The cross-section warping due to the passage of high-speed trains can be a relevant issue to consider in the dynamic analysis of bridges due to (i) the usual layout of railway systems, resulting in eccentric moving loads; and (ii) the use of cross-sections prone to warping deformations. A thin-walled beam formulation for the dynamic analysis of bridges including the cross section warping is presented in this paper. Towards a numerical implementation of the beam formulation, a finite element with seven degrees of freedom is proposed. In order to easily consider the compatibility between elements, and since the coupling between flexural and torsional effects occurs in non-symmetric cross-sections due to dynamic effects, a single axis is considered for the element. The coupled flexural-torsional free vibration of thin-walled beams is analysed through the presented beam model, comparing the results with analytical solutions presented in the literature. The dynamic analysis due to an eccentric moving load, which results in a coupled flexural-torsional vibration, is considered in the literature by analytical solutions, being therefore of a limited applicability in practice engineering. In this paper, the dynamic response due to an eccentric moving load is obtained from the proposed finite element beam model that includes warping by a modal analysis.
This paper introduces a new efficient analytical method, based on shear deformations obtained with 2D elasticity theory approach, to perform an explicit closed-form solution for calculation the interfacial shear and normal stresses in plated RC beam. The materials of plate, necessary for the reinforcement of the beam, are in general made with fiber reinforced polymers (Carbon or Glass) or steel. The experimental tests showed that at the ends of the plate, high shear and normal stresses are developed, consequently a debonding phenomenon at this position produce a sudden failure of the soffit plate. The interfacial stresses play a significant role in understanding this premature debonding failure of such repaired structures. In order to efficiently model the calculation of the interfacial stresses we have integrated the effect of shear deformations using the equilibrium equations of the elasticity. The approach of this method includes stress-strain and strain-displacement relationships for the adhesive and adherends. The use of the stresses continuity conditions at interfaces between the adhesive and adherents, results pair of second-order and fourth-order coupled ordinary differential equations. The analytical solution for this coupled differential equations give new explicit closed-form solution including shear deformations effects. This new solution is indented for applications of all plated beam. Finally, numerical results obtained with this method are in agreement of the existing solutions and the experimental results.

This paper is concerned with the application of perturbation method to the dynamic analysis of free-free beam. In general, the rigid-body motions and elastic vibrations are analyzed separately. However, the rigid-body motions cause vibrations and elastic vibrations also affect rigid-body motions in turn, which indicates that the rigid-body motions and elastic vibrations are coupled in nature. The resulting equations of motion are hybrid and nonlinear. We can discretize the equations of motion by means of admissible functions but still we have to cope with nonlinear equations. In this paper, we propose the use of perturbation method to the coupled equations of motion. The resulting equations consist of zero-order equations of motion which depict the rigid-body motions and first-order equations of motion which depict the perturbed rigid-body motions and elastic vibrations. Numerical results show the efficacy of the proposed method.

In this paper, the axial-bending coupled equations of motion for an elastic layered beam are derived. From this equation of motion, the spectral element is formulated for the vibration analysis by use of the spectral element method (SEM). The modal analysis methodology for the present coupled field equations of motion is then developed. As an illustrative example, a cantilevered beam is considered. The correctness of the equations of motion developed herein is verified by gradually reducing the thickness of upper elastic layer to converge to the single layered elastic beam solutions. Also, the accuracy of spectral element is confirmed by comparing its results with the result by modal analysis.
Modal analysis method (MAM) is introduced for the fully coupled structural dynamic problems. In this paper, the beam with active constrained layered damping (ACLD) treatment is considered as a representative problem. The ACLD beam consists of a viscoelastic layer that is sandwiched between the base beam structure and an active piezoelectric layer. The exact damped natural modes are spectrally formulated from a set of fully coupled dynamic equations of motion. The orthogonality property of the exact damped natural modes is then derived in a closed form to complete the modal analysis method. The accuracy of the present MAM is evaluated through some illustrative examples: the dynamic characteristics obtained by the present MAM are compared with the results by spectral element method (SEM) and finite element method (FEM). It is numerically proved that MAM solutions become identical to the accurate SEM solutions as the number of exact natural used in MAM is increased.
This paper is intended to investigate interaction response of a train running over a suspension bridge undergoing support settlements. The suspension bridge is modeled as a single-span suspended beam with hinged ends and the train as successive moving oscillators with identical properties. To conduct this dynamic problem with non-homogeneous boundary conditions, this study first divides the total response of the suspended beam into two parts: the static and dynamic responses. Then, the coupled equations of motion for the suspended beam carrying multiple moving oscillators are transformed into a set of nonlinearly coupled generalized equations by Galerkin's method, and solved using the Newmark method with an incremental-iterative procedure including the three phases: predictor, corrector, and equilibrium-checking. Numerical investigations demonstrate that the present iterative technique is available in dealing with the dynamic interaction problem of vehicle/bridge coupling system and that the differential movements of bridge supports will significantly affect the dynamic response of the running vehicles but insignificant influence on the bridge response.
In this study, an effective method to estimate the fundamental frequencies of co-axial cylinders immersed in fluid is proposed. The proposed method makes use of the equivalent mass or density that is derived from the added mass matrix caused by the fluid-structure interaction (FSI) phenomenon. The equivalent mass is defined from the added mass matrix based on a 2-D potential flow theory. The theory on two co-axial cylinders extended to the case of three cylinders. To prove the validity of the proposed method, the eigenvalue analyses upon coaxial cylinders coupled with fluid gaps are peformed using the equivalent mass. The analyses results upon various fluid gap is conditions reveal that the present method could provide accurate frequencies and be suitable for expecting the fundamental frequencies of fluid coupled cylinders in beam mode vibration.

Coupling beams serve as primary source of energy dissipation in coupled shear wall systems during large earthquakes. However, the overestimation of the shear strength of diagonally reinforced coupling beams may be adverse effect on the seismic performance of coupled shear wall systems. In order to force coupling beams to properly work during earthquakes, coupling beams should be designed with accurate shear strength equations. The objective of this study is to propose the accurate shear strength equation for slender diagonally reinforced coupling beams. For this purpose, experimental tests were conducted using three diagonally reinforced coupling specimens with different amount of transverse reinforcement under reversed cyclic loads to evaluate the hysteretic behavior of the specimens. The test results show that transverse reinforcement of slender diagonally reinforced coupling beam affects the maximum strength and drift ratio.
The authors have studied vibration analysis algorithm which was suitable to the personal computer. Recently, we presented the transfer stiffness coefficient method(TSCM). This method is based on the concept of the transfer of the nodal dynamic stiffness coefficients which are related to force and displacement vectors at each node. In this paper, we describes the general formulation for the longitudinal and flexural coupled vibration analysis of a beam type structure by the TSCM. And the superiority of the TSCM to the finite element method(FEM) in the computation accuracy, cost and convenience was confirmed by results of the numerical computation and experiment.

A CTBA(Coupled Torsion Beam Axle) is a general type for rear suspension of small/compact sedans. It connects left and right knuckles using torsion beam axle and trails rear wheels. Therefore, a CTBA performs a main role of ride & handing. But, a CTBA suspension has main bending mode around 120Hz and causes road booming noise in the interior of a car. Therefore, the mode control of a CTBA is very important for reducing road noise. In this paper, we optimized the shape of a CTBA to reduce road noise considering R&H performance, simultaneously. The vibration mechanism of CTBA was investigated using ODS(Operational Deflection Shape) and mode shape.
