  • A theoretical prediction model of fiber bridging curve was established based on the assumption that fibers are uniformly distributed on the crack surface. However, the distance between fibers and their orientation with respect to crack surface can greatly affect the prediction of fiber bridging curve. Since, the shape of fiber bridging curve is a critical factor for predicting the tensile stress-strain relationship of ECC, it is expected that the assumption of uniform distribution of fiber may cause a significant error when predicting the tensile behavior of ECC. To overcome this shortcoming, a new prediction method of stress-strain relation of ECC is proposed based on the modified fiber bridging curve. Only effective fibers are taken into account considering the effects of their orientation and distance between them. Moreover, the approach for formulating the tensile stress-strain relation is discussed, where a procedure is presented for obtaining important parameters, such as the first crack strength, the peak stress, the displacement at peak stress, tensile strain capacity, and the crack spacing. Subsequent uniaxial tensile tests were performed to validate the proposed method. It was found that the predicted stress-strain relations obtained based on the proposed modified fiber bridging curve exhibited a good agreement with experimental results.

  • The loss of strength in a structure as a result of cyclic loads over a period of life time is an important phenomenon for the life-cycle analysis. Service loads are accentuated at the areas of stress concentration, mainly at the connection of components. Structural components unavoidably are affected by defects such as surface scratches, surface roughness and weld defects of random sizes, which usually occur during the manufacturing and handling process. These defects are shown to have an important effect on the fatigue life of the structural components by promoting crack initiation sites. The value of equivalent initial flaw size (EIFS) is calculated by using the back extrapolation technique and the Paris law of fatigue crack growth from results of fatigue tests. We try to analyze the effect of EIFS distribution in a multiple site damage (MSD) specimen by using the extended finite element method (XFEM). For the analysis, fatigue tests were conducted on the centrally-cracked specimens and MSD specimens.

  • This paper presents a new approach with meso scale structure models to express mechanical property, such as stress - strain relationships, of concrete. This approach is successful to represent both uniaxial tension and uniaxial compression stress - strain relationship, which is in macro scale. The meso scale approach is also applied to predict degraded mechanical properties of frost-damaged concrete. The degradation of mechanical properties with frost-damaged concrete was carefully observed. Strength and stiffness in both tension and compression decrease with freezing and thawing cycles (FTC), while stress-free crack opening in tension softening increases. First attempt shows that the numerical simulation can express the experimentally observed degradation by introducing changes in the meso scale structure in concrete, which are assumed based on observed damages in the concrete subjected to FTC. At the end applicability of the meso scale approach to prediction of the degradation by combined effects of salt attack and FTC is discussed. It is shown that clarification of effects of frost damage in concrete on corrosion progress and on crack development in the damaged cover concrete due to corrosion is one of the issues for which the meso scale approach is useful.

  • In this study, test results for fatigue crack propagation of Al-2024-T3511 are presented considering corrosion effects, and fatigue lifes are compared for the cases of corrosion and non-corrosion. Higher corrosion environments show lower fatigue life and faster crack growth. To predict the corrosion fatigue life, a corrosion factor concept is newly introduced and applied in Paris' law. The predicted results show good agreement with experimental data and this corrosion fatigue model can be successfully used for the prediction of fatigue life of aluminum structure with corrosion effects.

  • Fretting is a kind of wear which effects on reliability and durability. When machine parts are joined joint in parts such as a bolt or a rivet or a pin, fretting phenomenon is occurred by micro relative movement. When fretting occurs in joint parts, there is wear which is the cause of fatigue crack. Recently, although the ways of assessment of fatigue and damage tolerance are established, there is no way to evaluate fatigue crack initiation life by fretting phenomenon. Consequently, the prediction of life and prevention plan caused by fretting are needed to improve reliability. The objective of this paper is to predict fretting wear by using a experimental method and contact analysis considering wear process. For prediction of fretting wear volume, systematic and controlled experiments with a disc-plate contact under gross slip fretting conditions were carried out. A modified Archard equation is used to calculate wear depths from the contact pressure and stroke using wear coefficients obtained from the disc-plate fretting tests.

  • Microcracking of type 304 stainless steel at $593^{\circ}C(1,100^{\circ}F)$ has been studied, in particular, initiation, growth, and coalescence of fatigue and creep microcracks on smooth specimens and small notch specimens via surface replicas and photomicrographs. Quantitative information, such as, initiation period, growth, and coalescence behavior, statistical distributions of crack length, density of cracks, distribution patterns and crack growth properties, were obtained. From this study, the fracture process, fatigue life, and creep life prediction characterized by the growth of surface microcracks have been analysed by a new approach unifying the conventional approaches based on the final fracture of materials with the fracture mechanics approach. Knowledge of these parameters is critical for the application of fracture mechanics to fatigue and creep life assessment, and the damage evaluation of structures at elevated temperature.

  • The effects of % overload (% O.L), baseline stress intensity factor range (.DELTA. $K_{b}$) and dimension-less crack depth (a/W) are examined for the retardation behaviors after a single overload and high-low block loads in 7075-T73 aluminum alloy. And wheeler model, which is one of the fatigue life prediction models, is modified to predict retardation life using these test results. The retardation cycles( $N_{d}$) increased with a decrease in a/W and an increase in % O.L. and (.DELTA. $K_{b}$) These effects are more severe after high-low block loads than single overload. In the case of single overload, the main mechanisms of the retardation are the crack closure and the relaxation of K due to crack branching. But in the case of high-low block loads, that of the main mechanism is the crack closure caused by the accumulated compressive residual stree at the crack tip, which is related with the contact of fracture surfaces. Test results were multiple regression analyzed and got regressed shaping correction factors, (n)$_{REG}$, as function of %O.L., a/W and (.DELTA. $K_{b}$) Wheeler model is modified by using these (n)$_{REG}$. The number of delay cycles calculated by modified Wheeler model were in good agreement with the test results of this study.y.udy.y.y.y.

  • Since 2007, the government has been actively working to enhance the quality of public buildings, as evidenced by initiatives like the "National Basic Architecture Plan" and, since 2014, the "Building Service Industry Promotion Act." Despite these efforts, educational facilities continue to experience more frequent defects compared to large-scale apartment constructions. This study aims to analyze the primary causes of crack formation in educational facilities, employing the 2×2 MATRIX and IPA techniques to develop efficient crack prediction models. The research includes a review of relevant literature and an analysis of data from the Office of Education spanning 2019 to 2021 to pinpoint significant defects. Subsequently, 15 factors related to crack defects were identified through surveys and expert consultations. The 2×2 Matrix analysis of these factors highlighted the challenges in work processes and the effectiveness of preventative measures for crack formation, focusing on key areas for improvement. The findings from this study are anticipated to significantly contribute to the prevention and management of structural cracks in educational facilities, ensuring their long-term integrity.
