  • Eclipta prostrata is an annual herb, belonging to Asteraceae family, and has been traditionally used to improve immunity and treat hepatitis and bacterial disease in Korea. In this study, a new coumestan glucoside (1) along with ten known compounds (2 - 11) was isolated from E. prostrata. The chemical structures of isolates were elucidated to be wedelolactone-9-O-β-D-glucopyranoside (1), wedelolactone (2), demethylwedelolactone (3), apigenin (4), apigenin-7-sulfate (5), luteolin (6), luteolin-7-sulfate (7), luteolin-7-O-β-D-glucopyranoside (8), pratensein-7-O-β-D-glucopyranoside (9), 3,4-di-O-caffeoylquinic acid (10) and 3,5-di-O-caffeoylquinic acid (11) based on the spectroscopic evidence.

  • Phytoestrogens produced naturally by either plants or their seeds are three main classes of phytoestrogens: isoflavone, lignan and coumestan. Phytoestrogens can have both agonist and antagonist action of estrogenic activity. It is believed that phytoestrogens with agonist and antagonist action of estrogenic activity may reduce the risk of breast cancer, in addition to may reduce the risk of osteoporesis by therapeutic agent of breast cancer.(omitted)

  • A coumestan derivative, psoralidin (1) was found to be a cytotoxic principle of the seeds of Psoralea corylifolia L (Leguminosae) with the IC_{50}$ values of 0.3 and 0.4 ug/ml against the HT-29 (colon) and MCF-7 (breast) human cancer cell lines, respectively. A coumarin, angelicin (2) was also isolated as a marginally cytotoxic agent along with an inactive compound, psoralene (3) from the plant. The isolates 1-3 were not active against the A54l(lung) and HepG2 (liver hepatoma) cancer cell lines.

  • A new phenolic compound and three known flavonoids isolated from the MeOH extracts of Lespedeza tomentosa. Based on spectral data, the isolated compounds were identified as methyl 4,5-dihydroxy-3-methoxy-2-(3-methylbut-2-en-1-yl)benzoate (1), 1-methoxylespeflorin G11 (2), farrerol (3) and 1-methoxylespeflorin I2 (4). Methyl 4,5-dihydroxy-3-methoxy-2-(3-methylbut-2-en-1-yl)benzoate (1) is newly isolated from plant source.
