  • The magnetostatic interaction between the two magnetic nanowires was studied by using the longitudinal magneto-optical Kerr effect (MOKE). For this purpose two magnetic nanowires having different widths (400 nm, 800 nm) were fabricated on an Si substrate with electron beam lithography and the lift-off method. Magnetic hysteresis loops measured by MOKE showed double switching behavior, corresponding to the separated switching fields of each wire. The switching field of the narrow wire was greatly affected by the separation between the two wires. Based on how the switching field changes with decreasing separation, it is concluded that the magnetostatic field of the 800-nm wire strongly affects the switching of the 400-nm wire when the separation is less than $0.5{\mu}m$.

  • A smart blade conception has been proposed by the authors. With stretching-twisting coupling effect, the blade is twisted by centrifugal load or ambient temperature change. In this paper, the blades, made by three kinds of anti-symmetric laminates, are investigated by rotational tests. The results show the angle of smart blade tips increases in proportion to the 2nd power of a rotating speed and is well in agreement with the numerical results by FEM.

  • The linear constitutive relations and the failure criteria of composite materials made of thermoviscoelastic solids are presented. The post-failure material behavior is proposed and the dynamic finite element equations are formulated. However, a nonlinear term is kept in the energy equation because it represents the effect of the second law of thermodynamics. A general purpose nonlinear three-dimensional dynamic finite element program COMPASS is upgraded and employed in this work to investigate the interdependence among stress wave propagation, stress concentration, failure progression and temperature elevation in composite materials. The consequence of truthfully incorporating the second law of thermodynamics is clearly observed: it will always cause temperature rise if there exists a dynamic mechanical process.

  • For the mold die sticking mechanism, the major explanation is that the silica as a filler in EMC (epoxy molding compound) wears die surface to be roughened, which results in increase of adhesion strength. As the sticking behavior, however, showed strong dependency on the EMC models based on the experimental results from different semiconductor manufacturers, chemisorption or acid-base interaction is apt to be also functioning as major mechanisms. In this investigation, the plasma source ion implantation (PSII) using $O_2, N_2$, and $CF_4$ modifies sample surface to form a new dense layer and improve surface hardness, and change metal surface condition from hydrophilic to hydrophobic or vice versa. Through surface energy quantification by measuring contact angle and surface ion coupling state analysis by Auger, major governing mechanism for sticking issue was figured out to be a complex of mechanical and chemical factors.

  • This paper presents the torque calculation and parametric analysis of synchronous permanent magnet couplings (SPMCs). Based on a magnetic vector potential, we obtained the analytical magnetic field solutions produced by permanent magnets (PMs). Then, the analytical solutions for a magnetic torque were obtained. All analytical results were extensively validated with the non-linear a two-dimensional (2D) finite element analysis (FEA). In particular, test results such as torque measurements are presented that confirm the analysis. Finally, using the derived analytical magnetic torque solutions, we carried out a parametric analysis to determine the influence of the design parameters on the SPMC's behavior.

  • The effects of internal fluid motion have to be considered in the analysis of liquid storage containers. Therefore this thesis developed a three-dimensional boundary element-finite element method for the analysis of rectangular liquid storage containers. The irrotational motion of inviscid and incompressible ideal fluid is modeled by using boundary elements and the motion of structure by finite elements. Coupling is performed by using compatibility and equilibrium conditions along the interface. Dynamic response characteristics of rectangular liquid storage containers such as sloshing motion, hydrodynamic pressure, displacement by fluid-structure interaction are investigated.

  • The analysis of structures may be classified into three categories: theoretical, numerical, and experimental approaches. The numerical and experimental methods are very useful when the structures to be analyzed have complicated shapes or geometry because theoretical methods are restricted to simple and special cases. However, the theoretical methods are very important analysis in the viewpoint that they can give basic insight for the structural behavior. Among them the modal model method is widely used because of the powerful propertiy of eigenfunctions(mode shapes), or orthogonality. In this paper, the modal model method was reviewed and studied for various models for structures: string, beam, membrane, and plate. Governing equations and solution methods were compared and a structural-acoustic coupling system was used for an application.

  • This study was carried out to examine the effect of the presence of non-structural walls in apartment buildings subjected to an earthquake. It was believed that the presence of non-structural walls, which has not been considered in the structural design process, was usually built together with structural walls and this led to significant damages to the apartment buildings in Pohang earthquake, 2017. In this study, a 22-story apartment building was selected and modeled to simulate the seismic behavior due to earthquakes. The story drift, performance point, and compressive strain in the walls were the main parameters to evaluate the seismic performance with the presence of non-structural walls.

  • This work investigates the accuracy and performance of a $FE^2$ multi-scale implementation used to predict the behavior of composite materials. The equations are formulated assuming the small deformations solid mechanics approach in non-linear material models with hardening plasticity. The uniform strain boundary conditions are applied for the macro-to-micro transitions. A parallel algorithm was implemented in order to solve large engineering problems. The scheme proposed takes advantage of the domain decomposition method at the macro-scale and the coupling between each subdomain with a micro-scale model. The precision of the method is validated with a composite material problem and scalability tests are performed for showing the efficiency.
