hole-rich FM regions (confined in the trivalent-cobalt hole-poor anti-FM matrix) and uniaxial anisotropy prevent long-range order in $La_{1-x}Ba_xCoO_3$.

  • Magnetization loss which is generated in HTS wire varies with the direction of the external magnetic field. This paper calculates the magnetization loss in an HTS transformer winding, where effects of the direction of magnetic field are considered. Kim model is used to consider the variation of the critical current with magnetic field and Brandt equation is used to calculate the loss by perpendicular magnetic field in transformer winding. Magnetization loss in an HTS transformer can be calculated more precisely with this paper.

  • The method to determine the operating current of HTS magnets needs to be different from that of LTS magnets. This paper presented estimation of the critical current of pancake windings. The pancake windings can be excited by a single power source or by multiple power sources. Critical currents were determined by using field dependent E-J relation. For the better estimation of the critical current, a new method to define the magnetic field of the HTS wire has been proposed. Calculated critical currents of pancake windings were compared with measured ones of the HTS BSCCO magnet consisting of 10 pancake windings. According to the test results, the estimated critical currents of pancake windings agreed well with that of measured ones. Effects of the single and multiple power source excitation on the critical currents have been also examined.
