  • In order to evaluate the lifespan of high-temperature parts with thermal barrier coating in gas turbines used for power generation, this study was performed on an 80 MW-class gas turbine exceeding 24 k equivalent operating hours. Degradation characteristics were evaluated by analyzing the YSZ (Yttria Stabilized Zirconia) top coat, which serves as the thermal barrier coating layer, the NiCrAlY bond coat, and interface layers. Microstructural analysis of the top, middle, and bottom sections showed that Thermal Growth Oxide (TGO) growth, Cr precipitate growth within the bond coat layer, and formation of diffusion layer occur actively in high-temperature sections. These microstructural changes were consistent with damaged areas of the thermal barrier coating layer observed at the surface of the used blade. The distribution of Cr precipitates within the bond coat layer, in addition to the thickness of TGO, is regarded as a key indicator in the evaluation of degradation characteristics.

  • We developed a 0.1-㎛ metamorphic high electron mobility transistor and fabricated a W-band monolithic microwave integrated circuit chipset with our in-house technology to verify the performance and usability of the developed technology. The DC characteristics were a drain current density of 747 mA/mm and a maximum transconductance of 1.354 S/mm; the RF characteristics were a cutoff frequency of 210 GHz and a maximum oscillation frequency of 252 GHz. A frequency multiplier was developed to increase the frequency of the input signal. The fabricated multiplier showed high output values (more than 0 dBm) in the 94 GHz-108 GHz band and achieved excellent spurious suppression. A low-noise amplifier (LNA) with a four-stage single-ended architecture using a common-source stage was also developed. This LNA achieved a gain of 20 dB in a band between 83 GHz and 110 GHz and a noise figure lower than 3.8 dB with a frequency of 94 GHz. A W-band image-rejection mixer (IRM) with an external off-chip coupler was also designed. The IRM provided a conversion gain of 13 dB-17 dB for RF frequencies of 80 GHz-110 GHz and image-rejection ratios of 17 dB-19 dB for RF frequencies of 93 GHz-100 GHz.

  • The purpose of this research is to propose a program for teaching and learning effective problem-solving for gifted students based on abductive inference. The role of abductive inference is important for scientific discoveries and creative inferences in problem-solving processes. The characteristics of creativity and abductive inference were investigated, and the following were discussed: (a) a suggestion for a new program based on abductive inference for creative outcomes, this program largely consists of two phases: generative hypotheses and confirmative hypotheses, (b) a survey of the validity of a program. It is typical that hypotheses are confirmed in phases through experiments based on hypothetic deductive methodology. However, because generative hypotheses of this hypothetic deductive methodology are not manifest, we maintained that abductive inference strategies must be used in a Creative Teaching-learning Program for gifted science students.

  • Effect of the processes of polysilazane solid electrolyte layer and silver (Ag) active electrode on the electrical characteristics of memristor was investigated. The memristor with the solid electrolyte annealed at higher temperature exhibited the higher set voltage and better memory retention characteristics than that annealed at lower temperature. The increase in the set voltage and the improvement of the memory retention characteristic at high annealing temperature were attributed to a reduction in the void density and an increase in the void uniformity inside the solid electrolyte, respectively. In the case where the polysilazane solution's concentration is high, the memristor exhibited rapid degradation of low resistive state even annealed at high temperature. Lastly, it was shown that the memristor with the solution-processed Ag active electrode showed WORM property unlike that with the vacuum-processed Ag active electrode. The WORM property was possibly due to morphological defects present in the solution-processed Ag active electrode.

  • Recently, the replacement of creative directors of fashion brands has gained attention from both researchers and practitioners. This study selected three representative fashion brands whose creative directors were replaced in the last 10 years, and analyzed the changed characteristics of their magazine advertisements. Literature studies and case studies were conducted as research methods. The subjects of the case studies were three fashion brands - 'Saint Laurent', 'Louis Vuitton', and 'Gucci'. Magazine advertisements were divided into two aspects: fashion photo elements and layout. The former can be classified into three components: the presence of a specific situation, the background of photos and objects, and the atmosphere of models. The latter can be classified into two components: the logo style and pictorial color. In terms of fashion photo elements, the presence of a specific situation in magazine advertisements appeared differently, depending on whether creative directors focus on the brand's own identity or on their own concept of each season. Also, the background of photos and objects, and the atmosphere of models changed depending on the situation. In terms of layout, there is no dramatic change in their logo styles, for they want to preserve their long tradition. And the more a creative director pursues younger sensibility, the more black and white color effect are added towards magazine advertisements. This study has its significance in that it confirms the replacement of creative directors has considerable influence on fashion brands' images and their magazine advertisements.

  • The purpose of this paper is to analyze university students' types of spatial consumptive decision behavior in order to provide a guideline on development of creative squares on campus. In particular, it is investigated how student's general characteristics, such as gender, age and major, awareness of creative squares, and preferred spatial types have influence on types of spatial decision consumptive behavior. In addition, correlations among the factors and types are analyzed. As a specific method for gathering information, a questionnaire composed of 46 questions was drawn up to conduct a survey of 206 students of S University in Seoul. The collected data from the survey were analyzed using SPSS windows v17.0. Based on a few previous works, the spatial consumptive decision behavior is classified into four types with Crombach ${\alpha}=0.794$ : 'Exploration' type, 'Experience' type, 'Showing-off type, and 'Trend-Following' type. The main results of this paper can be summarized as follows. First, all factors that affect spatial consumptive decision behavior are more or less correlated with one another. Second, awareness of creative square is significantly different according to the age and major of students. Third, in general, the 'Exploration' type embraces the largest number of students, followed by 'Experience' type, 'Showing-off type, and 'Trend-Following' type. Fourth, the portion of students belonging to each type is a little different according to the major of students. Finally, each type of spatial consumptive decision behavior is highly correlated with the gender and preferred spatial types of students. It was also found that all types of students prefer three to five specific spatial types. Accordingly, the identified spatial types can be exploited in developing a creative square in campus. The results of this paper are expected to expedite follow-up research on creative squares on campus under various conditions.
