The lateral vibrating motion of a railway vehicle over a certain critical speed is a well known problem in the field of train dynamics. It is known that the train equations of motion are strongly coupled and highly nonlinear with the motion and causing that it is very difficult to solve the equations simultaneously. In this paper, a 8 degree of feedom model of a railway vehicle was suggested to solve the rail vehicle lateral motion. In stead of solving the nonlinear equation simultaneously, statistical linearization technique was adopted to solve those equations. The analysis results from the statistical linearization method were directly compared with those from direct nonlinear equations and found that the linearization technique can be very effective and economical for railroad vehicle analysis. By the way, it was found that the analysis results can analytically explain the intermittent hunting phenomena which has been frequently observed in experiments.

In unmanned machining, One of the most essential issue is the tool management system which includes controlling. identification, presetting and monitoring of cutting tools. Especially the monitoring of tool wear and fracture may be the heart of the system. In this study a computer vision based tool monitoring system is developed. Also an algorithm which can determine the tool condition using this system is presented. In order to enhance practical adaptability the vision system through which two modes of images are taken is located over the rake face of a tool insert. And they are analysed quantitatively and qualitatively with image processing technique. In fact the morphologies of tool fracture or wear are occurred so variously that it is difficult to predict them. For the purpose of this problem the pattern recognition is introduced to classify the modes of the tool such as fracture, crater, chipping and flank wear. The experimental results performed in the CNC turning machine have proved the effectiveness of the proposed system.
Present study deals with a three phase flow problem of determining drag acting on spheres wetted by liquid flow by gas flow through the spheres in simple cubic (SC), body-center cubic (BCC) and face-centered cubic (FCC) array, respectively, when the inertia of gas is negligibly small. The liquid flow driven by gravity on the spheres is assumed to be unaffected by the countercurrent gas flow. A perturbation method coupled with a multipole expansion method is used to calculate the hydrodynamic interactions between spheres and hence determine the effect of liquid film and flow on the gas flow for each periodic array of spheres. An approximate method for evaluating the effect of the liquid film is also presented for simple estimations. It is found that the approximation results are in a reasonable agreement with the numerical calculations.

A mixed type finite element method is applied to the nonuniform shear warping beam theory which is very useful for the structural analysis of thin-walled sectional beams considering the shear deformation. As known generally, it is shown that the mixed type finite element method, compared with the displacement type one, can give more balanced accuracy of results in calculating the stresses and displacements of the structure. In this paper, one typical example, the flexural-torsional problem of a discontinuously variable sectional beam under coupled end torsional moments, is selected and analyzed to validate the usefulness of the developed beam element.

Due to the recent quantum leaps forward in bio-, nano-, and information-technologies, the precisionization and miniaturization of mechanical and electrical components are in high demand. The allowable margin for vibration limits for such equipments is becoming stricter. In order to meet this demand, understandings on the characteristics of vibration isolation systems are highly required. Among the components comprising the vibration isolation system, air spring has become a focal point. In order to develop a complex defect tester for COG bonding of display panels, a vibration isolation system composed of air springs for mounting is considered in this study. The dynamic characteristics of the air spring are investigated, which is the most essential ingredient for reducing the vibration problem of the tester to the lowest level. Uncoupled dynamic parameters of the air spring are identified through MTS experiments, followed by suggestion of a model-based approach to obtain the remaining coupled dynamic parameters. Finally, the dynamic behaviors of the air spring are estimated and discussed.

The vibration and stability of thin, flexible corotating disks in an enclosed compressible fluid is investigated analytically and compared with the results of a single rotating disk. The discretized dynamical system of the corotating disks is derived in the compact form of a classical gyroscopic system similar with a single disk. For the undamped system, coupled structure-acoustic traveling waves destabilize through mode coalescence leading to flutter instability. However, it is found that the flutter regions of the corotating disks are wider than those of a single disk. A detailed investigation of the effects of dissipation arising from acoustic or disk damping is also performed. Finally, in the presence of both acoustic and disk dampings, the instability regions are found and compared with those of a single disk. Although this study does not allow a radial clearance between the disk and the enclosure, the computational frame work of the problem can be expanded to the system having the radial clearance in an enclosure.

Scattering fields of two dimensional acoustic waves by a circular cylinder are investigated. The present numerical approach for the acoustic scattering problem has difficulties of numerical robustness, long-time stability and suitability of far-field boundary treatments. The time-dependent periodic acoustic source is used to analyze Interference patterns between incident waves and waves reflected by the cylinder. Characteristic boundary algorithms coupled with 4th order Modified-Flux-Approach ENO(essentially non-oscillatory) schemes are employed in generalized coordinates to examine the effect of the wane frequency on the interference patterns. Non-reflecting boundary conditions, which is crustal for accurate computations of aeroacoustic problems, are used not to contaminate scattering fields by reflected waves at the outer boundary. Computed scattering fields show the circumferential acoustic modes generated by interacting between acoustic sources and scattered waves. At a lower frequency, the wave passes almost straight through the cylinder without Interacting with circular cylinder. Simulation results are presented and compared with the analytic solution. Computed RMS-pressure distribution on the cylinder wall is good agreement with exact solution.
In previous study, it was reported that the anomalous skin effect should be considered in the low pressure condition(<10 mTorr). However there is the problem that the filament type antenna model of which size is 0 makes the non-physical phenomena that the electric field at the antenna point is infinite. Therefore, in this work, using the surface current model the electric field in antenna region is calculated and compared with the case of filament type antenna model in various conditions.

A steady transonic dilute premixed combustion in a diverging channel is investigated by using asymptotic analysis. This model explores the nonlinear interactions between the near-sonic speed of the flow, the small changes in geometry from a straight channel, and the small heat release due to the one-step first-order Arrhenius chemical reaction. The reactive flow is described by a nonhomogeneous transonic small-disturbance (TSD) equation coupled with an ordinary differential equation for the calculation of the reactant mass fraction in the combustible gas. Also the asymptotic analysis reveals the similarity parameters that govern the reacting flow problem. The results show the complicated nonlinear interaction between the convection, reaction, and geometry effects and its effect on the flow behavior.
This thesis explores the problem of reconstructing a three-dimensional(3D) scene given a set of images or image sequences of the scene. It describes efficient methods for the 3D reconstruction of static and dynamic scenes from stereo images, stereo image sequences, and images captured from multiple viewpoints. Novel methods for image-based and volumetric modelling approaches to 3D reconstruction are presented, with an emphasis on the development of efficient algorithm which produce high quality and accurate reconstructions. For image-based 3D reconstruction a novel energy minimisation scheme, Iterated Dynamic Programming, is presented for the efficient computation of strong local minima of discontinuity preserving energyy functions. Coupled with a novel morphological decomposition method and subregioning schemes for the efficient computation of a narrowband matching cost volume. the minimisation framework is applied to solve problems in stereo matching, stereo-temporal reconstruction, motion estimation, 2D image registration and 3D image registration. This thesis establishes Iterated Dynamic Programming as an efficient and effective energy minimisation scheme suitable for computer vision problems which involve finding correspondences across images. For 3D reconstruction from multiple view images with arbitrary camera placement, a novel volumetric modelling technique, Embedded Voxel Colouring, is presented that efficiently embeds all reconstructions of a 3D scene into a single output in a single scan of the volumetric space under exact visibility. An adaptive thresholding framework is also introduced for the computation of the optimal set of thresholds to obtain high quality 3D reconstructions. This thesis establishes the Embedded Voxel Colouring framework as a fast, efficient and effective method for 3D reconstruction from multiple view images.
