The feasibility of using benzotriazole (BTAH) to inhibit pitting corrosion in the sprinkler copper tubes was investigated by filling the tubes with BTAH-water solution in 829 households at an eight-year-old apartment complex. The water leakage rate was reduced by approximately 90% following BTAH treatment during 161 days from the previous year. The leakage of one of the two sprinkler copper tubes was investigated with optical microscopy, scanning electron microscopy, energy dispersive spectroscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, and X-ray diffraction analysis to determine the formation of Cu-BTA film inside the corrosion pits. All the inner components of the corrosion pits were coated with Cu-BTA films suggesting that BTAH molecules penetrated the corrosion products. The Cu-BTA film was about 2 nm in thickness at the bottom of a corrosion pit. A layer of CuCl and $Cu_2O$ phases lies under the Cu-BTA film. This complex structure effectively prevented the propagation of corrosion pits in the sprinkler copper tubes and reduced the water leakage.
In order to investigate the corrosion pit occurrence and growth characteristic of M.E.F.(martensite encapsulated islands of ferrite) dual phase steel was made with a suitable heat treatment of raw material(SS41), a corrosion fatigue test was performed under rotary bending in the salt solution having a concentration from 0.01 wt percent to 3.5 wt percent. The fatigue strength of dual phase steel was remarkably decreased with an increase in concentration of salt solution; approximately from 63% to 80% in case of dual phase steel and from 40% to 71% in case of raw material. Corrosion pit occurred in the martensite phase and fatigue cracks from corrosion pits were selectively propagated in martensite phases. In the observation of corrosion pits at the origin of fatigue cracks, it had been found that corrosion pits were grown into hemispherical pits and a/c(the surface diameter, 2c and the depth, a of corrosion pit)was about 1.0-1.5regardless of the variation of salt solution concentration. The difference of corrosion pit depth growth rate was increased with an increase in concentration of salt solution according to an increase in stress level.

After long-term service in deep ocean, pipelines are usually suffered from corrosions, which may greatly influence the Vortex-Induced Vibration (VIV) behavior of pipes. Thus, we investigate the VIV of defective pipelines. The geometric nonlinearity due to large deformation of pipes and nonlinearity in vortex-induced force are simulated. This nonlinear vibration system is simulated with finite element method and solved by direct integration method with incremental algorithm. Two kinds of defects, corrosion pits and volumetric flaws, and their effects of depth and range on VIV responses are investigated. A new finite element is developed to simulate corrosion pits. Defects are found to aggravate VIV displacement response only if environmental flow rate is less than resonance flow rate. As the defect depth grows, the stress responses increase, however, the increase of the defect range reduces the stress response at corroded part. The volumetric flaws affect VIV response stronger than the corrosion pits.
This work examined pitting corrosion failure of a copper heat-return pipe used in a district heating system. The copper pipe was corroded with a 48% reduction in thickness due to localized corrosion on the inner surface exposed to heating water of 20 ~ 40 ℃. Fe and Si elements as corrosion products were found around pits. Cl element was also observed, which accelerated oxidation of copper inside pits. Cu2O deposits on the pit's bottom surface decreased the pH inside the pit. X-ray diffraction analysis revealed hematite, cuprite, malachite and brochantite as corrosion products. Chemical analysis demonstrated that Fe and Si elements did not exist in the copper, supply water, or heating water, indicating that Fe and Si species might have entered into the pipe from the exterior. These results indicated that pits were initiated due to ion concentration gradient near Fe and Si species. Moreover, the interior of pits had lower pH due to Cl- concentration and Cu2O reactions, which accelerated the pit's growth and led to formation of pinholes. Additionally, we confirmed that the type of pitting corrosion was a complex combination of types I and II based on the HCO3-/SO42- ratio, pH, temperature, and corrosion products.
Crack growth rate and threshold stress intensity factor for stress corrosion cracking(SCC), $K_{ISCC}$ were measured for type 403 stainless steel in 3,5% NaCl solution at room temperature and SCC was monitored by electrochemical noise technique during $K_{ISCC}$ testing. In rising load test, pits were formed at the tip of pre-crack for the pre-cracked compact tension specimen unlike in smooth round specimen in which only unstable pits were observed and hence immune to SCC. Micro-cracks were found to initiate from the pits in the former specimen, and initiation of micro-crack as well as macro-crack was detected by electrochemical noise technique in rising load $K_{ISCC}$ tests. Crack growth rate increased with increasing either displacement rate or stress intensity factor at crack initiation and was higher in rising load $K_{ISCC}$ test compared to constant load $K_{ISCC}$ test at given stress intensities.
