  • The purposes of this study were to evaluate the color characteristics and color sensibility of mulberry/cotton blended fabrics dyed with indigo, the natural dye, and analyze effects of them on color preferences. The values of CIE $L^*$, $a^*$, $b^*$ $C^*$, h were calculated for the color characteristics of indigo-dyed fabrics, and their hue, value, and chroma were calculated according to the Munsell color system. Fifty male and female college students evaluated the color sensibility of nine types fabrics dyed with indigo on a seven-point scale. The data were analyzed by descriptive statistics, factor analysis, Kruscal-Wallis test, correlation analysis, and regression analysis. The mulberry/cotton blended fabrics naturally dyed with indigo showed the characteristics of PB color tones, low value, and low chroma. The color sensibilities of fabrics dyed with indigo were classified into four factors: 'classic', 'sporty', 'elegant' and 'natural'. There were significant differences according to the fibers and the repeating times of dyeing in the color sensibility for the fabrics. Cotton fabrics were evaluated to be more classic, sporty, elegant, and natural than the mulberry/cotton blended fabrics, and the deeper the color, the more classic, sporty, and elegant the fabric was evaluated. The students preferred the indigo dyed fabrics which have more classic, sporty, and natural sensibility. There were significant relationships between the color sensibilities and colorimetric properties of the fabrics dyed with indigo. The color preferences of the dyed fabrics with indigo were found to be influenced by the 'classic', 'sporty', 'natural' of color sensibility.

  • The influences, that various mercerization conditions had on the dying property of cotton fiber, were studied. Crystallization degrees accompained by lattice transformation of slack-mercerized cotton by IR spectroscopic analysis and morphology of the slack-merceized cotton by SEM were observed in this research. The above results were as follows; 1. Equilibrium dye adsorption rates of slack-mercerized cotton with C. I. Reactive Blue 19 were gained in the case of 8M NaOH, $10^{\circ}C$, 20 min., about 2 times as large as the rates of untreated cotton and gained about 2.5 times in the case of 8M $NH_3$, $10^{\circ}C$, , 20 min. 2. Equilibrium dye adsorption rates of slack-mercerized cotton with C. I. Reactive Blue 2 were gained in the case of 2M NaOH, $10^{\circ}C$, 20 min., about 1.7 times as large as the rates of untreated cotton and gained about 2.4 times in the case of 8M $NH_3$, $10^{\circ}C$, 20 min. 3. It was confirmed by SEM that untreated cotton fibrils are formed in the shape of screw and treated cotton is rearranged in the direction of fiber axis.

  • Cotton fabrics treated with hybrid materials were developed and prepared. A halogen-free flame retardant and an aromatic amide were blended and applied to cotton fabrics. Thermal and physical properties of the treated cotton fabrics were investigated. The surface of the pure and coated cotton fabrics was characterized by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy. The elemental composition of the coated surface of the cotton fabric was measured using X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and compared with that of pure cotton fabric. After being solved in N,N-dimethylacetamide, m-aramid and triphenylphosphine oxide (TPP) were applied to cotton fabrics through a dip-pad-coagulation process. The treated cotton fabrics with recycled m-aramid/TPP resulted in increased limited oxygen index values and thermal resistance.

  • Dyeing cotton fabric with direct dye (C. I. Direct Blue 15) by redox sytem of ammonium persulfate as an oxidant and glucose as reductant was studied. It was found that covalent bond between dye and cellulose molecule can be formed by free radical produced by the redox system in the dye bath, which enhanced significantly the color strength. The retained color strength after DMF extraction was much better in the presence than in the absence of the redox sytem. The optimum dyeing condition was 0.028 mol/$\ell$(APS/Glucose each) of redox concentration, 65$^{\circle}C$ of dyeing temperature and 60min of dyeing time. The color variation on the dyed sample had not been observed as a result of fixed ${\lambda}_max$.

  • In this study, wool, silk and cotton fabrics were dyed with natural dyes derived from Ginkgo biloba bark using various mordants, and their dyeabilities were discussed. Additionally the fastness to washing, perspiration, light, rubbing, and drycleaning were investigated. And the effects of bacteria reduction and UV-B protection rate were also checked. The optimum dyeing condition of the colorants extracted from the Ginkgo biloba bark was three repeated dyeing at$95^\circ{C}$ for 1 hr. by using post mordanting. Mordanting improved the fastness to washing, Perspiration and drycleaning, but the fastness to light and rubbing were not increased. The bacteria reduction rate of the wool fabric increased drastically by dyeing with extract of Ginkgo biloba bark and its effect maintained after repeated washing and drycleaning. UV-B protection rate of the natural fibers increased by dyeing with extract of Ginkgo biloba bark and the dyed wool fabric was the best of the three fabrics.

  • Dyeing properties using natural material named Sasa quelpaertensis Nakai were investigated under various conditions such as fabric type, pH, concentration, temperature, dyeing time and dipping count. Sasa quelpaertensis Nakai is a unique material in that it is raised only at Halla mountain in Jeju island and is known to have healing effect. Overall, wool fabrics were better than cotton fabrics in all aspects of the dyeing properties showing reddish yellow. For the fastness properties, robbins washing and perspiration fastness were excellent but lightfastness was poor as expected.

  • Following the prior studs regarding that 1.0g of cotton fabric cound be dyed uniformly with a reactive dye in the solvent mixture of 2㎖ of water and 23㎖ of dichloromethane, silk fabric was dyed with C. I. Reactive Blue 203 in the water/dichloromethane two-phase immiscible solvent media. In order to minimize dye loss due to its hydrolysis, the reactive dyeing was carried out in dichloromethane containing a small amount of water. With only 3㎖ of water in 22㎖ of dichloromethane, 1.0g of silk fabric could be dyed perfectly. The uptake ratio was increased greatly, compared with that of normal reactive dyeing in a water medium. It would seem that the one of hydrophobic solvents, dichloromethane, can assist the even dyeing as it disperses a small amount of dye-dissolved water phase and conveys this water phase to the fabric entirely and uniformly.

  • In this paper, the effect of the loess and mud of an inorganic substance dyed on cotton knitting fabrics have been studied The structure and chemical composition of loess and mud was analyzed. And the Far-Infrared emissivity and emission power, colorfastness, anti-bacterial properties cotton knitting fabrics dyed with loess and mud were also evaluated. The structure and chemical composion of loess and mud was almost identical structure and to be alike main components were SiO$_2$, Al$_2$0$_3$ and Fe$_2$O$_3$. The cotton hitting fabrics dyed with loess and mud have good colorfastness and anti-bacterial properties. when the dyed fabrics was after-treated with diphenyl ether, the anti-bacterial property were improved. Far-Infrared emissivity and emission power cotton knitting fabrics dyed with loess and mud have very good.
