  • This paper is to investigate the fracture behavior characteristics of box culvert and incremental crack width of upper slab for the incremental loading by the 3-axis loading system. In the 3-axes loading system, loading directions are upper side, left and right side which simulate earth pressure and static traffic load. With the incremental load, crack patterns is investigated on the upper slab, left and right wall. Especially, on the upper slab, crack width is measured by crack gage. Based on the experimental results, structural internal force indices of box culvert are estimated quantitatively.

  • In this study, to examine the causes of cracks in continuously reinforced concrete tracks (CRCTs) and the main factors affecting cracking, a field survey on the status of cracks and crack patterns in the Gyeong-bu high speed line was conducted, and the crack patterns of CRCT due to the temperature difference between the top of the slab (TCL) and the bottom of the subbase (HSB) and the drying shrinkage of concrete were predicted by a nonlinear finite element model considering the structure of CRCT. The results of the numerical analysis show that cracks will be developed at the interface between the sleeper and the TCL, and under the sleeper due to the temperature difference and concrete shrinkage. This corresponds well to the crack locations found in the field. Also, it is found that the most significant factors are the coefficient of thermal expansion with respect to the temperature difference, and the drying shrinkage strain with respect to shrinkage. According to the results, the reinforcement ratio should be carefully determined considering the structures of CRCT because the crack spacing is not always proportional to the reinforcement ratio due to the sleepers embedded in the TCL.

  • In this paper, we propose a vector-based augmentation technique that can generate data required for crack detection and a ConvNet(Convolutional Neural Network) technique that can learn it. Detecting cracks quickly and accurately is an important technology to prevent building collapse and fall accidents in advance. In order to solve this problem with artificial intelligence, it is essential to obtain a large amount of data, but it is difficult to obtain a large amount of crack data because the situation for obtaining an actual crack image is mostly dangerous. This problem of database construction can be alleviated with elastic distortion, which increases the amount of data by applying deformation to a specific artificial part. In this paper, the improved crack pattern results are modeled using ConvNet. Rather than elastic distortion, our method can obtain results similar to the actual crack pattern. By designing the crack data augmentation based on a vector, rather than the pixel unit used in general data augmentation, excellent results can be obtained in terms of the amount of crack change. As a result, in this paper, even though a small number of crack data were used as input, a crack database can be efficiently constructed by generating various crack directions and patterns.

  • Concrete structures are often subjected to long-term static and short-term dynamic loads. Due to a relatively low tensile strength and energy dissipating characteristics, the impact resistance of concrete is considered poor. This study investigates the feasibility of using polypropylene fibers to improve the impact resistance of reinforced concrete slabs. Fourteen polypropylene fiber reinforced concrete slabs were fabricated and tested using a drop weight test. The effects of slab thickness, fiber volume fractions, and impact energy on the dynamic behaviors were evaluated mainly in terms of impact resistant, crack patterns, and failure modes. The post impact induced strains versus time responses were obtained for all slabs. The results showed that adding the polypropylene fiber at a dosage of 0.90% by volume of concrete leads to significant improvement in the overall structural behavior of the slabs and their resistance to impact loading. Interestingly, the enhancement in the behavior of the slabs using a higher fiber dosage of 1.2% was not as good as achieved with 0.90%.

  • The application of health monitoring, including a fault detection technique, is needed to secure the structural safety of large structures. A 2-step crack identification method for detecting the crack location and size of the beam structure is presented. First, a crack occurrence region was estimated using the modified Laplacian operator for the strain mode shape obtained from the distributed local strain data. The crack location and size were then identified based on the natural frequencies obtained from the acceleration data and the neural network technique for the pre-estimated crack occurrence region. The natural frequencies of a cracked beam were calculated based on an equivalent bending stiffness induced by the energy method, and used to generate the training patterns of the neural network. An experimental study was carried out on an aluminum cantilever beam to verify the present method for crack identification. Cracks were produced on the beam, and free vibration tests were performed. A crack occurrence region was estimated using the modified Laplacian operator for the strain mode shape, and the crack location and size were assessed using the natural frequencies and neural network technique. The identified crack occurrence region agrees well with the exact one, and the accuracy of the estimation results for the crack location and size could be enhanced considerably for 3 damage cases. The presented method could be applied effectively to the structural health monitoring of large structures.

