  • Background: This study aimed to investigate the effects of critical thinking and good communication skills on the problem-solving abilities of dental hygiene students. Methods: A total of 508 dental hygiene students were convenience-sampled from 3 universities. Results: The results revealed that critical thinking had the highest intellectual fairness score of 3.60, and systematicity was the lowest at 3.19. The values for communication skills were high in reaction, social adequacy, and concentration, with an average of 3.65. Problem-solving abilities were in the following order: clarification of the problem, seeking solutions, and decision making. According to general characteristics, more extroverted personalities possessed higher levels of critical thinking, communication skills, and problem-solving abilities (p<0.01). Critical thinking scores were high (p=0.016) in students who responded that peer relationship was difficult; however, their communication skills were the lowest (p<0.001). Additionally, problem-solving abilities were highest among students who reported a difficult peer relationship (p=0.001). The higher the satisfaction with dental hygiene academics, the higher the critical thinking, communication skill, and problem-solving ability (p<0.001). Critical thinking showed a high positive correlation with variables in the following order: clarification of the problem, performing the solutions, seeking solutions, decision making, and evaluation and reflection. The communication skills were also related to these variables listed above (p<0.01). With critical thinking, confidence, watchfulness, intellectual passion/curiosity, sound skepticism, objectivity, and systematicity all influenced the problem-solving ability. Conclusion: Communication skills were influenced by noise control, putting on the other's shoe, social tensions, and efficiency, which affected the problem-solving ability. Dental clinics require dental hygienists to have critical thinking to make analytical judgments and effective communication skills to solve human relation problems with patients and care-givers. Therefore, these skills should be developed in dental hygiene students to improve their problem-solving abilities.

Data was collected from 1st to 30th, May 2012 used a questionnaire which included Kolb's learning style inventory, critical thinking disposition inventory, communication skill inventory. The SPSS 18.0 Window program was used for descriptive statistics, t-test, ANOVA, Pearson's correlation coefficient, and stepwise multiple regression. Results: Learning styles of subjects were diverging 39.5%, accommodating 32.6%, assimilating 22.7%, and converging 5.2%. The total mean score of critical thinking disposition and communication skill was 3.58 and 3.39 respectively. The score of Critical thinking disposition(t=3.06, p=.002) and Communication skill(t=3.25, p=.002) significantly differed between clinical practice satisfaction. Communication skill was the most significant predictor and accounted for 41.3% of the variance in critical thinking disposition in nursing students. Conclusion: It is important for students to use all four learning styles rather than to rely on one style. There should be more emphasis placed on the development of positive critical thinking disposition and communication skill of nursing students.

  • Purpose: The study is to confirm the influence of self-efficacy, critical thinking disposition, self-leadership, and communication competency on the core competencies of the preceptor. Methods: Data were collected from August 27 to September 7, 2017 using structured questionnaires for 127 preceptors at a general hospital located in Korea. SPSS/Win 23.0 was used to analyze the frequency, percentage, mean, standard deviation, independent t-test, one-way ANOVA, Pearson's correlation coefficients, and stepwise multiple regression. Results: The mean score of the core competencies of the preceptors was $3.94{\pm}0.35$ (range 1-5); self-efficacy was $3.88{\pm}0.49$; critical thinking disposition was $3.54{\pm}0.36$; self-leadership was $3.66{\pm}0.39$; communication competency was $3.71{\pm}0.35$. There were no statistically significant differences between the core competencies of the preceptor and general characteristics. The core competencies of the preceptors were significantly correlated with self-efficacy (r=.61, p<.001), critical thinking disposition (r=.69, p<.001), self-leadership (r=.59, p<.001), and communication competency (r=.58, p<.001). The core competencies of the preceptors were affected by critical thinking disposition (${\beta}=.54$, p<.001), followed by communication competency (${\beta}=.24$, p<.001). The explanatory power by the factors was 51% (F=63.66, p<.001). Conclusion: The results suggest that critical thinking disposition and communication competency are important predictors of the core competencies of the preceptors.
