  • The sensitivity study to evaluate the effects of parameters on the fatigue crack propagation life under the constant loadings is executed in the previous study of the authors. It is shown that the effect of the crack opening ratio is large comparatively. The purpose of this paper is to evaluate the effects of parameters on the fatigue crack propagation life under the random loadings. A new method of evaluation of the effective stress under the random loadings is developed. The sensitivity study of parameters on the fatigue crack propagation life under the random loadings is executed by using it.

  • We got the following characteristics from fatigue crack growth test carried out in the environment of room temperature and low temperature at $25^{circ}C$, $-60^{circ}C$, $-80^{circ}C$, and $-100^{circ}C$ in the range of stress ratio of 0.3 by means of opening mode displacement. And there is a difference between shot peened specimen and unpeened specimen. The purpose of this study is to predict the behavior of fatigue crack propagation as one of fracture mechanics on the compressive residual stress. Fatigue crack growth rate of shot peened metal was lower than that of unpeened metal. The compressive residual stress made an impact on tension and compression of the plasticity deformation in fatigue crack plasticity zone. That is. the constrained force about plasticity deformation was strengthened by resultant stress, which resulted from plasticity deformation and compressive residual stress in the process of fatigue crack propagation.

  • In this study, CT specimens were prepared from spring steel(SUP9) processed shot peening which was room temperature and low temperature experiment. And we got the following characteristics from fatigue crack growth test carried out in the environment of room temperature and low temperature at $25^{\circ}C$, $-30^{\circ}C$, $-50^{\circ}C$, $-70^{\circ}C$,$-100^{\circ}C$, and $-150^{\circ}C$, in the range of stress ratio of 0.05 by means of opening mode displacement. The threshold stress intensity factor range ΔKth in the early stage of fatigue crack growth (Region I)was increased but stress intensity factor range ΔK in the stable of fatigue crack growth (Region II) was decreased in proportion to decrease temperature. It is assumed that the fatigue resistance characteristics and fracture strength at low temperature and high temperature is considerably higher than that of room temperature in the early stage and stable of fatigue crack growth region.

  • The effect of different anisotropy and stress ratio on fatigue crack propagation behavior was investigated under various stress ratio(R=-0.4, -0.2, 0.2, 0.2, 0.4) using pure titanium sheet used in aerospace, chemical and food industry. The rack closure behavior under constant load amplitude fatigue crack propagation test was examined. Fatigue crack propagation rate da/dN was estimated in terms of effective stress intensity factor range, $\Delta$K$_{eff}$, regardless of various stress ratio but was influenced by anisotropy. Also, it was found that the effect of anisotropy was considerably decreased but still not negligible when he da/dN was evaluated by a conventional parameter, $\Delta$$K_{eff}$/E and when the modified da/dN.$\sqrt{\varepsilon}_f$ was evaluated by $\Delta$$K_{eff}$/E. On the other hand, da/dN could be evaluated uniquely by effective new parameter, $\Delta$K$_{eff}$/$sigma_{ys}$, regardless of anisotropy, as int he following equation da/dN=C''[\frac{{\Delta}K_{eff}}{{\sigma}_{ys}}]^{n''}. And effective stress intensity factor range ratio, U was estimated by the following equation with respect to the ratio of reversed plastic zone size, $\Delta r_{p}$ to monotonic plastic zone size, $r_p$ regardless of stress ratio and anisotropy. It assumed that the fatigue crack growth rate $d{\alpha}/dN$ is rapid in proportion to descend temperature in Region II and the cryogenic-brittleness greatly affect a material with decreasing temperature.

  • Scanning Probe Microscope (SPM) such as Scanning Tunneling Microscope (STM) and Atomic Force Microscope (AFM) was shown to be the powerful tool for nano-scale characterization of a fracture surface . AFM was used to study cross sectional profiles and dimensions of fatigue striations in 2017-T351 aluminum alloy. Their widths (SW) and heights (SH) were measured from the cross sectional profiles of three-dimension AFM images. The following results that will be helpful to understand the fatigue crack growth mechanism were obtained. (1) Coincidence of the crack growth rate with the striation width was found down to the growth rate of 10-5 mm/cycle. (2) The relation of SH=0.085(SW)1.2 was obtained. (3) The ratio of the striation height to its width SH/SW did not depend on the stress intensity factor range K and the stress ratio R. (4) Not only the SW but also the SH changed linearly with the crack tip opening displacement (CTOD) when plotted in log-log scale. From these results, the applicability of the AFM to nano-fractography is discussed.

  • This thesis studied to evaluate the fatigue behavior and propagation of rail steel under welding line. Test of crack growth was performed by all member of rail under constant amplitude loading at the structures laboratory in Hongik University. The effect of the following parameters with initiated crack length on the bottom edge of rail were studied. Here, fracture mechanics mode is opening mode. and Testing Material is KS50N Rail. From analysis and experimented result on the three Point bending in the lab, This paper presented a effect of crack growth , shape and remaining service life. Further more, according to the variable crack length, variable section and the ratio of section the fatigue behavior and propagation were studied.

  • 6063-T5 alloys are tested in laboratory air, water and 3% NaCl solution to investigate the effects of corrosive environment on the retardation behavior through single overload fatigue test. Also, the fatigue crack propagation and the crack closure behavior are studied. The results obtained in this experimental study are summarized as follows: 1) Behaviors of fatigue crack growth retardation are observed in water and 3% NaCl solution as they do in air. The number of delay cycles and the size of affected region by single overload decrease greatly in water and 3% NaCl compared with those in air. 2) In fractographic results, the overload marking by single overload appear remarkably in air, but indistinctly in water and 3% NaCl solution. 3) The effect of crack closure on crack propagation is most remarkable in the beginning of crack propagation. With crack propagation, the crack closure level and its effect decrease greatly.