  • It was found in a series of test sections constructed in Houston, Texas that (1) concrete placement in hot season resulted in much more early-age cracks than that in cool season, and that, (2) for the hot season placement, pavements placed in the morning showed more early-age cracks than those placed in the afternoon. Early-age cracks, in this study, are defined as cracks occurring within a few days after construction. Since the early-age cracks have a tendency to be meandering and the crack widths are relatively wide, they may give an adverse effect on the long-term performance of the pavement. The objectives of this study are to recognize the effects of placement time on the early-age crack patterns and to find the reason of the effects. The effects are explained in this study by relating hydration of cement and surrounding temperature conditions.

  • Concrete guide rail and median barrier are an attached RC member, however they are vulnerable to cracking due to slip form construction and large surface of member. In this study, causes and pattern of cracking are analyzed through assessment and NDT (Non-Destructive Technique) evaluation for concrete guide rail and median barrier on highway structure. For this work, analysis on drying shrinkage and hydration heat are performed considering installation period, and plastic shrinkage is also analyzed considering their environmental conditions. From the evaluation, plastic settlement around steel location, drying/ plastic shrinkage, and aggregate segregation are inferred to be the main causes of cracking in the structures. The crack causes and patterns are schematized and techniques of crack-control are suggested. Furthermore concrete guide rail/ median barrier in the bridge on the sea are vulnerable to cracking at early age so that special attentions should be paid at the stages of material selection and construction.

  • When the ceramic material is being machined, micro crack and brittle fracture dominate the process of material removal. Generally, ceramics are very difficult-to-cut materials and machined using conventional method such as grinding and polishing. However, such processes are generally cost-expensive and have low material removal rate. Machinable ceramics used in this study contain BN powder to overcome these problem and for productivity elevation. This paper focuses on machinability evaluation during end mill process with CNC machining center in this study. Experiment for this purpose is performed for tool wear patterns and mechanism.

  • While interacting with a sloping structure, an ice floe may fracture in different patterns. For example, it can be local bending failure or global splitting failure depending on the contact properties, geometry and confinement of the ice floe. Modelling these different fracture patterns as a natural outcome of numerical simulations is rather challenging. This is mainly because the effects of crack propagation, crack branching, multi fracturing modes and eventual fragmentation within a solid material are still questions to be answered by the on-going research in the Computational Mechanic community. In order to simulate the fracturing of ice floes with arbitrary geometries and confinement; and also to simulate the fracturing events at such a large scale yet with sufficient efficiency, we propose a semi-analytical/empirical and semi-numerical approach; but with focus on the global splitting failure mode in this paper. The simulation method is validated against data we collected during the Oden Arctic Technology Research Cruise 2015 (OATRC2015). The data include: 1) camera images based on which we specify the exact geometry of ice floes before and after an impact and fracturing event; 2) IMU data based on which the global dynamic force encountered by the icebreaker is extracted for the impact event. It was found that this method presents reasonably accurate results and realistic fracturing patterns upon given ice floes.

  • This study represents the Nondestructive Test about impact damage of composite materials made by different lay-up patterns and degrees. For this study, they were examined by the drop test on composite materials of two type lap-up patterns with fabric and unidirectional prepreg and examined nondestructive test of those. Nondestructive methods were X-ray test with $ZnI_2$ penetrant and Ultrasonic C-scan. The defect detectability of X-ray and Ultrasonic test was compared according to defect species. And the amounts of damage on impacted zone wert compared according to impact energy on two type test specimens. At results, Ultrasonic test was more effective to detect delamination and Penetrant X-ray test was more effective to detect matrix crack and fiber fracture. There were some differences in defect shapes and grades according to lay-up patterns and degrees, and the trend appeared that matrix crack, delamination, fiber fracture occured and increasing defects sizes according to increasing impact energy.
