  • In the 21st century, safety issues in the strained silicon industry, such as dislocation injection, should be carefully considered. This is because a microelectronic device usually contains sharp features (e.g., edges and corners) that may intensify stresses, inject dislocations into silicon, and ultimately cause the failure of the device. In this paper, critical residual stresses in various strained structures are calculated. It is confirmed that this model correctly predicts trends and the order of magnitude of critical residual stresses.

  • This study analyzes a new fashion phenomenon for critical fashion. Critical fashion is a message-centered fashion that delivers consciousness and sociocultural issues for contemporary society. The research method for this study combined literature reviews and case studies along with a research scope, that reviewed aspects of critical fashion through works, presentations, and images of collections, various media, and joint projects from the 2000s to the present day. This study indicates that critical fashion exhibits a conceptual pattern that metaphorically expresses the message of designers' perspectives on society and the fashion system. Critical fashion designers' socially critical messages began to emerge in avant-garde fashion influenced by avant-garde art movement that then developed into a conceptual fashion heavily influenced by conceptual art movement before it evolves into concepts of critical fashion. Critical fashion has been influenced by community-oriented critical art, which signifies that the characteristic of criticism of an art system is expressed through the language of fashion. In conclusion, critical fashion resists the idea of the integration of a cultural industry whose homogeneity is continuously collapsing the differences for the purpose of consumption and challenges to the established fashion system.

  • This study defines critical fashion designs and investigate its critical messages on fashion itself. The critical messages on fashion are categorized into two major issues of a fashion industry system and fashion consumer culture. This study contributes to the understanding of meaning and value for critical fashion messages that match critical art. As the research method, this study combines a literature review and case studies and the research scope focuses on cases that have appeared in fashion media since the 2000s when social critical messages in fashion began to emerge. The results of the study are as follows. Critical designers such as Viktor & Rolf, Elisa van Joolen, Issey Miyake, and Mary Ping have delivered messages challenging the nature of fashion industry system that criticize the cycle and limitation of a fashion system and pursues changes in perception of sustainability. The critical message on fashion consumer culture articulated by designers such as Alexander McQueen, Vivienne Westwood, Hussein Chalayan, and Ricarda Bigolin & Nella Themelios insist on the formation of community while delivering a critical message on social, political, and cultural problems that raise the mechanism of social awareness through fashion design.

  • Information Systems(IS) departments face many challenges in today's rapidly changing environment. One approach to understanding the challenges by IS departments is to survey IS managers in order to elicit their key issues. The study compares and contrasts the major findings of key information systems management issues in Korea and United States. It examines the key concerns of IS managers on these areas focusing on identifying and explaining regional similarities and differences. IS managers in Korea and United States show a reasonable level of agreement on the most critical issues they face. In some of the issues the differences are found and possible reasons for these differences are discussed. The study concludes by suggesting an evolution model that can explain the changing nature of the IS issues across time and nations.

  • This paper is to review and organize performance strategies, issues, and measures for the efficient operation of order picking function. Order picking is the process of retrieving items from storage to meet a specific customer order, which is known to be the most labor-intensive and costly function among all the warehouse functions. This function is also important in that it has a critical impact on downstream customer service. For understanding the background of order picking and related performance issues, we will briefly introduce warehousing functions. Then we will introduce material handling within a warehouse and order picking strategies. Lastly, we will discuss about performance issues and measures in the domain of order picking operations. Productive and quality measures will be reviewed in more detail.

  • This paper explores the educational method of using films as a means to cultivate critical thinking abilities for engineering students. It provides a practical educational model that elaborates on how films could be used as case studies to draw relevant questions, and in the process of answering them, develop students' ability to think critically. The educational model proposes a learning method of enhancing critical thinking abilities through debates and essay writing on issues raised in films. Furthermore, the paper entails concrete learning objectives on critical thinking education, and standards to evaluate levels of enhancement. Through raising the critical thinking abilities of engineering students, this paper will contribute to the utilization of creative ideas in the process of engineering research. Furthermore, the concept of utilizing films as a model for education used in this study could be adapted for fields other than that of engineering.

  • Purpose - The paper aims to explore the critical and uncover issues encountered to the supply-chain companies in launching halal based services in India. Research design, data, and methodology - After a meticulous review of relevant literature on the halal concept and halal logistics, researchers involved in a data collection by conducting semi-structured focus group interviews. Four groups with a maximum of 5 members each have chosen from the areas of transportation, warehousing, certification, and packaging. A total of 20 questionnaires were collected by applying purposive sampling method. Results - More than 95 percent of the chosen focus groups agreed that they know only about halal but don't have any exposure to halal logistics. The discussion has revealed that the adoption rate for halal transportation, warehousing, halal certification, and packaging is almost zero. The respondents were chosen only from transportation, warehousing, certification and packaging companies from south India which are operating throughout India. This research never attempts to be acquainted with the opinions of channel members who directly or indirectly involved in meeting customer demands. Conclusions - This is a ground-breaking effort aimed to study the critical issues related to Indian halal logistics which is beneficial to both logistic companies as well as to the academic world.

  • Herein, we report meaningful and selective review of the progress made on 'Vortex Induced Vibration (VIV)' and 'Vortex Induced Motion (VIM)' of 'Structures of Specific Shapes (SoSS)' subjected to steady uniform flow and of relevance to/in marine structures. Important and critical elements of the numerical methods, experimental methods, and physical ideas are listed and analysed critically and the limitations of the current state of art of VIV/VIM are discussed in-detail. Our focus and aim are to analyse the existing researches with respect to the application in analyses, design and production of marine structures and the reported reviews centre on these only. We identify the critical and important issues that exist in the current literature and utilise these issues to highlight the challenges that need to be tackled to design and develop new age marine structures that can exist and operate safely in the areas of dominance by the VIV/VIM. Finally, we also identify some areas for future scope of research on VIV/VIM.

  • Mobile devices in the next generation such as camera, cell phone, network, Note PC, etc. require higher power and energy sources due to convergences of various functions. Direct methanol fuel cell (DMFC) has been focused as an attractive power source, but there are critical issues involved in its commercialization with regard to the core technologies of materials, components, and system. The requirements of key technologies are differentiated from applications and fuel supply methods. Here, the roles of the proton-conducting membrane are discussed and the current status of DMFC systems is discussed in terms of proton conductivity, methanol permeability, and water management. Materials such as perfluorinated and partially fluorinated membranes, hydrocarbon membranes, composite membranes, and other modified ionomers have been studied. These would explain the critical issues of DMFC and the role of membranes for commercialization.
