  • This study experimentally investigated the flexural capacity of a concrete beam reinforced with a newly developed GFRP bar that overcomes the lower modulus of elasticity and bond strength compared to a steel bar. The GFRP bar was fabricated by thermosetting a braided pultrusion process to form the outer fiber ribs. The mechanical properties of the modulus of elasticity and bond strength were enhanced compared with those of commercial GFRP bars. In the four-point bending test results, all specimens failed according to the intended failure mode due to flexural design in compliance with ACI 440.1R-15. The effects of the reinforcement ratio and concrete compressive strength were investigated. Equations from the code were used to predict the deflection, and they overestimated the deflection compared with the experimental results. A modified model using two coefficients was developed to provide much better predictive ability, even when the effective moment of inertia was less than the theoretical $I_{cr}$. The deformability of the test beams satisfied the specified value of 4.0 in compliance with CSA S6-10. A modified effective moment of inertia with two correction factors was proposed and it could provide much better predictability in prediction even at the effective moment of inertia less than that of theoretical cracked moment of inertia.

  • The purpose of this study is to evaluate the behavior and strength of prestressed concrete deep beams using nonlinear analysis. By using a sophisticated nonlinear finite element analysis program, the accuracy and objectivity of the assessment process can be enhanced. A computer program, the RCAHEST (Reinforced Concrete Analysis in Higher Evaluation System Technology), was used for the analysis of reinforced concrete structures. Tensile, compressive and shear models of cracked concrete and models of reinforcing and prestressing steel were used to account for the material nonlinearity of prestressed concrete. The smeared crack approach was incorporated. A bonded or unbonded prestressing bar element is used based on the finite element method, which can represent the interaction between the prestressing bars and concrete of a prestressed concrete member. The proposed numerical method for the evaluation of behavior and strength of prestressed concrete deep beams is verified by comparing its results with reliable experimental results.

  • The faults of the squirrel cage induction motor is grew increasingly complex as the faults resulting in the shorting of a stator winding and the broken rotor bar or cracked rotor end ring, bearing faults, and so on. The users of electrical machines initially relied on simple protections such as over-current, over-voltage, earth-fault, etc. to ensure safe and reliable operation. but this method cause heavy financial losses and the threat of safety therefore it has now become very important to diagnose faults at there very inception. in this paper, we are going to discuss the detection method of broken rotor bar of squirrel cage induction motor by the motor current signal analysis(MCSA) and the opening terminal voltage signal analysis.

  • Structural walls have been favored for the design of reinforced concrete buildings in seismic zone areas because they provide an efficient bracing system and offer great potential for lateral load resistance and drift control. Loads on structures due to earthquakes are not unlikely to reach, if not exceed, the design load levels. Hence, structural damage to walls is inevitable, and it is necessary to repair this damaged walls. Yet, information on repair method and data related to the strength and deformation characteristics of repaired walls is limited. In this study, specimens which have their aspect ratios of about 1 to 3 will be repaired. For the repairing the damaged walls, new concrete and new reinforcing bar are replaced with cracked concrete and the buckled reinforcing bar, respectively. The objective of this study is to evaluate the performance of the repaired structural walls in the capacity of strength, stiffness, and maximum deformation comparing with the undamaged walls.

  • To predict the shear strength of low - rise reinforced concrete shear walls with boundary elements, truss model theory considering the Vecchio - Collins stress - strain curve for softened concrete is applied. The model transforms cracked shear walls with a truss which consists of vertical bar. horizontal bar and diagonal concrete strut, and is based on equilibrium and compatibility conditions among three truss components, as well as stress - strain relationship considered for softening in diagonal concrete strut. In barbell specimens(M/VD = 0.75. fc = 420 kg/$\textrm{cm}^2$), the ratio of experimental to analytical maximum shear strength was within 0.83 ν$_{exp}$. / ν$_{cal}$. 1.25 with a relatively good agreement. As a result, the truss model was observed to be capable of predicting the maximum shear strength wi th a reasonable accuracy.acy.

  • Steel corrosion in reinforced concrete structures leads to concrete cover cracking, reduction of bond strength, and reduction of steel cross section. Among theses consequences mentioned, reduction of bond strength between reinforcement and concrete is of great importance to study the behaviour of RC members with corroded reinforcement. In this paper, firstly, an analytical model based on smeared cracking and average stress-strain relationship of concrete in tension is proposed to evaluate the maximum bursting pressure development in the cover concrete for noncorroded bar. Secondly, the internal pressure caused by the expansion of the corrosion products is evaluated by treating the cracked concrete as an orthotropic material. Finally, bond strength for corroded reinforcing bar is calculated and compared with test results.

  • For the last four decades, tension test of notched bars has been performed to investigate the effect of stress triaxiality on ductile fracture. To quantify the effect of the notch radius on stress triaxiality, the Bridgman equation is typically used. However, recent works based on detailed finite element analysis have shown that the Bridgman equation is not correct, possibly due to his assumption that strain is constant in the necked ligament. Up to present, no systematic work has been performed on fully plastic stress fields for notched bars in tension. This paper presents fully plastic results for tension of notched bars and plates in plane strain, via finite element limit analysis. The notch radius is systematically varied, covering both un-cracked and cracked cases. Comparison of plastic limit loads with existing solutions shows that existing solutions are accurate for notched plates, but not for notched bars. Accordingly new limit load solutions are given for notched bars. Variations of stress triaxiality with the notch radius and depth are also given, which again indicates that the Bridgman solution for notched bars is not correct and inaccuracy depends on the notch radius and depth.

  • In this paper, mode I fracture toughness of rock was determined by direct and indirect methods using Particle Flow Code simulation. Direct methods are compaction tension (CT) test and hollow centre cracked quadratic sample (HCCQS). Indirect methods are notched Brazilian disk (NBD) specimen, the semi-circular bend (SCB) specimen, hollow centre cracked disc (HCCD), the single edge-notched round bar in bending (SENRBB) specimen and edge notched disk (END). It was determined that which one of indirect fracture toughness values is close to direct one. For this purpose, initially calibration of PFC was undertaken with respect to data obtained from Brazilian laboratory tests to ensure the conformity of the simulated numerical models response. Furthermore, the simulated models in five introduced indirect tests were cross checked with the results from direct tests. By using numerical testing, the failure process was visually observed. Discrete element simulations demonstrated that the macro fractures in models are caused by microscopic tensile breakages on large numbers of bonded discs. Mode I fracture toughness of rock in direct test was less than other tests results. Fracture toughness resulted from semi-circular bend specimen test was close to direct test results. Therefore semi-circular bend specimen can be a proper test for determination of Mode I fracture toughness of rock in absence of direct test.