The interactions between corrosion pits on stainless steel under loading conditions are studied by using a cellular automata model coupled with finite element method at a mesoscopic scale. The cellular automata model focuses on a metal/film/electrolyte system, including anodic dissolution, passivation, diffusion of hydrogen ions and salt film hydrolysis. The Chopard block algorithm is used to improve the diffusion simulation efficiency. The finite element method is used to calculate the stress concentration on the pit surface during pit growth, and the effect of local stress and strain on anodic current is obtained by using the Gutman model, which is used as the boundary conditions of the cellular automata model. The transient current characteristics of the interactions between corrosion pits under different simulation factors including the breakdown of the passive film at the pit mouth and the diffusion of hydrogen ions are analyzed. The analysis of the pit stability product shows that the simulation results are close to the experimental conclusions.

Microbiologically influenced Corrosion (MIC) is one of the most deleterious effects of metal microbe interactions. When a fresh metal surface comes in contact with a non-sterile fluid, biofilm formation is ensued. This might result in the initiation of corrosion. The sites and materials where MIC is implicated are versatile. Industries such as shipping, power generation, chemical etc are reported to be affected. The rapid and unexpected failure of AISI type 304 stainless steel was investigated in the laboratory by simulation studies for a period of 4 months. Slime and water samples from the failure site were screened for corrosion causing bacteria. Both aerobic and anaerobic nora were enumerated and identified using PCR techniques. Pseudomonas sp. and Bacillus sp. were the most common aerobic bacteria isolated from the water and slime samples, whilst sulfate reducing bacteria (SRB) were the major anaerobic bacteria. The aerobic bacteria were used for the corrosion experiments in the laboratory. Coupon exposure studies were conducted using a very dilute (0.1%V/V) nutrient broth medium. The coupons after retrieval were observed under a Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM) for the presence of MIC pits. Compared to sterile controls, metal coupons exposed to Pseudomonas sp and Bacillus sp. showed the initiation of severe pitting corrosion. However, amongst these two strains, Psudomonas sp. caused pits in a very short span of 14 days. Towards the end of the experiment, severe pitting was observed in both the cases. The detailed observation of pits showed they vary both in number and shapes. Whilst the coupons exposed to Bacillus sp. showed widely spread scales like pits, those exposed to Pseudomonas sp. showed smaller and circular pits, which had grown in number and size by the end of the experiment. From these results it is inferred that the rapid and unexpected failure of 304 SS might be due to MIC. Pseudonwnas sp. could be considered as the major responsible bacteria that could initiate pits in the metallic structures. As the appearance of pits was different in both the tested strains, it was thought that the mechanisms of pit formation are different. Experiments on these lines are being continued.
Marine propeller is one of the most important element of ship, it must be taken care of design and maintenance of it. It is inevitable that corrosion pits have occurred on the marine propeller. If corrosion pits have occurred on the blades, they have been repaired ordinary by simple welding methods in shipyards. It must be that the strength is degraded in this process. In this paper, we represent the improvement method of fatigue strength degraded after repairing pits.
Aluminum was electrochemically etched in acid solution and the surface area was magnified by the formation of etch pits. Etched aluminum was covered with a compact and dense dielectric oxide film by anodization and applied to the aluminum electrolytic capacitor electrode. Capacitance of aluminum electrolytic capacitor is closely related with surface area, which depends on size and number of etch pits. Size of etch pits need to be controlled because inside of the pits can be buried by the formation of dielectric oxide film. In this work, the effect of ultrasound pretreatment on the aluminum etch pit formation and capacitance were investigated. Additionally, the relationship between the second etching effect on pit size and capacitance was studied.
Fatigue tests were carried out by a rotary bending testing machine of cantilever type. M.E.F.(ferrite encapsulated islands of martensite) materials were made by a series of heat treatment from a low carbon steel(SM 20 C). The fatigue tests were conducted at stress levels of 302 MPa and with frequencies of 25Hz, 2.5 Hz and 0.5 Hz in 3% NaCl solution. The fatigue strength increased with frequency got higher. The microcracks and corrosion pits were generated at the boundary between the matrix and the 2nd phase. The cracks generated by the corrosion pits were coalesced with the pits around the notch and became the initial crack. The $N_i/N_f$ ratio increased as the frequency and stress level decreased. The interference phenomenon increased with stress level and frequency gots higher. The crack propagation rate was delayed as the stress level lowers and the frequency gets higher, however, the range of the stress intensity factor depended only on a stress level.
